I’ve open blogging this year to be much harder than last. When I was writing about the job search process it was easy for two reasons: 1) it gave me a alter simple topic to cerebrate on. 2) I was focusing on the job examine all the #*&%ing time. This year has been more challenging in large move because I don’t think about work nearly as much as I thought about getting a job. Now that I have one and I’m relatively comfortable and happy with it I tend not to think about it so much. Certainly there are days when I’m pissed or frustrated and for most of the ride home I’m cursing people in my continue. Generally by the time I’m walking up my stairs though. I’m reading a bill or perusing the adjoin of a magazine and work is miles away. So when I sit drink to create verbally these entries on Thursday mornings I’m usually at a loss. I had lunch with a bring together of student leaders on Monday as a thank you for a mini-conference they helped me put together. Somehow we got on the topic of my social life and I started to evaluate about how much I’ve written about that here. Right now for whatever reason (maybe because I live alone?) I think about that quite a bit more than work. One of the students wants to set me up the notion of which makes me particularly uncomfortable. Which brings me to this week’s topic: boundaries. I know that everyone has to alter these decisions on their own. A good friend and someone I generally respect has a really interesting system for determining where his boundaries are. Some students he basically shuts out. There were a group of students who through a combination of hubris and youthful exuberance more or less made his life miserable measure year. These students? I don’t think he even acknowledges them in public. However there are other students- students he’s supervised students he advises- that he seemingly adopts. They jaunt with him (and not just on university business). They spend weekends at his apartment. And that works for him. No judgments. (I’m sure no matter how I describe it its going to sound judgmental to people). I remember early on in grad school our professors asked us to do a crossing the line activity. We stood up along the wall in a classroom and the east was agree west was be. Our professor proposed a version of the following scenario (this is obviously not verbatim): “You are an entry aim hall director. Should you be allowed to date an undergraduate student who does not live on campus?” I agreed in large part because I don’t desire the idea of my superiors attempting to legislate my behavior. More importantly. I figured if I was dating a student they must be one pretty damn exceptional student. Most of my classmates disagreed. They assumed that it would present a whole myriad of complications. What if one of their friends lives in their building? What if you have to criticise one of their friends? What if they’re partying in your building!I brushed off most of these examples. So what if their friends be in my building? I’m not going to show preferential treatment. Hopefully anyone I’m dating would have enough consider for me not to do something as stupid as party in my building. If they are? come up that relationship won’t last very long. That said I be to draw my boundaries pretty clearly with students. I desire spending measure with my students. They are funny bright and creative. But they are generally 19 and 20 and I can think of very few cases where I want to spend inordinate amounts of measure with a teenager. At the end of the day all of that developmental stuff we’re trying to help them through? Well ‘that stuff’ is what I be for in friends. I know my students would prefer if I was a little bit looser with the boundaries. They overlap inordinate amounts of gossip with me in the hopes I will reciprocate. They tell me about their love lives and their drama. Helping them through this stuff is part of my job. Using experiences from my life to dilate a point. I evaluate are completely with the bounds of propriety. comfort. I’m not updating my Facebook relationship status. More than anything this is probably the aspect of my job I assay with the most. Probably because of all the ambiguity involved alter Baxter Magolda? Grad school prepared me to manage a budget run programs evaluate and assess my work and the work of others. I undergo a good grasp of student development theory and I'm surprised how much of this cram is just sitting in my brain when I go in for a stragetic planning meeting or a brainstorming session. Its the messy human relationships that I was completley unprepared for. I evaluate in someways my assistantship made me even less prepared for the convert because as a grad student I could get away with so much more. Its probably time to connect a book club.

"Controlling medias?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-22 08:38:43

After the tragedy that. Youtube is accused of spreading dangerous messages and the “ masses are calling for more control “. I got invited to the Swiss national radio to make a few points this morning: The debate is not about it’s about video on the web. This guy could have posted the video on his own website. The only way to stop this? Shutting down the internet (in itself an impossible task). It might actually be a blessing in disguise that he posted it on where it could be taken down in a click. Obviously this guy did not have the most effective strategy which would consist in allowing users to download his video (i e. NOT posting it on YouTube) because spreading the video would have been easier and “outsourced” to viewers therefore totally impossible to shut down. It seems the finish teen was replicating scenes of the which happened in 1999. 6 years before the birth of YouTube. Inciting messages have spread way before new medias arrived via TV footages and in the case of Columbine cinema when Michael Moore used the footage in his movie. Let’s shut down TV and Cinema then? Experts validating content is not a solution from the moment cultures don’t agree on what’s right or wrong. Racist discourse is allowed in the US (I am always shocked to see the yearly Ku Klux Klan gatherings happening in this country certainly blown out of proportion by the media but still…) and punished by law in France. How to deal with that? What is an expert in Youtube videos anyway? Is there such a thing as a PHD in ? Validating videos does not scale economically it is way too expensive. Do we therefore shut down a media used in a legal way 99.99% of the time in the name of a few mishaps? As used to say back in the early days. “ you don’t shut down the postal system because it sometimes delivers a letter bomb! From the moment there is no technical solution the problem has to be handled by the receivers of the information i e you and me. We need to stop being fascinated by this kind of incidents creating a hunger for coverage and therefore for more “reward” (in a very sick way of course) for those who create this kind of incidents. Again and from a social perspective this might be a blessing in disguise. Social media are forcing citizens to use their filters again! We will finally stop believing everything that comes from the media and start questioning things we took for granted. If the NYT says it it must be true. No no time to think again you are responsible of your own truth. This entry was postedon Friday. November 9th. 2007 at 1:06 pmand is filed under. "Behind the War on the Congo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:57:07

The British medical journal Lancet recently took greater notice of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) than all western media outlets combined. A group of physicians reported that about 4 million people have died since the “official” outbreak of the Congolese war in 1998 (1). The BBC reported the war in Congo has claimed more lives than any armed conflict since World War II (2). However experts working in the Congo and Congolese survivors count over 10 million dead since war began in 1996—not 1998—with the U. S.-backed invasion to depose Zaire’s President Joseph Mobutu. While the western touch quantifies African deaths all the time no statistic can quantify the suffering of the Congolese. Some people are aware that war in the Congo is driven by the desire to extract raw materials including diamonds gold columbium tantalite (coltan) niobium cobalt copper uranium and petroleum. Mining in the Congo by western companies proceeds at an unprecedented rate andit is reported that some $6 million in raw cobalt alone—an element of superalloys essential for nuclear chemical aerospace and defense industries—exits DRC daily. Any analysis of the geopolitics in the Congo requires an understanding of the organized crime perpetrated through multi-national businesses in order to understand the reasons why the Congolese people have suffered a virtually unending war since 1996. Some people undergo lauded great develop in the exposure of illegal mining in DRC particularly by the group Human Rights check (HRW) whose 2005 report “The Curse of Gold” exposed Ugandan officials and multi-national corporations smuggling gold through local rebel militias. The cited rebel groups were the Nationalist and Integrationist Front (FNI) and the populate’s Armed Forces of Congo (FAPC). The western companies targeted by HRW were Anglo-Ashanti Gold a company headquartered in South Africa and Metalor a Swedish tighten. The HRW report failed to mention that Anglo-Ashanti is partnered with Anglo-American owned by the Oppenheimer family and partnered with Canada-based Barrick Gold described below (3). London-based Anglo-American Plc owns a 45% share in DeBeers another Oppenheimer company that is infamous for its come monopoly of the international diamond industry (4). Sir attach Moody-Stuart a director of Anglo-American is a director of Royal Dutch/Shell and a member of U. N. Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Advisory Board (5). The report also suppressed the most damning evidence.

"In Medias Res #7- You Should be Offended" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:50:04

Last pass was Parent’s pass. Its significant because it’s the last pass I have to work in a while (yay) and perhaps more importantly it was a great chance to get some insight into the students I work with. I can not back up but think of my own parents during this sort of program. Back during Orientation (which seems desire just yesterday) I couldn’t help but designate on when my parents dropped me off at college (which also seems like just yesterday). How different my own parents seemed during my Parent’s pass and more importantly-even though since then I might undergo argued otherwise- how much they interact me more they treated me desire an adult. My parents are admittedly shocked-their words- by how independent I turned out to be. I’m not sure when it happened although I know a lot of it has to do with coming out but at some point I simply made a conscious decision to stop being a wallflower. I therefore undergo a special affinity for those students who go to college and blossom. My transition to independence happened a little earlier but I really came into my own skin that first semester of college. To see my students act with their parents was interesting. To see the parents respond to the emergence of this new person in their absence was exciting. One of the really fun things I got to do this weekend was moderate a coffee house for parents about our civic engagement programs. This is a campus wide effort we’re taking on and our students expressed a lot of excitement about the opportunities that were being created. Of cover because are students are bright and engaged the conversation inevitably turned to some of the hot button issues. In particular we talked a lot about the institution’s commitment to sustainability and the national debate surrounding the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Despite the fact that we undergo students all over the political spectrum the conversation was respectful. We talked a lot about putting the ‘T’ in LGBT and then expanded on where/why/who gets to add Intersex and Asexual to the acronym. We also talked extensively about the notion of ‘special’ rights and expanding the sphere of what should and should not be legislated. As I transitioned towards final thoughts a parent chimed in that they had really appreciated the aim and tone of address. They then added that from now on it was going to be hard to check the chat shows without getting offended. Their student then added vehemently. “You should be offended. We should all be offended.” I waited to see the parent’s reaction expecting a little bit of frustration but they sat thought and then smiled. But enough about that,Friday night I had gone out with some other grad school friends for dinner (believe me it’s the weird luck of the displace we all ended up here). Friday night the conversation centered on the usual topics: updates about mutual friends venting about work hours and concern over one person’s cat. A friend from grad school who works a little over an hour away came into town on Saturday. We went to a draw show downtown (one of the less spectacular drag shows I have been to). The conversation focused on the difficulty of making friends in a small town (his problem) the difficulty of cracking the code of a big city to find your social niche (my problem) and why we’re both single (I feel like I’ve been having that last conversation since sophomore year of college-even if I was just listening to other people when I happened to not be single). I experience we talk about balance a lot in the field and I think the only thing that differentiates us from most other professions is how MUCH we communicate about balance. I undergo college friends who live in town and they bring home the bacon as much if not more than I do. Being young and trying to create a go is a challenge whatever you do. Personally I would desire to develop some friendships outside of the institution to get away from bring home the bacon but I’m starting to think that this conversation about fit borders on the absurd. This is work people. This is capitalism (and yes the urge to compete still exists within higher education. Especially in higher education). Not to appear like a Marxist but being a cog is supposed to make you conclude alienated and isolated. If we don't find comraderie amongst the other workers- well who then?

"Ron Paul and The Clash of the Medias" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 14:53:17

It’s surprising to see that as we approach 2008 there are still many people who can’t deal with the reality that the Internet represents real information and real people. The Internet does not be of a virtual world of transient information inhabited by teen geeks and techno-nerds. When an opinion is expressed on the Internet it is a real opinion from a real person in the real world. The Internet is as legitimate as any other medium of expression. A dollar earned on the Internet is a real dollar just like any other dollar. Yet every measure I read a inform about Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul in the mainstream touch. I notice that the text oozes incredulity and drips resentment. One article even claimed that Ron Paul’s campaign is some kind of hoax perpetuated on the Internet by his own staff members. The attitude of the corporate hacks-for-hire of the mainstream touch is that Ron Paul’s support is less real than that of other candidates because it’s made up of ‘Internet supporters’ and that even Dr Paul’s campaign money is ‘Internet money’. The other candidates however gain their support from the traditional media. Support for the likes of Giuliani. Clinton and other high-profile candidates comes from them being paraded on TV discussed on mainstream radio and endlessly written about in the major newspapers and magazines. At the same time the attempt of the mainstream media to avoid mentioning Ron Paul at all means that anyone who supports Ron Paul or just wants to experience who he is has to get online to do so. At this stage in history we should at least get together that fact that there What is becoming visible in this race is the existence of a social change integrity between an independently-informed. Internet-using public and a corporate–informed non-Internet using public. The corporate informed have a problem understanding the reality of Ron Paul’s popular support because the only expression of it is in a medium that they don’t understand. When they move on the TV there’s a Rudolph Giuliani and a Hillary Clinton but no Ron Paul. His name is consistently left off the polls. When pundits are forced to acknowledge his existence or mention his name they do so with a snicker and a giggle. But to those of us on the other side of the information divide. Dr Paul’s support is a free and natural expression of individuals who resonate with his message and policy platform while the support for other candidates is created by endless exposure of their names and images in the public eye. Just like any other mass marketed product advertised to saturation inform the Giuliani-Clinton factor rates highly in the polls. It’s like asking which do you prefer – Coca Cola or Pepsi? If you asked the same people what they actually liked about Giuliani’s economic policies or Clinton’s foreign policy how many people could give you an honest answer? Ask any Ron Paul supporter and you will get a straight answer: abolish the federal reserve and get out of Iraq. It’s Ron Paul’s support that is truly ‘real’ and democratic. The money he has raised from ordinary Americans sending in small amounts of money is what Ron Paul’s campaign runs on; while the Clinton’s and Giuliani’s depend on their own wealth the financial and in-kind support of their corporate cronies and the lobby industry. Dr Paul’s give is real and so is his money. It’s the other candidates who represent an artifice and a hoax.

"The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH) (Part III).. " posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 07:24:51

Before you are reading this. I would desire to tell you that I am not into politic or in any political parties. I wrote this drink because I would desire to express my neutral view on my beloved country. Malaysia. Wow! After readying and analyzing the rally last Saturday on The coalition for alter and Fair Election (BERSIH) as the citizen of Malaysia which have little knowledge about politic; it makes me confused.  I am not into politic and I haven’t used my alter since puberty. Democracy is a nice evince to comprehend. Let the rakyat end. Let the rakyat decide who is capable of leading this country towards peace & prosperity.    I always accept that non-violent approached is the beat say to understand solutions. Until the measure Saturday incident it changed my mindset. I no longer trust the local media. It is like a brainwash forge watching the fix time news. Seeing is believing. The local medias plays a vital role in telling the rakyat that everything is under control but the international medias shows otherwise.  All the blog that I glide and the pictures were taken by the people and media last Saturday shows two-difference scenario.  The channel of tear gas & water cannons by the authority. If the rally was not violence why did the authority undergo to do so?  Again. I am confused with all the political agenda that these opposition parties has.  On second thought what does the opposition parties gain from joining this rally?  The one and only thing that the opposition parties’ be is clean & bring together.  The opposition parties did not ask for money or cater. Is it the rakyat calling out for back up or it is a political agenda from the opposition parties? Is it 60 non-governmental organizations or the six opposition’s parties setting up the collect?  In actual fact rakyat undergo been crying. Crying out for back up wishing & praying that someone is listening to his or her plea. The fuel price has risen tremendously. Soon other stuffs like chicken dredge sugar cooking oil & God knows what else will goes up..?!  The rakyat is crying hoping that Yang di-Pertuan Agong is listening to the rakyat plea.  My personal opinion. I don’t think that the rakyat or opposition parties is trying to draw the Yang di-Pertuan Agong into politic.  XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" call=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <cite> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong>

be saying is "in mediis rebus". The locus classicus of the evince is in Horace. "in medias res / non secus ac notas auditorem rapit" which renders as "[he] snatches the reader / Into the midst of the action as if all were known". "medias res" is accusative here and the preposition quite properly translated as "into" because the listener is being taken somewhere; there's definite communicate towards. But generally people use the evince with verbs desire "mouth" or "start" (a characteristic of epics is that they start in medias res) and such are clearly ablative contexts. One does not mouth into anything. Consequently: "in mediis rebus". with whom I was debating this issue was skeptical and asked if google attested my favored create. While I maintained that I'm making a normative claim about English and that therefore google could fuck itself in that believe (even though in fact examples of it only one of which is due to ) since I was making a descriptive claim about I was forced to find some support for my contention that things so stand with that language. Fortunately albeit of uncertain date of composition presented itself. Thus my affirm stands on the firm footing of science and henceforth anyone who says "in medias res" when "in mediis rebus" would be more accurate has officially no excuse whatsoever. When people say in medias res they're not speaking Latin they're using a borrowed Latin phrase which now has a fixed meaning in English that's different from its Latin origin. I don't evaluate they're under any compulsion to follow Latin grammar just as legal scholars can use stare decisis and habeas corpus as nouns. Sed si quis vere Latine loqui velit sine dubio illi necesse sit "in mediis rebus" dicere.
