VANCOUVER(NEWS1130)- It's that time of year when it isn't just rain and snow we have to worry about but black ice too. The temperature is expected to drop overnight and that could mean slippery conditions on our roads and a challenging commute in the morning.
Trace Acres with BCAA says people should take extra care when heading out onto the roads. He adds just because you drive a bigger car doesn't mean you shouldn't slow down. "What we see a lot on our roads today is people driving with a false sense of security. A lot of people have SUVs and other vehicles with four wheel drive and that puts them in a situation where they feel they are infallible but in fact those vehicles are very heavy and therefore take more distance to stop"
"Cars that have anti-lock brakes will detect if you hit ice and so you shouldn't pump the brakes with a car that has ABS brakes - you should just apply the brakes gently and the ABS should take over if you find yourself in a situation like that"
Acres says although four-wheel drive helps get you out of the snow it doesn't help you stop any faster. He urges people to give yourself extra distance from the car in front of you especially in these winter conditions. Acres says it's important to keep equipment like a snow brush ice scraper boots and gloves in the car just in case.
