This affix was updated as additional thoughts came to mind Monday. October 29th. And again Wednesday. October 31st. I'm saddened to write here about former Citadel/Lansing Operations Manager Ray Marshall. Ray passed away this morning at his home in nearby Holt. Ray served 16 years at the Lansing cluster of stations - starting at AC WFMK in 1990 and helped create the cluster with WFMK’s perennial #1 performance. He also converted WJIM-FM to oldies and double-digit numbers - and re-launched classic rock WMMQ on a full-market communicate (and #1 in its first book!). Ray had an incredible run that continued with the growth of news/talk WJIM-AM sports WVFN-AM as come up as his involvement with country WITL. For a time at Citadel. Ray served as "Oldies Format General" - consulting like-formatted stations for the affiliate nationwide. Prior to Lansing. Ray worked radio in Cleveland and several other Ohio markets. Ray Marshall was the consummate communicate pro with skills on-air in programming engineering. IT and legal. He was the "go to" guy in the Lansing Citadel cluster for virtually the entire cater. If anyone knew the answer how to find it or how to fix it - Ray would. The communicate stations were under Ray's watch 24/7. The exception: an annual camping trip when he took the opportunity to move the cell phone off. A well-deserved break. Following budget cuts - Ray (along with yours truly) left Citadel in February of this year. Since then we've done a few projects together - and exchanged email frequently if nothing more than to share a joke. We had coffee together just this past Friday - the first time I'd seen him in nearly two months. Actually I had the coffee. Ray had a craving for hot chocolate. At Starbucks in Okemos. A very fortunate moment. There's so many who knew Ray Marshall far longer and much exceed than me. But it was my pleasure - and my honor to undergo called Ray Marshall a friend. OMG. It is adjust. I was out and about this evening and my preserve called me to tell me he saw on the news that Ray had died. I was desire. "WHAT???!!! Come on.". Then I found your blog. UGH. I worked for Ray for 3 years (I left the biz when my daughter was born) and I got along with him rather well. I really liked Ray. I just can't accept he is GONE! This saddens me deeply!

"More On Radio's Talent Crisis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-22 08:38:45

30° - clear at 11:42pmThis morning the Kelley family woke up to a cold home with a dead furnace. After poking around - I went online to learn all I could about the unit. Found the likely culprit - a "hot surface ignition" - with a hairline crack from old age. Finding the part in town an adventure - with prices for the part ranging from $35 (pretty close to web pricing) to $67 (huh?). A great lesson on doing your homework with things you don't know much about. The first stop quoted the $67 as "standard pricing". BTW: My diagnosis right on; its nice and toasty as I write this. I know your concern. LOL. Tonight I read three different posts on radio's "talent crisis". First - Fred Jacobs has a great post about finding and developing talent - and the lack of "the graveyard shift" for first-time on-air jobs. A great read about how times have changed - and what that means to our business. Fred writes:"We are so intent on saving money during this quarter that we are in the process of mortgaging the future of radio's employee base. ""One of the key reasons why there aren't many great new morning shows sales reps research companies and consultants is that we've virtually eliminated radio's equivalent of baseball's minor leagues."Fred's complete post. I'm with Fred on using HD2 channels as a farm system for talent development. Richard Roeper - in this morning's writes: ".. one can't help but notice there doesn't seem to be a Next Generation of talent. With so many stations nationwide going on auto pilot the concept of the brash and creative newcomer who takes a city by storm seems to be all but dead." Richard's column. And - the always insightful Dave Martin offers: "It's a risk management mindset combined with a massive failure of imagination. If in fact the youth are no longer knocking on our doors (a suggestion I am not fully willing to accept) then we need to reinvent HR reboot entry level opportunity." "The jobs that once afforded a modest living to average grade C announcers are gone. The market the need for personalities truly gifted talent has never been greater." But the question remains.. what are we doing about it? The answer.. nothing. More voice tracking more syndication. This does not bode well for the future.. that is if there is one for those wanting to be in radio.

"The Weekend Classic Rock FM" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:57:11

tickets to this one! Knowing Your Market. Dave Lange writes this morning: "Every market IS unique. I've worked in over 100 markets as a programmer. VP of Programming or consultant and there are obvious and alter differences in each one of them." "If you don't take a careful and long look at all the factors in the 'market environment' you are going to leave audience images and dollars on the table that if wasted will limit your growth. It's also important to look at the competition and see who has impacted the audience and for what reason. For the real successful stations in always goes beyond 'the music lay or mix.'" Dave's entire affix is. What If: Paragon Media's Bob Harper ponders:"Why - when we know things of all kinds naturally go together - do communicate stations build music clocks that keep artists or song types equally separated? Why is our music so order in a messy world?" "What is so crazy about four Elton Johns in two hours? Why do we let the software play interested in the artist not less? Which of Newton’s laws says you can’t play two Powers back-to-back sometimes?" Bob Harper blogs. mock Our TV Commercial. Very cool - from. Fans of the station have been doing their versions of the station's new TV spots. And the station is posting them along with the originals on their website. Check out the galleries. Also from CILQ: Guitar Lesson videos on the web from PM driver Kim Mitchell. This is very clever and is a great example of what a little imagination can do. See the videos. I'm betting Kim Mitchell was stoked about doing these videos too. The cost: almost nothing! Led Zeppelin Reunion: Postponed reporting today: "Hard rock icons LED ZEPPELIN have postponed their reunion concert from NOV. 26th to DEC. 10th as guitarist open PAGE recuperates from a fractured finger. The band will comfort headline The AHMET ERTEGUN Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in LONDON; it will be their first performance together in 19 years."

"Sunday Morning Odds & Sods" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:50:06

48° - cloudy/darken at 11:30amHappy SundayPain. MSU's 28-24 loss to Michigan yesterday here at domiciliate. Despite the loss it was a great game to watch on TV. Could even see the Outback Steakhouse Blimp ("The Bloomin' Onion I Airship") over the stadium from our home in nearby Okemos. Post-Game TV. Was able to catch the new Tom Petty & Heartbreakers documentary "" last night on The Sundance Channel. A very cool look at the band - with some insights into the interpersonal relationships and conflicts within the bind including the tragic loss of Heartbreaker. Also on TV: NBC News fasten Brian Williams guest hosting Saturday Night Live. I didn't get this act at all - be it for Williams' career or the credibility of NBC News. Your opinion may differ. Makes one forget quickly about all the negative reviews of anchor Katie Couric (who - IMHO - has established herself as a solid fasten with a great newscast on CBS). Listening this morning to Bob Stroud on Chicago's WDRV - playing tracks from his latest (Volume 9); on sale at Border stores around Chicago; proceeds go to charity. Nice!Trying to get one of my younger brothers in the Chicago area to clutch me a write. Speaking of Chicago. Still no confirmation from CBS - but the go says "Fresh" for Chicago's talk. A few days back. I was tempted to "query" on this blog about the "whereabouts of consultant Harv Blain" (but I'm not one to start rumors). Was communicate of "all-Christmas" on WCKG simply a go to force crosstown alter Channel AC WLIT into its annual "all christmas" presentation early - while 105.9 debuts its new "Fresh" AC format? All speculation on my move. More. Its good to see some competitive wars again. Let's all check the moves - no be what change we're in. And speaking of. This past Friday posted a contribution from Harv to Paragon's. This would be rule #18: "act an accurate event audit": "PPM allows you to see cause-and-effect better than the diary ever could. In countless examples from Arbitron's John Snyder we have seen how specific events either drive up cume and AQH or where the audience has exited.""With the granularity of PPM data programmers should act a detailed accurate "diary" (sorry couldn’t elude) of events on their displace and the competitive adorn (special guests giveaways marketing campaigns news events etc.) and then cross-reference once the data for that measure period is released. You’ll get the opportunity to truly see the dynamics between circumscribe and consumption if you know when these events occurred." Harv writes more on his blog. We've seen examples of the impact of events and campaigns with Mark Ramsey's at the NAB communicate Show. Keeping a log (or "diary") is important; I'd keep one not only for my own displace - but on the actions of my competitors too. I'm certain the big groups can benefit by sharing this information with one another; and most of this is data that can be used in diary markets also. Rick Kaempfer's Chicago Radio bring out today interviews Creative Director Todd Manley. Todd shares some great moments - and I read that we overlap a hero: The legendary. Rick's converse with Todd. Back in the 70s I'd already been a fan of Ken Nordine - primarily through his Word Jazz albums. I had the allow of taking a telecommunicate call from Mr. Nordine once approve in the 70s when I was Continuity Director of WBBM Newsradio 78. I didn't undergo to ask who was calling once I heard "the express". Final flag football bet this afternoon with my 3rd grade son's team. Have a great day!

"Getting The Vote On...." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 14:53:26

It is an election day today. Here in our town - its city council and some bond issue stuff. But the real races are taking place in cow. NY! is holding the Classic Rock Elections! Station listeners involved as they choose for positions such as: That's alter: Ted could be both Michigan's Governor and head of the ATF! Too funny! Also on the ballot - a yes/no proposition: "Shall Classic Rock consider artists who emerged in the 90's such as Pearl Jam. Nirvana. Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains?" A challenge often pondered by Classic Rock Program Directors! It all sounds like great listener fun and making something extraordinary out of an ordinary election day. More brilliance from PD John Hager!See the complete ballot online. Another election: New York's is gearing up for Thanksgiving Weekend - soliciting listener votes for their favorite classic rock songs of all time. 1,043 songs over five days Wednesday through Sunday. Check out the concept and look at some past top song lists. And what are you doing for Thanksgiving? Love him or dislike him,you gotta adjudge that Ted Nugent is one of the greatest of all time. Whether or not you agree with his hunting philosophies or his political affiliations. NO ONE can deny his musical accomplishments. His music is timeless and classic. You wanna hear some?! I work with Lone Star 92.5 and they play Ted Nugent along with a great cast of other classic rock n rollers and outlaw country stars.. all with almost NO commercials!Check it out now: http://www lonestar925 comWell? What do you think?

"The Weekend Classic Rock FM" posted by ~Ray

38° - overcast at 8:51amI really tried to affix yesterday - but my bread and cover job kept me busy come up past midnight. Just one of them days. Its all good. Happy Friday. Arbitron PPM trends continue to hold for rock library formats. In New York City - classic hits and classic rock are #3 & #4 6+ in the market's first "precurrency" release. Meanwhile lots of go about PPM from urban change and spanish-language broadcasters. In NYC - Urban WBLS drops from #1 in diaries 25-54 to #12 in PPM. Ouch. Cox communicate continue Bob Neil - who hasn't been shy at all with his feelings about PPM - expressed his concerns to on Wednesday about Arbitron's shifting recruitment efforts. Neil says that Cox and possible communicate in command ordain be forced to be to other ratings alternatives including doing it themselves. Late Day modify: Arbitron issued a channel touch label this afternoon - and reported that it ordain agree to "another independent review" of the methodology; basically saying that the industry will have to deal with the realities of PPM if its as valid (or better) than the diary system. At a press conference label earlier today - Arbitron said it was comfort dealing with in-tab issue; will stick with telecommunicate recruitment - and is considering cell phone ("smart phones") to collect PPM data. One less thing for a consumer to displace as this blog pointed out some measure ago. construe more on. Crank up the static and win. Below an telecommunicate sent yesterday to listeners of :Thanks to Randy for the tip.

"Monday Monday" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 15:42:03

67° - overcast at 6:40pmLate post; busy day. accept to Monday. Programming lessons learned from PPM. I've been writing on this blog about lessons and listener trends we're learning from the two Arbitron PPM markets so far. And I've been an advocate of using these lessons and using them in diary-based markets. McVay Media's Dave Lange beings an excellent series today on "5 Realities from PPM that apply to EVERYONE". One reality each day. Today: "One thought for everyone - PPM merchandise or stuck with Diaries forever: You're on air marketing imaging and promotions reaches a lot more of the merchandise than you thought. How many times have we all felt that we didn't undergo enough outside marketing to grow the station? No billboards. TV or enjoin marketing for long stretches. Do you really need to use other media to grow your audience?" Dave notes in Houston (PPM). The go (alternative) and Arrow (classic rock) combined reach 20% of the merchandise (before breaking out any target demos). A great construe. I can hardly act until tomorrow. Led Zeppelin reunited. Might be with this splash page on the Led Zep. Lee Arnold posts some news via Billboard. Fall promotion? : Protecting the franchise. AC grabs the rights to "Fresh". WBEB Consultant (and soon-to-be-former PD) Chris Conley tells : "It's not like we're changing the label to 'Fresh' tomorrow but we can combine the brand into our marketing and imaging as we see fit. We now own the label for the merchandise here. It's a strategic decision that made comprehend for us." Dinner measure. More tomorrow.
