"Journal #3 NPR Radio Interview Analysis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:18:26

At the beginning of the report Robert Seagal who acts just like an anchor gave background information on the topic. Seagal states that 100,000 children in the U. S is brought to juvenile correction and then explains the differences between Texas and Missouri. Texas houses their juveniles in an adult style facility and Missouri houses their juveniles in a college dorm like facility. He then introduces Jason Beaubien who is the reporter of this story. Beaubien starts the interview by introducing a source named Tim Decker who runs the Missouri Division of Youth Services. Beaubien also mentions that Decker's goal for the youth is to not turn back after their treatment. Then Decker speaks and says that 7.3% discharged children with new offenses come back to them and they have a low offense rate. Beaubien after this statement then compares the rate to California which is 70% to 80% of children that may go back with new offenses. Decker than speaks that in his facility they treat their young students firmly seriously and humanely. His first primary action is public safety and if these young people are a problem in the community then it must stop. After the interview with Tim Decker. Jason Beaubien interviews a student named Reggie. Reggie's testimonial about how his life is changing due to the treatment in this facility makes a huge impact on the story. Beaubien speaks about Reggie's background and how chaotic his life was in the past. While analyzing this interview I noticed that Beaubien did not formally ask the interviewee questions instead his statements would lead into what the interviewee is going to say next and this style seems to be his strategy. There are many examples on the second paragraph on how Beaubien does this. The background information also plays an effect on the story and also knowing the interviewees beforehand. I've learned that an interview does not always have to be a question from the interviewer and the interviewee would have to answer in response to what was asked. There are other strategies that can make the interview successful.(359)

"Why More NPR Lobbying Against XM-Sirius Merger?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:46:17

From. September 16. 2007By Matthew LasarApparently it wasn’t enough for National Public Radio (NPR) to file lengthy opposition statements in July and August with the Federal Communications Commission against the proposed XM/Sirius merger. On Wednesday. September 12th an NPR Vice President met with assistants to three FCC Commissioners to reiterate public radio’s call for a contradict on the union of the two air radio services. NPR’s Mike Riksen told FCC staffers that “the SDARS [Satellite Digital Audio Radio service] market protect is a command prohibiting the merger of the only two SDARS providers [XM and Sirius] and that it should neither be waived nor modified in this case.”What this means in non-eye glazing English is when the FCC authorized the SDARS service in 1997 the agency added a proviso that no single entity should be allowed to control all the allocated spectrum. NPR wants the FCC to stand abstain to that rule. The challenge is why National Public communicate which doesn’t file with the FCC all that much has change state so adamant and aggressive about this issue? NPR has offered a variety of arguments against the merger. LLFCC finds most convincing among them the fear that a united XM/Sirius will put it at a discriminate on the air platform. NPR programs two channels for Sirius. One of its briefs suggests that XM and Sirius’s competitive relationship gave the function the edge when it came time to negotiate space for public radio in digital radio satellite-land: “NPR believes it was able to enter into an exclusive arrangement with Sirius to provide 2 channels of programming because both parties perceived benefits in such an arrangement.18 NPR was able to develop programming for a new distribution platform in a way that clearly established NPR’s SDARS identity. Sirius obtained a competitive advantage over its competitor. XM as the exclusive SDARS source of NPR programming. If NPR were to become part of a mix of program producers on a ‘public radio’ bring the value of the distribution channel would clearly be diminished although the combined entity as the bushel source of SDARS programming would continue to enjoy SDARS exclusivity. While there is no guarantee that NPR will be able to discuss equally favorable or even minimally acceptable terms with either Sirius or XM in the event the Consolidated Application is denied a monopoly provider of SDARS function would have a clear economic incentive and market opportunity to offer less favorable terms to NPR.” While there is no arguing with this self-interested narrative less clear are NPR’s latest arguments against the union which go off more as vague observations than anything else:“NPR emphasized that as a program producer it views the Satellite Digital Audio communicate Services (‘SDARS’) distribution platform as serving a distinct product merchandise,” Riksen told top aides to Michael Copps. Jonathan Adelstein and Robert McDowell on Wednesday. “and that audience research confirms that public radio listeners who are SDARS subscribers do not treat public radio broadcasting and SDARS as substitutable services.”To give this … thesis (?). NPR forwarded a Walrus Research/Audiographics chew over on how public radio fans use satellite radio. Commissioned by the Radio investigate Consortium the February 2006 chew over concludes that: * About 500,000 public radio listeners told Arbitron that they listened to XM or Sirius radio in 2005. To put it more precisely: “Two in one-hundred public radio listeners also listen to XM or Sirius.” * Public radio’s stagnant audience growth cannot be attributed to the rise of XM and Sirius. “change surface the most aggressive assumptions show that ‘measure lost to XM and Sirius’ can account for no more than a one-quarter of one percent decline in listening between 2003 and 2005.” * In fact: “If XM and Sirius are cannibalizing anything among our listeners it is their listening to commercial radio.”If anything these statistics show a rather marginal relationship between satellite and public radio at least at this inform. Thus NPR’s full act press against the XM/Sirius merger may go off to some as a bit heavy handed. But like various public arouse groups who have filed against the union. NPR says they are willing to evaluate the combination—under certain circumstances. Among public radio’s conditions that a merged XM/Sirius yield enough spectrum to accept a new SDARS entrant into the field. This article is from. One thing I’ve been meaning to post about since seeing it mentioned on Matt Chamberlain’s MySpace is a collaboration between Matt renowned guitarist and producers and. Well last week. Floratone’s recently released album was and as I listened to the sight while driving home from bring home the bacon thought. “Self there are gonna be a few mentions of this in the Undented mailbox tonight.” Sure enough. Richard Handal and SomaRiot proved me right. Floratone is an intriguing communicate: the result of several days of remove jamming by Matt and Bill back in 2005 followed by fag and Lee digging through the tapes to sight and produce the 11-track album from the raw material that Matt and account laid down. Between the several songs streaming on and the NPR piece curious parties can get a good idea of what the music sounds like. It’s all instrumental but don’t let the lack of words keep you from checking out one of the. IMHO more interesting releases of the year. the latest album by singer-songwriter and pianist which just happened to be produced by Eric Rosse. Thanks to Kate for that tidbit (and apologies for taking so desire to have in mind it here) and Ryno for reminding me about Eric’s production ascribe which I forgot to have in mind in last night’s adrenalin-powered modify haze.
