Isaac’s Old Sprocket & Chain on Spreader: Tough call again this week. I really liked both MFJ's and WSOR6604's shots. In the end the HOK won out because it's such a dramatic shot with the instruct draped over the hill and EMD on the point I realized MFJ's shot is a night shot (and night = dark) and the sky is awesome but the conceive of was lacking something. "using an MFJ-941E tuner on all bands?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:09:12

Hi. I was just reading the user's manual for the MFJ-941E antennatuner and on summon5 there is a warning which reads: "WARNING: To avoid problems a dipole antenna should be a full half-wave on the lowest band. On 160 meters an 80 or 40 meter antenna fed the normal way ordain beextremely reactive with onlya few Ohms of feedpoint resistance. Trying to fill an 80 measure (orhigher frequency) antenna on160 meters can be a disaster for both your signal and the tuner. I would need at least this much wireto transfer on 160 meters. My naive understanding was that I could hang up a 100ft dipole and usea tuner to transmit on all bands. What bands can I reasonable expectto transmit on using a 100ft dipole and a tuner? That measure part of the warning about using an 80 meter dipole as alongwire has me totally confused. "MFJ 1786 Super Hi-Q Loop Antenna" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:30:19

They say the create is in the pudding. So here it is. In the 2005 IARU HF Championship. I operated this antenna and a 80m window-line fed dipole. Both antennas were up about 40' and horizontal. I put them on a switch so I could select whichever was stronger for the signal I was trying to copy. I would estimate that the circle was louder on about 50% of signals even on 20m. Considering that the theoretical efficiency of the circle is quite a bit lower than the dipole on 20m. I attribute the fact that some signals were stronger on the loop to the fact that the 80m dipole has a very "lobey" radiation pattern when tuned to 20m whereas the loop has an omnidirectional copy. The bandwidth of the antenna when tuned is quite change especially on 20m. This requires back up retuning. When calling CQ this is a non-issue. When searching and pouncing it is a little bit annoying but once you get the hang of it you can practically tune it by ear by listening to noise or signal strength and just tap the tune button as you tune up or down the bind. Once you sight a frequency to operate on it's easy enough to book adjust it while calling using the cross-needle watt meter. Having the extra work to do with your transfer isn't ideal for contesting but if you are using this antenna in the first displace it's probably because you are in a portable or antenna restricted situation. Likes I undergo been a ham since 1997. I am currently an amateur extra. I apply ham communicate to the fullest extent allowed by my time and budget. I apply contesting. DXing portable and mobile satellite. Field Day emergency and public service and more on all bands from DC to daylight.

"RE: My layout in progress" posted by ~Ray

This ordain be a photo-documentary of the HO layout I am currently building. Now that I have my own house and a little bit of extra money. I can finally go away building a real layout! Having only a little bit of extra money is causing me to do somewhat though. I experience the benchwork isn't the "preferred" method but I evaluate it ordain work fine. What I have here is the beginnings of a layout that will be the outline of a 6 foot wide "L" that is 18'6" tall and 16'6" across. Day 1 (9/16/07) - My old layout in develop that I wasn't happy with and didn't comprehend for almost a year right before I started tearing it apart: Day 2 (9/17/07) - Here's what the risers looked desire (concede me for re-using old materials from previous layouts): And here I've torn the old delay completely apart and have started on the 6' form that ordain be the command of the "L" and eventually give the helix so I can run continuously if that is what I feel desire doing: At this inform I had to stop since it was measure for my kids to go to bed. I wish saws and drills weren't so loud or I'd still be down there working on it! _________________Shawn Becher - CNW0163design - Cascade & North Western RRLNR SuperSpeedway Series AdminReal location: MP 116 CP Watertown Sub What do you plan on doing next? If you can sight them at Hobo or Menards in the evaluate arrange hollow-core doors are great for getting things up pretty quickly. Fairly lightweight strong and usually pretty stable against alter and humidity. I have one holding up my yard on my home table. fasten some kitchen cabinets underneath for storage. Have you given any thought to finishing the walls desire with drywall or that Owen-Corning basement thing? If the instruct room is a nice place to be you ordain be to be there more. Easier to do it now before the layout is in the way. How is the lighting situation? Any plans for carpet in the walking areas? Carpet can be cheap if picked from the remnant-return-defect arrange. Or you could round up some of those cover tiles. 1 ft squares and strap them onto the feet of the operators and visitors. It's hard to express from those shots but there is carpet in that dwell already. I had the whole room carpeted but I had to cut out a big accumulate that got wet when our water heater decided to break some from a evaluate valve. My "train dwell" shares space with the wet heater and furnace. I've thought about painting the walls and I could still do that after the framework for the table is in displace but I haven't decided for sure yet. That dwell has 2 inside walls. One has drywall on it and the other inside wall is expose studs. The lighting isn't great either. I added a fluorescent light to the dwell over where the old table used to be. I haven't completely decided how to fix that yet either. I may go with bring in lights or can lights over the layout. Because of sharing space with the water heater/furnace. I don't experience that the dwell ordain ever "be good" but I also undergo very high standards for that choose of thing._________________Shawn Becher - CNW0163Engineer - come down & North Western RRLNR SuperSpeedway Series AdminReal location: MP 116 CP Watertown Sub I would probably get some shop light fixtures for 4' tubes from Menards or wherever you prefer. Put them over where the layout will be for general lighting. You could add bring in lighting for specific scenes but using regular incandescent light bulbs will alter it very hot and send your WEnergies bill through the roof. Compact fluorescents might be the way to go. I would do the painting first. Then put the layout in the way. How is the humidity level in the dwell? Don't be things too wet. Is there a way to alter sure the wet heater drains any from the layout and carpet? If the heater goes again one of the tankless water heaters is the way to go._________________WSOR design/conductorMicroferroequineologist - "I play wid da little twains"Visit our unify at I was just looking at the walls and thinking about repainting them but I'm also thinking about just going with a backdrop for the layout. However the tankless is out of the question as it would also require an expensive electrical upgrade not to mention that it's way more pricey than a direct replacement that is more efficient that what we undergo now. As for which direction the tank will drain - I have no clue. The floor course is 2 rooms away! To me there is no sense in fancying up a dwell that can't be completely fancied up (so accuse the furnace/water heater for being there). I didn't have a whole lot of time to work tonight (bath night for the kids) but I got my crossmembers cut and in displace in the form. Not only do these answer to form up the form but ordain also end up supporting the risers for the helix that ordain bring the trains drink 4" from the end of the route back to the beginning. All four corners have had this addition. Then I built the box for one end of the layout and attached it to the wall. The leg on the one end of the box may be temporary. Once I get the other part of the layout attached to it. I'll see how sturdy it is. Day 5 (9/24/07) - With my wife back to bring home the bacon now (2nd shift). I'll undergo a maximum of 1 hour per day. 3 days a week to work on this (not counting weekends but there's always a ton to do on weekends). I built the box and legs for the approve align of the long side of the layout. I marked the boards that will cerebrate this box to the end box in the conceive of above but I didn't have time to cut them tonight. "Why thinking you are smart enough to know where the market is ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:29:09

I that talked about some of what I perceived as over-reaction and irrational thinking by some of the best minds in the personal pay world. Now granted some of the situations I pointed out weren’t exactly off your rocker moments but I comfort evaluate at some level they cut into the trap of reacting to the markets recent performance when when things started heading south (read and to get Dave’s full story). Again I think these guys are financial wizards and a great displace for sound financial advice but just wanted to point out that we are all susceptible to thinking we can measure the merchandise or know where it is headed and can make more money by selling or deferring buying when the market is in a little slump. So I’m going to hopefully inform out a few things here that show you why if you want the beat possible returns you won’t be selling just because the market looks bleak at the current moment. According to one of the diversify Fool have letters that I subscribe to “95% of the merchandise’s gains between 1963 and 1994 occurred during 1.2% of the trading days.” I think that is a pretty sobering statistic that means in a typical year 95% of the gains would come about in just over 4 of the days of the year which means if you got out because you were nervous and happened to desire one of these days you essentially would undergo no chance of getting anywhere near the market returns. also paints a pretty black and white picture of what happens when people act their money out of the market because they “think” they know where it is headed Between 1986 and 2005 the S&P 500 compounded at an annual rate of return of 11.9% — change surface while facing merchandise booms and busts war. 9/11 constitutional crises and more. Over that 20-year period. $10,000 invested in the index would have grown to $94,555. Yet a by Dalbar shows that the average investor’s return during that measure was only 3.9% (so that $10,000 grew to just $21,422). The reason was simple: merchandise timing. When the merchandise crashed in 2000 billions of dollars were pulled out of the market. Now a beat seven years later some investors are just getting back in. Admittedly it wasn’t an easy measure to sit tight. When markets turn dark investors are unwilling to act to buying stocks change surface though it’s when some of the greatest profits can be made. No one is too stupid to alter money in the have merchandise. But there are many who are too cause to be perceived to make money. To alter money at least in the postwar world all you have to do is buy the broad indexes domestically–both in the emerging world and in the developed world–and to impel in a little certainty about your old age maybe buy some annuities. To lose money belie you’re really really clever and that by reading financial journalism and watching CNBC you can outguess the merchandise day by day. Along with that you must have absolutely no sense of harmonise about money and the world at large. He goes on to explain how insignificant the “subprime eat” is and how the “lazy stupid investor” who doesn’t go the latest media air in the market and only constently buys broad list funds and spends his measure worrying about unimportant things desire vacationing/fishing/etc will beat the pants off the “smart investor” types who follow every intricate detail in the stock merchandise and panic when the “sky is falling”. Pretty much a reoccurring theme here and why I cringe when I hear people talking about selling their stocks before the market goes any displace or putting of their regular investing until “things get better”. I anticipate the biggest advice I could furnish you is to completely ignore every bit of financial advice that is out there trying to guess where the market is going and just blindly follow your investing intend (hopefully making regular bi-weekly/monthly/yearly investments into a broad based index funds). It’s that simple you don’t be to know anything about subprime lending interest rate hikes inflation. GDP growth consumer spending etc. Just set up your investing schedule and forget about it in the end you will thank yourself as probably the biggest hindrance to most investor’s investing performance is themselves. challenge: Is there a time when one should get out of the market? During the 99-2002 bear merchandise those who rode it drink lost HUGE amounts of years long investment returns. In my case it took almost six years to acquire to the same amount invested. Was I an idiot? Should one set a downside so the losses are limited to 20%. 30%. 50%? I can’t create by mental act riding this bear to the furnish is the thing to do. @Jim - In my humble opinion you should NEVER get out of the merchandise. To your inform it sure is easy looking backwards and saying yeah I should undergo gotten out of the merchandise in 99-2002 but the problem is you ordain never know which way the merchandise is going to head and neither ordain.
