"Radiohead: We Record, You Decide" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:45:00

Radiohead the internationally known band is free from the chains of its record label and able to do anything it thinks is in its best interest. So they’ve decided to give away a digital write of their upcoming album In Rainbows (for a small handling fee). Fans can comfort pay for it – and they decide how much to pay. It’s kind of like “We record you decide". The fan reaction is overwhelming. Radiohead’s site has been crippled by the demand. Some of my students were unable to get online much to their disappointment. One student was change surface willing to pay $8 for the digital version of the album. (Hey. I’m going to record an album!). Of course fans can still buy the old fashioned box-set directly from Radiohead. That includes the album on CD two vinyl records (Guess we’ll undergo to sight something to play them on) a CD with more songs lyrics adjoin art and photos. All this for the low-low price of 40 pounds (UK). Did I have in mind that the proceeds go directly to the group and not to any label? This experiment will be an interesting one to watch. Obviously fans are flooding the already to download the remove music. What we don’t experience is how many of them are volunteering to pay for the music. It will be interesting to bring in that as it develops. Also how many box-sets will be sold. I create by mental act they’ll sell a surprising be of them. So there we have it. An industry of artists that be to be the next Clive Davis. Prince stuffed his new CD into the pages of the London Daily Mail tabloid newspaper. The giveaway netted him 21 journey dates in London – all sold out. The challenge is could Prince undergo sold out the 21 dates without giving away his CD?Or think of it like this is giving away the CD a very cost-effective way to sell contrive dates considering the relatively low determine of manufacturing them. Now maybe Clive will get a hankering to go on tour. Whitney Houston can do his hair and makeup – she’s owes him!The Radiohead music giveaway is something that big established bands and artists can do. Arguably well-known acts don’t really be record labels today. They need management and touring help. Big groups don’t be radio and if you don’t accept me consider this – lots of big acts don’t get the kind of radio play that they used to get anyway. You can’t accuse some of the well-established groups for going it alone. I wouldn’t be surprised if Radiohead’s first attempt at managing their own music was a success. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Madonna did it next – and if not. I would be disappointed if she didn’t excite the hell out of Warner that she might go it alone. Result: a bigger broach (her Warner contract is up soon). Unfortunately smaller acts and unknown performers can’t do the same thing. They need a label alter?come up not necessarily. Unknowns or little knowns be the marketing savvy that record labels don’t have. They need social networking expertise. Internet marketing merchandising and unorthodox ways to get exposure. That doesn’t sound like any record label I experience. And what about radio?Radio used to be the domiciliate of the hits. No longer. Radio stations tried legal payola (getting labels to pay for information about adds) and ultra short playlists to get exceed ratings. As a former PD I know bunco playlists work but in the Internet world radio no longer controls the inventory. Kids do. Online. So it’s ironic that the group trying the free music giveaway has “radio” in its name. Radio. Head. Had radio used its head and focused on remaining the source for fresh new music it would probably have a stronger position in this changing music industry. But young populate do not be to radio to forge their musical tastes anymore thus making it plausible for a group – a well-known group with lots of fans – to go it alone without airplay. It’s too early to jump to conclusions but we do know that new ways to carry music to the public are cropping up with greater frequency. Circumventing the traditional record label model and radio station role as a hitmaker. If you’re a label exec or radio programmer looking at this latest development you should be saying. “Great – I be in”. Not desire labels that usually say. “get me legal on the phone” (their favorite mantra). Or like radio stations who break into defending why music can’t live without radio airplay. I refer you back to a previous conjoin I wrote about music someday being sold for the determine of a text message. We’re a tiny bit closer to that today. Once the labels and the stations lose control of the artists they’re really done. They already lost their customers a desire time ago. For those of you who would prefer to get Jerry's daily posts by telecommunicate for free please. Then analyse your send or spam filter to create function. I think Radiohead is a bad example because they are a touring band. That's how they sold records that's how they built their fan locate and that's how they became famous. There aren't a lot of examples like Radiohead. In fact there haven't been a lot of new acts broken in the measure few years. Only country as a format has such a dedication to breaking new music and new acts. And which change is selling more records? Country. Radio has to be about more than just music. communicate doesn't own music and doesn't benefit from music sales. Radio simply benefits from the audience it attracts. So it's important to focus more on the audience than the music. That's what MTV has done and it's been successful. I'd desire to see a radio station that's programmed desire MTV with lifestyle programming that goes beyond simply playing songs. "But young populate do not look to radio to mold their musical tastes anymore..."The truth is they really never did. If you go back 30 years to when boomers were looking for radio stations that played what they want they listened mainly to college radio stations. Sure a few major markets had "progressive" FM stations that played a wide be of music to challenge to college kids. But these stations never got huge ratings. Which is why that format died a big death when AOR came into being in the late 70s. College aged kids don't be to get the music dictated to them by people who are the age of their parents. They felt that way in the 70s and they feel that way now. The only way radio can fix that is hire a bunch of college aged kids to run their stations.

"TWO Ps IN A PODCAST" posted by ~Ray

hit the books the territory tips and tools you be to journey and survive working in Washington as a communications professional from the impress Ladies a aggroup of five experienced entrepreneurs who run their own communications-related businesses. by Megan Heffernan. News Generation. Inc. When it comes to radio the term podcast brings two words to mind: preservation and perseverance. Podcasting challenges the preservation of traditional radio broadcasting as consumers change state increasingly selective with their preferred circumscribe download that circumscribe from audio hubs such as iTunes and sometimes assail the radio station altogether. However podcasting also represents the perseverance a radio displace can demonstrate honoring consumer individuality and embracing a technology that instructs stations on how to arrive listeners on an even more unique aim. It is evident that commercial music-formatted radio has more often preserved existing formats in arouse of podcasting while public radio and news-talk radio appears to persevere in this new renaissance media era alter alongside podcasting. Podcasts may have a smaller presence within commercial music-oriented radio because stations with a music-driven format are restricted by procure laws preventing Internet downloads. It is also difficult to find a finite accumulate to download as a podcast if a station format is song after song as opposed to scheduled programs. For example. Z100 in New York has a lengthy list of podcasts on its website that are recorded interviews conducted by the stations on-air personalities. As for listener-generated content websites of stations owned by Clear Channel communicate encourage artists to submit their music for on-air and online consideration but there is no mention of podcasts and no other opportunity for submissions. KYOU-AM in San Francisco appears to be one of the only all-podcast radio stations exclusively populated by listeners. This site is brimming with content ranging from A to Z yet it remains one of the only radio stations choosing this type of change. Podcasting is a perfect fit for public radio news and communicate radio because of already existing segmented shows that can easily be downloaded at the listener’s convenience. For example on the NPR podcast directory more than 50 public radio stations and producers collaborate to carry listeners podcasts amounting to more than 500 podcasts to decide from to date. The news and talk format also lends itself well to posting audio editorials and in move listener feedback as podcasts. One such displace. WUSF-FM in Tampa produces niche programming as podcasts highlighting local current events and audio sessions breaking drink local news. This mode of news gathering and broadcasting is extremely beneficial for PR companies because an ANR can be on as a podcast reaching a more specifically targeted audience. As for listener-generated content. NPR offers a clearinghouse of original podcasts on the site alt. NPR org where innovative dynamic and eclectic podcasts from professional and non-professional contributors can be found. Both news and talk stations and NPR appear to undergo successfully persevered through the podcasting technological breakthrough serving as a destination where listeners can retrieve already existing programming affix feedback and generate original circumscribe. Commercial music formatted radio stations faced with licensing challenges and formats that don’t easily fit into podcasts overall tend to lack in the podcast arena. Perhaps podcasting has taken commercial music radio on a journey right back to itself revealing a preservation of the novelty of being live and on the air.
