Nearly all of Boston’s talk radio hosts took a hit this summer in the ratings losing listeners from the spring in the most important and money-making demographic according to Arbitron ratings obtained by the Herald.
“It reflects all the turmoil that we’ve been seeing here. Things are a mess,” said Brian Maloney an industry analyst who runs Web site and which also reports on the ratings.
While the spring and fall ratings books are the most critical the summer and winter books are still important. Maloney said.
With Michael Graham in Don Imus’ old morning-drive slot on WTKK (96.9 FM) the share among 25 to 54-year-olds fell 25% to a 2.4 with 9,400 listeners in that age group listening during an average 15 minutes.
(All the following ratings are among 25-to-54 year-olds and listeners in an average 15 minute period).
WTKK afternoon-drive host Jay Severin was down 15% from the spring with a 3.5 share and 13,800 listeners. The mid-morning slot currently hosted by Michele McPhee fell 59% to a 1.3 share and 5,500 listeners. Margery Eagan and Jim Braude dropped 27% with a 2.7 share and 11,800 listeners.
Over at WRKO (680 AM) morning-drive man Tom Finneran dropped again falling 16% from the spring to summer with a 1.6 share and 7,100 listeners. Last summer however with host Scott Allen Miller the share was a 1.4 with 4,900 listeners.
Howie Carr fell 39% to a 2.7 share with 10,400 listeners. Carr has been off the air since last month. Mid-morning host Todd Feinburg who has been filling in for Carr fell 7% with a 1.4 share and 5,800 listeners.

I think it’s just that we’re sick of all right-wing talk all the time. I’m one of the missing Imus listeners and Michael Graham is indistinguishable from all the Limbaugh. O’Reilly clones. At least Imus was a different voice. So now I listen to CD’s on the way in to work. Sorry about that. WTTK advertisers. I hope you like reaching fewer customers.
