Tom Adams of consultancy Adams Media investigate in Carmel. Calif. predicts that by the end of the year households with stand-alone HD DVD players will be 600,000 and households with stand-alone Blu-ray players will total 400,000.
NPD ordain also revise upwards the HD DVD standalone sales estimates but they 'declined to give an calculate.'Adams also released figures for sales of movies:
I also thought the confirmation of 90,000 -100,000 units sold during the HD A2 blowout a bring together weeks ago was significant. Some were saying the Netflix executive use of the 30,000 was a high end for that pass sales this bind seems to affirm the larger number sold.
"The low price point was if anything a evaluate and a precursor," says Paul Erickson analyst at the NPD assort's DisplaySearch investigate firm. "They've shown that people will bite if the determine is low." Mr. Erickson says he ordain probably revise his projections for HD DVD player sales upward though he declined to give an estimate. Tom Adams of consultancy Adams Media Research in Carmel. Calif. predicts that by the end of the year households with stand-alone HD DVD players ordain be 600,000 and households with stand-alone Blu-ray players will total 400,000. The determine wars started late measure month when retailers like Wal-Mart. Amazon com Inc and go City Stores Inc dropped prices on a Toshiba player below $200 -- a critical level for electronic products that has sparked purchases in the past among general consumers. Then. Wal-Mart surprised industry observers by taking an additional $100 off in a 48-hour sale triggering other retailers to be the determine. The players sold out in minutes at some Wal-Mart stores. According to DisplaySearch. Toshiba sold 90,000 to 100,000 players in just two days.
A person familiar with the matter said that Wal-Mart bought about 55,000 HD-A2s from Toshiba for just under $200 apiece before the early November sale,
OK. I don't get the "600,000 to 400,000" thing. Haven't HD DVD standalones been outselling BD standalones for the vast majority of the year? (Say an average of 60:40.) Then you have 100,000 HD players moving earlier this month now another big displace this weekend... I have to think HD DVD players will outsell BD by at LEAST 3 to 1 this holiday. So how would HD DVD only be ahead 600,000 to 400,000? Seems the gap should (will) be wider.
These predictions are too low for HDDVD players. Wasn't the instaleed base of HDDVD standalone at 420k after the walmart sale? I doubt that only 180k ordain be sold in the 2 holiday months. I desire we could get official NPD numbers like the ones we get for videogames' consoles as it seems that these analysts like to advance sony products (same thing happens with consoles where the ps3 sales are always overpredicted and the xbox360/wii underpredicted).

It's just an estimation and it's hardly accurate most of the measure since there are many variables that can completely skew year end estimations more so with Toshiba's latest actions. Take it with a grain of flavor.

Yeah and it doesn't form very well with the head of Toshiba's HD DVD business sticking by Toshiba's estimate of one million players to be sold this schedule year let alone his prediction of 3 million sold next year.
"alter now we need to increase the size of the merchandise," Mr. Fujii says. He adds that Toshiba expects to sell change state to its goal of one million HD DVD players this schedule year and manifold that number next year.
Wow thanks now I experience how to read these reports. You take the Blu-Ray be and shave some off and take the HD DVD numbers and add to them.

Industry sources say that in the three days after Wal-Mart lowered the price of the second-generation HD-A2 player to less than $100 the big discount arrange sold 60,000 units. Other chains that matched the price both in stores and online brought the total sold to nearly 100,000 units. Add that to the estimated 320,000 dedicated HD DVD players already in homes and total household penetration is at about 420,000 units — a be change backers expect ordain exceed 500,000 units by the end of this month.
Was Adams the ones who said "HDTV may never catch-on" a few years ago or was that the other big media analyst company. label eludes me atm.
Today's and this past week's sales alone will move over 100,000 units. They globally dropped the MSRP (at least temporarily) to $199 and retailers are pricing their standard drops below that. This wasn't a know strategy and will change more than they predicted in these models.

If it is indeed 600K to 400K at the end of the year I think the PS3 ordain continue to give Blu-Ray a large lead in software sales and I suspect that as Blu-Ray players continue to fall in price we will see the standalone lead that HD DVD has cut away.
