Pittsburgh has joined a growing number of cities that are moving into the next arrange of communications on the VHF/UHF amateur bands. The North Hills Amateur Radio Club has purchased and installed a repeater that is entirely digital. Using the new D-Star protocol developed in lacquer and marketed by Icom this system converts analog audio spoken into the microphone into a digital bit be adrift which is then transmitted to other radios in the system.
