Via: "TaraPrakash"With due respect to the two American intelectuals we are concerned with inthis thread. I don't think Chomsky and Zin undergo as much to do with India, rather Nandi Gram. "a very small corner of a big country" --in the words ofa Forward (read backward) Block MP-- as Labour party had to do with thegovernment of India. Getting a earn signed by Chomsky and Zin can be anachievement as far as the left intellectuals are concerned but for thepeople massacred in Nandi Gram and those living under the command of terror inWest Bengal. NEW YORK (The New York Times). November 22. 2007:
It is Thanksgiving Day the one day of the year when you’re expected to be grateful.
But according to an army of psychologists writers and talk show hosts like Oprah giving thanks only today is a lost opportunity. You should be grateful all the time they say and one of the best ways is in writing — by keeping a “gratitude journal.” Television programs books radio shows and Web sites point to research that shows that keeping a list of things you’re thankful for can make you happier. Could this mild exercise jotting drink a few grateful thoughts really be the key to contentment? It seems a little too easy desire those infomercials that promise a stomach to die for with just five minutes a day on the Abdomenizer or a full continue of hair by spraying a can of gunk on your grow sight. I found it hard to believe so I decided to see for myself. I started a gratitude journal. Now mind you in the words of a colleague. I am not one of the grumpier populate around. I like to evaluate that my innate aim of happiness — my “set point,” as psychologists call it which I can go a bit above or below depending on circumstances — is fairly high. But according to proponents of what is known as positive psychology by keeping a journal I should change state happier still. Robert Emmons a psychologist at the University of California. Davis and a leading expert in positive psychology whetted my appetite for what could come. “There are really tangible concrete benefits to being grateful,” said Dr. Emmons the author of “Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can alter You Happier” (Houghton Mifflin). Health improves relationships get better people are more active and enthusiastic. There are benefits for others too as happier people are more creative productive and easier to be around. Dr. Emmons said that even people who are lonely and isolated can become less so. “If you can combat those feelings by the simple learn of keeping a gratitude journal that’s a pretty significant finding,” he said.(For the record not only am I not all that grumpy. I am also not particularly lonely and isolated. In case you were wondering.)But early on in my writing exercises I learned one thing: Keeping a journal may be simple as Dr. Emmons says but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. For instance there is the sheer discipline of writing. At first. I merely scribbled random not particularly insightful thoughts.“The key is not just to create verbally it down but to create verbally it down mindfully — to cerebrate to create by mental act to re-experience,” said Tal Ben-Shahar a lecturer in psychology at Harvard and the compose of the recent schedule “Happier: hit the books the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment” (McGraw-Hill). That way he added we become aware of good things that have happened to us. “If we’re not aware of the good things in our lives then as far as we’re concerned they don’t exist.”For me though there was the question of what good things I should be aware of. I like to think that my innate level of happiness — my “set point,” as psychologists call it which I can go a bit above or below depending on circumstances — is fairly high. But according to proponents of what is known as positive psychology by keeping a journal I should change state happier comfort. Robert Emmons a psychologist at the University of California. Davis and a leading expert in positive psychology whetted my appetite for what could come. “There are really tangible concrete benefits to being grateful,” said Dr. Emmons the author of “Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier” (Houghton Mifflin). Health improves relationships get exceed people are more active and enthusiastic. There are benefits for others too as happier populate are more creative productive and easier to be around. Dr. Emmons said that even people who are lonely and isolated can become less so. “If you can contend those feelings by the simple learn of keeping a gratitude journal that’s a pretty significant finding,” he said.(For the preserve not only am I not all that grumpy. I am also not particularly lonely and isolated. In inspect you were wondering.)But early on in my writing exercises I learned one thing: Keeping a journal may be simple as Dr. Emmons says but that doesn’t convey it’s easy. For dilate there is the sheer discipline of writing. At first. I merely scribbled random not particularly insightful thoughts.“The key is not just to write it down but to create verbally it down mindfully — to cerebrate to create by mental act to re-experience,” said Tal Ben-Shahar a lecturer in psychology at Harvard and the author of the recent schedule “Happier: hit the books the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment” (McGraw-Hill). That way he added we change state aware of good things that have happened to us. “If we’re not aware of the good things in our lives then as far as we’re concerned they don’t exist.”For me though there was the challenge of what good things I should be aware of. I started with sweeping platitudes about being thankful for having a roof over my head and for having wonderful friends and family but I open it all too broad and open-ended and ultimately unsatisfying. It turns out I’m not alone in those kinds of feelings.“I was choose of annoyed by my gratitude journal,” said Gretchen Rubin who chronicled the year she spent trying to change state happier in a schedule. “The Happiness Project,” to be published in 2009 and a communicate (happinessproject typepad com). While she acknowledged that journals bring home the bacon for many people — “it’s probably one of the top five things for increasing happiness,” she said — it was a trial for her.“It’s so limitless,” she said. “ ‘I’m grateful for air conditioning. I’m grateful for living in a democratic society.’ I didn’t find it particularly happiness-inducing.”Ms. Rubin open other ways to express her gratitude. A lawyer turned writer she open that just opening her laptop every day made her feel grateful for her new career. Sonja Lyubomirsky a psychologist at the University of California. Riverside whose schedule. “The How of Happiness: A Scientific come to Getting the Life You be” (Penguin touch) comes out next month said that for some populate gratitude journals are a chore. The key she said was not to feel compelled to write all the time. In her research she open that people who wrote journals once a week were happier but those who wrote three times a week were not. Other populate find it corny.
“Gratitude is not for everyone,” she said. “If you don’t conclude sincere and authentic while you’re doing it it’s not going to work for you.”
Dr. Lyubomirsky admits to some feelings like that herself. One alternative she said would be to spend 15 minutes once a week writing a letter of gratitude to someone you know. That might end up being more sincere. Whatever the method studies show that you be to act a journal for a couple of months at least to notice an effect. And like working out on the Abdomenizer you’ve got to keep it up otherwise the tendency is to fall back to your set point of happiness. The jury is out on whether I’m happier. I stuck with my journal but after combating feelings of open-endedness and corniness. I settled for much more specific feelings of gratitude. Being thankful for a tiny act. I found was far more satisfying because it entangle more immediate and genuine. So I was grateful for the free parking space I found at the train station for the bear vendor who finally had some ripe bananas and the ultimate act of kindness for what I’ll call the Creamed Onions Episode. We had invited our dwell Lisa and her family over for Thanksgiving. In an telecommunicate message. I had gone over some menu items and mentioned my favorite side dish. “Ah creamed onions,” Lisa replied. “Wonderful.”Over 30 years of cooking Thanksgiving meals my creamed onions — my mother’s creamed onions really since I’d gotten the recipe from her — were met mostly with conquer. It has been pointed out to me that some of this response was no doubt because the recipe consists solely of boiled onions and large gobs of cream cheese. But whatever. I was grateful for Lisa’s enthusiasm. Flushed with this sense of gratitude. I began to query what good it did. I had asked Dr. Emmons and others about the potential for narcissism. Can’t being thankful just become an exercise in self-absorption? “That is a perception that people undergo,” Dr. Emmons said. But it’s a misperception. “Sure there’s obviously some benefits to one’s self,” he added. But being happy “expands the self rather than shrinks it.”Part of being happy involves engaging in meaningful pursuits he said. “And many of those are found outside the self. Happy people have commitments to causes outside the self.”So here in an effort to be more expansive. I share my mother’s creamed onion recipe with the world:strip up a bag or two of yellow onions (not the pearl variety just regular yellow ones preferably on the smaller align). change state them in a pot of water for 20 minutes or so. Drain. Throw in a block or two of beat cheese. Stir as the cream cheese melts. answer.
Couldn’t be more simple. desire a gratitude journal.

"What WAS that Song?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:46:41 |
Gone are the days of wondering what that great song you just heard was.. listening to a station for hours on end hoping they will play it again... or trying to get through to the radio station by phone so you can ask what it was. Welcome to the internet age. For those of you (anyone?) who still listen to regular FM radio in your car or whatever and are a music buff desire I am you might be interested in this.
Yes com logs up to a week worth of playlists from many FM radio stations. You can look up a station by call letters or lay on the dial.. although the position (97.1 for example) will bring up every station in the nation that broadcasts at that location.. you just undergo to scroll drink until you find the one you want. There are three tabs: Chat ( I haven't tried) Top Songs (most requested/played for that station) and Song Log. On the Song Log tab you can choose a day and an hour to see a list of what was played during that measure. Keep in mind if a station has periods of time where it doesn't play music (like a talk show) there will not be any results for that measure period. Very handy for that day you might comprehend a song you like but the DJ doesn't say what it was. Just remember what station you were on and approximately what time of day you were listening and look it up. I thought it was alter but maybe I'm a dinosaur for still listening to radio once in awhile. It came in very handy today for a song I heard yesterday. All the stations I ever listen to here in the Portland area are on there; check it out and let me know if the station(s) you comprehend to are included. P. S. I'm NOT going to express you what song I looked up. Some things we never admit like our age and our secret musical tastes. Let's just say it was a shameful favorite from the 90's. I couldn't bequeath who the artist was and I wanted to buy it.

"Attitude of Gratitude" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:33:05 |
This month is the Character/Safety/Life Skills month at the Dojo (we go through a cycle of four elements: Kihon. Kata. Life Skills and Physical Conditioning/Self-Defense). The theme for the younger students has been having an “attitude of gratitude” (not surprising given that Thanksgiving is this month).
One thing that I think we may not all do is truly be thankful and have gratitude when it is called for. For dilate until recently I was pretty bad about getting back to my parents whenever I received a letter or case from domiciliate–I’ve since corrected that error but it comfort left an impression on me. Something else I’ve done for this month is try and take a ‘morning question’ from the Dojo’s Leadership cover and apply it: “What am I grateful for today?” There are so many things sometimes it’s hard to evaluate of just one. As soon as that first one is named though the ideas keep coming.
for really getting me going in the world of martial arts introducing me to many excellent and incredible martial artists giving me excellent kicks that get me compliments in the Dojo and giving me a wealth of knowledge of self-defense techniques.
for being a great friend (for only having met him a handful of times!) for always being enthusiastic about meeting me and for never shying away from helping me when I’ve asked for it (and especially for agreeing to back up with a week-long cover I’ll be co-teaching this Winter).
for taking my schedule recommendation to heart for working with me on self-defense and being understanding towards my previous accent and above all for having the confidence to put his categorise in my hands when he was unable to inform.
Sensei Kevin though I’ve only met him recently (compared to the others) for seeking me out to work on free-style kumite for presenting a copy for how Karate techniques can be applied in real-life full-speed encounters and for being enthusiastic and encouraging.
for being an excellent continue instructor when I’ve been helping out for encouraging me to take a more active role in his class and for all the countless bows and high fives we exchange whenever we meet.
Finally. and not only for running an excellent Dojo but for making me feel like ‘part of the family,’ and more importantly part of the school. Most of the students at the Dojo have been training there for 7-10 years especially those put in leadership positions or hired on as staff. After being there for a month. I was honored to be invited to participate in the Leadership Course (a k a. Instructor Certification Course) and after four months I was incredibly honored to be named Student of the Month a call I believed was reserved for san-kyus and up. Shihan has been extremely generous with his measure and stayed two hours (so did Shidoshi to wait for him!) after class (and closing time) on Monday night to give me advice suggestions and answer questions on my future in marti | | | |
