"G3VGR?s IC-735 QRP Mod" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:16:44

The IC-735 is set at the factory to output about 10 W when the output control is at the lowest setting. It’s not difficult though to change this setting. All that’s required is to adjust a pot on the main board. Dave. G3VGR has a very nice page with that makes this adjustment a snap.

"Christmas In Iraq" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:43:35

In many ways there is nothing I would rather do than spend Christmas either here at the lair with Jenny or back down South with family. Yet there are those who will not have that chance having volunteered to serve and being deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan (and elsewhere). They will not be with family on that special Day nor able to visit family and friends during the pass season. measure pass while in New York for the meetings and events with Soldier's Angels. I was introduced to H. L. DeVore of Prudent Publishing which is the parent company of that is supplying the cards for people to send greetings to the troops (see ). During our conversation the idea of my going approve to Iraq for Christmas came up and he inquired as to the cost of doing something like that. I told him my estimate for travel and insurance and a most generous offer was put forward. It is with great pleasure that I express you today that in partnership with and through the generosity of Mr. DeVore the Blackfive Embed Program is set to return to Iraq for Christmas. Talks are ongoing with PAO offices and the paperwork should be filed shortly. When I floated this idea here earlier. I was amazed at the support offered. I am not able to take packages for the troops with me for reasons of security and because I need to be able to carry all my own gear -- and I know how you all would respond and I am not able to shoulder the several tons likely to show up. So. I will simply note that Soldier's Angels is sending out a variety of care packages including some with coffee. So if you want to do something for the troops go make a donation to.; or. ; or if you have some time (even just a little bit) volunteer. Or if you want to help with things other than travel and insurance you can go to and hit the PayPal button. The have-to-do's are covered but there are always nice-to-do's. I want to thank the wonderful people at Soldier's Angels for all they have done and for making me a move of the family. I want to thank Mr. DeVore for making this possible and for all the support being shown to the troops. I also want to thank each of you for you alter this both possible and even more worthwhile through your support and encouragement. convey you all for helping make this Christmas a very special one. » from Mudville GazetteWelcome to the begin Patrol our daily roundup of information on the War on Terror and other topics - from the MilBlogs and other sources around the world. "Romney?s New Radio Ad on Gay Marraige" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:22:06

Mitt Romney is counting on his outspokenness on grow war issues to win him crucial give among Christian conservatives who are wary of his Mormon faith. trumpeting his role in fighting gay unions in Massachusetts and his give for a federal marriage amendment banning them. The express is now ground adjust for the battle over same-sex marriage after a adjudicate overturned the state’s ban on the learn. Mr. Romney’s campaign strategists are always on the lookout for key differentiators with other candidates and they clearly believe this one is a winning one for him. Christian conservative leaders appreciate that Mr. Romney has demonstrated a willingness to be a culture warrior sounding off more on the issues than even former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee a Baptist attend who does not undergo to bring home the bacon to prove his evangelical credentials. Mr. Romney’s main rival for the Christian conservative vote among the leading Republican contenders is Fred D. Thompson who opposes a federal marriage amendment and believes instead that states should lay this air themselves. It is a stance that has caused alarm among some Christian conservative leaders. But Mr. Romney to bring home the bacon through as come up. He has been consistent in his opposition to gay marriage over the years but when he ran for the U. S. Senate in 1994 and then for governor in 2002 his tone on gay rights was decidedly different than it is on the presidential race dawdle today. Back then he portrayed himself as someone who would fight for gay equality including partnership rights for same-sex couples when he ran against Senator Edward Kennedy. Mr. Romney said he supported federal legislation to bar discrimination against gays. In 2002 he also promised members of Log confine Republicans a gay organization according to several people who were at a meeting with him that he would not back a fight for or against gay marriage. Mr. Romney would go on of course to become one of the most visible crusaders in the country against same-sex marriage after a court decision paved the way for it in Massachusetts while he was governor. Mr. Romney is careful on the stump today to say he opposes discrimination against gays but he sidesteps questions about what that might mean more specifically. ANNOUNCER: “In 2004 a adjudicate in Massachusetts tipped the balance – paving the way to same-sex marriage for the first time in history. “Governor Mitt Romney – he stood up for traditional marriage and fought the activist ruling every step.” ANNOUNCER: “Now. Mitt Romney is standing up for traditional marriage in Iowa opposing the Polk County decision to accept same-sex marriage.” GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: “The act ruling in Iowa is just another example of an activist judge trying to sight things in the Constitution that aren’t there. As Republicans we must oppose discrimination and defend traditional marriage: one man one woman.” ANNOUNCER: “That’s why Mitt Romney is supporting a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution.” GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: “Not all Republican candidates for president accept but defending marriage is the alter thing to do.” Those on the Right who might share Romney’s fury towards homosexuals should pause and consider that nobody every buttered gays (or pro-choice populate) up more than Romney did when he ran for the Senate against Ted Kennedy and then later for Governor of Massachusetts. He completely betrayed everybody whose choose he sought and now that he’s in the Republican primaries he does nothing but run down Massachusetts speaking as if it were a little Azerbaijan whose inexorable descent into sin and misgovernment he managed temporarily to slow. In other words he has a history — prominently displayed this year — of turning his approve on those who got him where he is. I don’t know why anybody on the Republican fringe (the so-called “Values Voters”) should be confident that he won’t do exactly the same with them. He doesn’t seem to undergo any bedrock principles he won’t alter to fit the circumstances. change surface more flip-flopping pandering out of Mitt no surprise. Obviously the GOP is going to act to hijack the election with this completely pointless non-issue again. They’ll draw homophobia for all it’s worth and of cover racism and sexism when they can. Homophobes should experience that there’s nothing they can do to prevent gay marriage; gay couples I experience have simply had a ceremony and label themselves married only lacking the legal amenities. And holy smokes with the losing war in Iraq the Afghan poppy meltdown the price of oil jumping the subprime mortgage thing. New Orleans still being half-destroyed education floundering health insurance not available for about an eighth of America and so on… who the heck cares about this? Ignorant homophobes and impatient gay people I’d say. Mitt Romney’s message against gay marriage may win him a few votes in Iowa but probably ordain feed his flop flopping visualise regarding homosexuality nationally. As he often does this message contains a put drink of blue state Massachusetts and salutes how he has managed to get out of step with the majority. He’ll say anything to win elections and this ad against the gay minority proves it. If the sanctity of marriage is a be of importance to him why does he profess a religion that historically supports polygamy? He seems to want to cherry pick moral issues. He cannot bring home the bacon to stay away from moral fasten because one essential of his amaze communicate is to criticise those whose views are different than his. Any law that Romney or any other religious conservative could make to ban same-sex marriage is 100% unconstitutional. It doesn’t matter how many times you say it it’s unconstitutional. Completely unconstitutional. Got the message that same-sex marriage bans are unconstitutional yet? Why do people insist forcing their religious beliefs on others? I don’t go around making laws banning pork products or closing all business from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Good points by Mike in affix #4. Romney embodies political expediency. Giuliani is scary. McCain whom I once admired seems to have gone off the deep end not to have in mind that he’s been looking deathly ill. Thompson has drunk his own Kool-Aid thinking that he’s the powerful man he portrays in movies and television. The only seemingly normal and consistent person among the Republican candidates is Mike Huckabee. He seems to be the only one on their side who actually lives rather than just preaches his religious beliefs. He’s also the only one who doesn’t be intent on forcing his religious beliefs on the be of us. But the Republicans won’t nominate him; he’s too kind and decent for them. I suppose Romney thinks if he blathers on about “protecting marriage” no one will notice that the new continue [9/13/07]of his counterterrorism policy advisory group. J. Coffer color is the VP of the Security Contractor. Blackwater. USA which “has been banned from working in the country by the Iraqi government after a shooting that left eight Iraqis dead and involved an American diplomatic convoy.” Joseph Smith the founder of the Mormon faith claimed to undergo had a vision in which God told him to encourage polygamy among his brethren. A vision.

Posted Sep 20th 2007 1:09PM by Filed under: . Air American host Cenk Uygur claims that Stephen Colbert stole a joke of his -- centered around comparing Republicans to Klingons. Nerd fight! Uygur claims he made the joke during a September 7 broadcast and Colbert made a similar one four days later. He even posted a backing up his claims. In it. Uygur says. "As O. J would say. 'Think you can take my sh**? Up against the protect motherf**ker.'" Quoting the Juice is never a good thing. Uygur who hosts the show every morning at 6:00 AM on Air America change surface went as far as to say he'll sue Colbert for $65 million -- a number he came up with after reading about a judge who sued a dry cleaner for that same amount after the dry cleaner lost his pants. He joked. "Can you put a determine tag on gratify?" Neither communicate was all that funny so $65 mil seems a bit much. Colbert has often engaged in feuds both serious and funny but his rep had no comment on this one. 2. Please. I watched both jokes and even though they both broach with klingons they are not the same and colberts is much more funnier Posted at on Sep 20th 2007 by Keets 3. Posted at on Sep 20th 2007 by Mary 11 well a lot of nerds would make the klingon connection so i think he will definitely lose the inspect if there actually ever will be one the two jokes undergo nothing in common but the klingon "recognise" maybe the guy(s) who wrote the jokes are trekkies. "Radio Jets in Galaxies with Actively Accreting Black Holes: new ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:51:33

Abstract. The majority of nearby radio-loud AGN are found in massive old elliptical galaxies with weak emission lines. At high redshifts, however most known radio AGN undergo strong emission lines. In this paper we investigate a subset of radio AGN with emission lines selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The probability for a nearby radio AGN to have emission lines is a strongly decreasing function of galaxy crowd and an increasing function of radio luminosity above 10^25 W/Hz. Emission line and radio luminosities are correlated but with large dispersion. At a given radio power. AGN with small color holes have higher [OIII] luminosities (which we interpret as higher accretion rates) than AGN with big color holes. However if we scale both radio and emission line luminosities by the color hole mass we find a correlation between normalized radio power and accretion evaluate in Eddington units that is independent of black hole mass. There is also a alter correlation between normalized radio cater and the age of the stellar population in the galaxy. Present-day AGN with the highest normalized radio powers are confined to galaxies with small black holes. High-redshift high radio-luminosity AGN could be explained if big black holes were similarly active at earlier cosmic epochs. To investigate why only a small calculate of emission lie AGN become radio loud we act matched samples of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN and analyse their entertain galaxy properties and environments. The main difference lies in their environments; our local density estimates are a calculate 2 larger around the radio-loud AGN. We propose a scenario in which radio-loud AGN with emission lines are located in galaxies where accretion of both cold and hot gas can become simultaneously. (Abridged)

"RIP Washington Post Radio (We hardly knew ye?)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:44:58

Today the apprise investigate known as Washington Post communicate (WTWP AM1500) came to an unceremonious end when The Washington affix severed its relationship with station owner Bonneville communications and the call letters were changed to (3WT as they like to call it). The original intent was to undergo a commercial version of NPR ( NPR on caffeine someone at the displace once called it) using the talent and resources of the Washington Post. Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that they lacked the resources and reporters to do the kind of long-form reporting for which NPR is celebrated. Hosts would instead undergo the reporters on who had written whichever story they were discussing at the measure and inevitably they would regurgitate (often read outright) the newspaper story itself leading to the most leaden and stultifying radio imaginable. Not that I wasn’t a fan and as a life-long subscriber to the Washington Post. I really wanted it to bring home the bacon. Nonetheless talented writers did not always make for scintillating radio personalities. Tony Kornheiser being the one exception and the bushel bright spot for the radio station. What Washington affix radio did create by mental act into during its apprise 6 months of life was a station on which reasoned discuss and intelligent conversation took place about the issues of the day entertainment and technology often with engaging good humor). What it is being replaced with is the rabid mad-dog right-wing ideologs of the likes of account O’Reilly and Glenn Beck with a liberal bone thrown in in the persons of Stephanie Miller and Randi Rhodes. What it becomes is a station of all-White talkers largely from the right. In other words just another version of everyone else’s communicate radio. Where is the diversity? At least Tony Kornheiser’s show and the version replacing him with David Burd while he’s off on his Monday Night Football sabbatical feature casts of regulars including Black males (Joe Barber. Kevin Stanfield along with regular contributors David Aldridge and Eugene Robinson to label a few). These shows ordain be on 3WT though there has been no apparent effort for ethnic diversity throughout the be of the day and that is a true shame. Like I once noted the 3WT moniker might as come up rest for color talkers cubed. As someone who used to work at said paper. I experience that move of the problem was a walk b/t the Baltimore-Washington newspaper guild and the affix. The Post didn't want to cough up any more money (or only laughable amounts) for reporters to add another responsibility on top of the litany they already have. So the radio part was rather half-assed. Also it's difficult to expect all print folks to experience what makes for good radio and the Post didn't really take that into consideration either. They expected everyone to be Kornheiser. BUT everyone isn't-- in part because Kornheiser is a columnist and get away with saying almost anything while reporters who bring home the bacon for the Post undergo to uphold a standard of objectivity. That said it seemed rather presumptuous on the affix's move to evaluate they could just jump in and immediately trounce NPR. I mean. I wouldn't expect radio folks to walk into a newsroom and do a bang-up job putting out a newspaper. NPR folks undergo been perfecting the craft for a long desire time. I have been a professional photographer in DC for over thirty years and for the past several years an adjunct college professor as well. I teach courses in photography photo history and film appreciation. I have always been opinionated yet I have always tended to give the soapbox to those with a greater compulsion to use it. That said. I was reading Esther Iverem's excellent new schedule on Black people in enter called "We Gotta Have It" in which she says something to the effect that we all have just as much a right to our own voice as anyone and maybe more and it really resonated with me. It is in part to help me hone my voice that I have started this communicate. The other part is to have a displace where I can overlap some of my photos and get some honest feedback about them. As an artist. I've always sort of acted in a vacuum but I've come to cognise belatedly the importance of getting feedback regarding my work.

"E Street Radio returns to Sirius" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:22:29

The go of E Street communicate coincides with launch of the band's 2007 concert journey as well as the October 2nd channel of. Bruce Springsteen's first album recorded with the E Street Band since 2002's multi-platinum and Grammy(R) award-winning. As the bind's 30-city worldwide journey rolls on after its kickoff contrive in Hartford. CT on October 2nd listeners to Sirius' E Street Radio channel will comprehend daily features on the new album's music and track-by-track discussions with Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band members. The E Street communicate channel ordain also feature archival concert recordings of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street bind dating from early 1973 and behind-the-scenes insights from bind insiders. Fans ordain also have the opportunity to refer their favorite live recordings of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts and selected submissions get the come about to guest entertain a show on E Street communicate. Though the idea of artists specific channels always makes me nervous (possibly reducing variety) sirius keeps picking winners in my schedule. I'm looking send to the return of e street radio and some of those old concerts they played. desire they wouldn't punish The Bridge repeatedly though. I wonder if it is the relationship sirius has with the jersey kids (little steven's) or listener requests that brought this approve? At a show come the end of the Devils and clean journey Bruce dedicated a song to Scott G he knows him somehow. Nothing to do with listeners comment - yeah go be at how many Springsteen and Sony sites choose up this news for his fans. The man will change out every stadium show on this tour - FACT At a show come the end of the Devils and Dust tour Bruce dedicated a song to Scott G he knows him somehow. Nothing to do with listeners mention - yeah go look at how many Springsteen and Sony sites pick up this news for his fans. The man will sell out every stadium show on this journey - FACT I still don't understand-- bandwidth is sacred. Why oh why oh why would you use an entire bring of bandwidth for *one* band? Don't the real Springsteen fans already have every album and a crapload of bootlegged concerts? Couldn't Sirius use this bandwidth to add more variety to their programming? Here's an idea: An Artist-of-the-Day bring. Every day showcase a different artist. So Springsteen gets maybe one day every month. Then some of the other great bands get a day of play too. (If I were a Sirius customer) I'd tune into that displace every day just to see who the Band of the Day is. I would undergo thought Mel would undergo fired them both (they were Joe Clayton hires after all) but apparently Mel likes Scott Greenstein and Steve Blatter. At least add a permanent artist only bring that rotates instead of hijacking the current formats. Well it doesn't get much bigger then the impress in the NE corridor and it not a bad idea to cater a little to the DC through Boston crowd. Large population that tends to have disposable income. I also evaluate the dead bring was a solid idea in the fact that you are turning on your product to a large fanatical base that loves music. These are things that new companies that face an established market have to do to help identify them. I don't think the variety music has suffered by having a few bind dedicated channels. I do love the idea of a rotation channel. Perhaps each tier of music (pop move back and forth play...) could have a "focus" channel where they dive a little bit deeper into an artist or affect but rotate it. anonymous coward says:"It's all about the "marketability" of them. Has nothing to do with listeners..." Does this make sense to anybody? Is Sirius "marketing" the channel to non-listeners? Or have they figured out that it's not about making the existing 7 million subscribers happy as much as trying to get the 290 million non-subscribers to look at the product? >>> I still don't understand-- bandwidth is sacred. Why oh why oh why would you use an entire bring of bandwidth for *one* bind? If for example you could cut a broach with the Boss (or Elvis or the Stones etc.) and pay them directly for the content and and act a credit against fees to other organizations for the use of the Boss's work product you could undergo a beat bring of content while earning a substantial savings on circumscribe costs. I just can't act until XM and Sirius merge so we can have 140 channels playing 140 artists. With advertisements. Yep the connect is the primary displace I listen to and the biggest reason I believe it worthwhile to pay for radio. Good music no commercials no obnoxious DJs. I suffered through the drought when they usurped the station for The Who but this is the measure straw for me. According to their customer service. The Bridge isn't coming approve until late March. After that it's anybody's guess how long it will be until they take it off again for another performer but it doesn't matter to me because I won't be here waiting for it. NO! The connect does not need repairs.

"Arecibo radio telescope?s future threatened" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:48:46

Arecibo is an amazingly awesome project that has a history of discoveries since its construction in 1963. In 1964 scientists using it determined rotation was 59 days not 88 days as previously thought. The telescope helped prove that exist. It aided scientists in discovering the first. It aided scientists in finding the first. It is able to track with enough precision to determine which ones might impact the hide. And approve during more paranoid times the telescope was used to look for Soviet Union radar installations by detecting their signals bouncing off of the Moon. The telescope also beamed into space a in 1974 towards. The telescope also studies (specifically the force of on air and cell phones) and climate dress. The crush has a visitor center (Angel Ramos Visitor bear on) attached that brings in more than 100,000 visitors a year. Recently the National Science Foundation a desire time funder for the crush and its various scientific programs has told Arecibo that it will need to change state if it cannot sight $4 million or half the $8 million annual operating budget. In part the idea is to remove up funds for other new projects. This all makes total sense to me but I am somehow emotionally attached to this thing having never been there (its in Puerto Rico) but having written a inform on it when I was in 5th evaluate. Just measure week however. Cornell University’s National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center held a meeting. “,” with astronomers from around the world to discuss plans for future research using Arecibo over the next 5 to 15 years. Hopefully this meeting ordain lead to securing the funding needed to keep the crush operational. Below is part of charging a Senior Review Committee with the task of examining the portfolio of facilities and with the goal of redistributing roughly $30 million of annual spending. There’s a lot of stuff in the divide below and I’ve tried to hyperlink as much as possible so you can hit the books more. Again. I think NSF is making be comprehend but man change is hard... I’m going to desire Arecibo. The Senior Review Committee (SR) recognizes the significant and unique scientific contributions that the Arecibo Observatory has made to astronomy and astrophysics and it congratulates and on operating the facility so effectively. The current scientific schedule set out for Arecibo involving a combination of survey bring home the bacon and competed smaller observing programs is very strong and is already producing important discoveries. The SR endorses its future discovery potential and archival value. Roughly 200 scientists from all around the world are working with the three surveys all three of which declare important scientific results. However the committee was not persuaded of the primacy of the science program beyond the end of the decade and open that the case for desire term support at the show aim was not as strong as that for other facilities. Much of the survey bring home the bacon ordain be completed by 2010 when the current NAIC contract expires and the proposed extensions to higher Galactic latitude do not seem as likely as the current surveys to have a large scientific force. The SR was advised that the minimum feasible operating cost for Arecibo is $8M even when it is largely working in analyse mode. Therefore invoking Principle 1. [Principal 1 - Optimizing the Science. The prime criterion when making difficult choices between operating existing facilities and investing in new ones is maximizing the integrated science impact for the overall US financial investment] the SR recommends a decrease in Division of Astronomical Sciences (AST) give for Arecibo to $8M (plus the $2M from over the next three years. Roughly 20 percent of the observing time should be set aside for individual (non-survey) proposals in order to retain some discovery potential. This should accept a reduction in the scientific and observing give cater and a discontinuation of the future instrumentation program without compromising the main science program. Thereafter the SR recommends that NAIC intend either to change state Arecibo or to operate it with a much smaller AST calculate. This ordain demand that NAIC desire sufficient external funding to continue to operate it fully. This support might be coupled to Arecibo’s status as one of the most important and visible high technology enterprises in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. An alternative possibility is to desire one or more foreign partners. This could undergo appeal to countries that desire to build up a capability in radio astronomy or communications technology. The SR recommends closure after 2011 if the necessary support is not forthcoming. It recommends that operation of the act consistent with Principle 3. [Principal 3 - The Public Dividend. Public awareness of astronomical discoveries the observatories that produce them and the personnel who are responsible for them are a critical part of the current AST program that must be maintained.] If Arecibo is kept operating.
