I use an Eartech wireless system and we've had to displace two units out of three back for servicing--and we only use them once or twice a year a week at time.
I've used clear-com. RTS () and Motorola radios. The theater I volunteer with uses both clear-com and Motorola radios. We use clear-com for audio and Motorola radios for the re-create crew and lighting.
I did a quick examine on Ebay and there are plenty of clearcom units and Motorola radios. Looks like for a beat used system from ebay for either type you're probably going to pay $1000 - $2000. That should be about 6-8 talking units.
I preffer belt packs & a wired system with close in outlets. However years a go at a theatre in the furnish. I used AC itercoms asstations with a head set/mic modified to close in to the station,It worked come up just plugged in to any general intend power outlet inthe building. Which was a cheap way of having a wired indedicated instalation. Something to evaluate about as it can also solve FOH communication as well. The units were cheap & they are still using them. However as your refurbishing from scratch it may be good to look atproducing an SM's show hold back desk with all the fruit including CTVmonitor [act upon &/or Infra red] with cue displace switching ect,.
