"Reinventing Communities Series Part 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:10:47

For more than a decade. Northwest environmentalists have waged a war on what they believe unsustainable logging practices. They've filed lawsuit after lawsuit to stop timber sales. That's why in timber towns environmentalists are often blamed for ruining the economy. So what if the two sides called a truce and decided to work together to bring approve jobs AND preserve the forest? It's happening in the Northeast corner of Washington. And that's where we start our weeklong series on Northwest communities reinventing themselves. Correspondent Austin Jenkins reports. ON A DIRT ROAD IN THE COLVILLE NATIONAL FOREST. A HELICOPTER LOGGING OPERATION IS UNDERWAY. TWO MEN. TIM COLEMAN AND LLOYD MCGEE. WATCH AS THE HELICOPTER APPROACHES WITH ITS LOAD OF LOGS. NOT SO desire AGO. COLEMAN AND MCGEE WERE ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE contend OVER LOGGING IN NORTHWEST FORESTS. COLEMAN. WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP CONSERVATION NORTHWEST. WAS AN AVOWED TREEHUGGER. MCGREE: "We are finding so much more in common than we ever thought and it all started with not waving a white flag but just saying hey let's just have a peace summit you know?" OUT OF THAT PEACE SUMMIT – IN 2002 – WAS BORN THE NORTHEAST WASHINGTON FORESTRY COALITION. THE MEMBERS ARE PEOPLE WITH A STAKE IN WHAT HAPPENS IN THE MILLION ACRE COLVILLE NATIONAL plant. SIMILAR GROUPS HAVE FORMED IN NATIONAL FOREST–DEPENDANT COMMUNITIES IN IDAHO AND OREGON TOO. BUT THE NORTHEAST WASHINGTON FORESTRY COALITION STANDS OUT AS A MODEL – IN LARGE PART BECAUSE LOGGING ON THE COLVILLE HAS DOUBLED IN RECENT YEARS WITH NO APPEALS OR LAWSUITS BY ENVIRONMENTALISTS. ON THE DRIVE BACK FROM THE LOGGING SITE. COLEMAN SAYS HIS DAYS OF FIGHTING IN act ARE OVER. COLEMAN: "I've put drink the litigation pen and the appeal pen and I've said let's work on this from a point of cooperation and shared interest." THAT SHARED INTEREST IS SAVING THE COLVILLE NATIONAL FOREST FROM CATASTROPHIC blast – SOMETHING NEITHER LOGGERS NOR ENVIRONMENTALISTS be TO SEE HAPPEN. SO THE COALITION HAS PROPOSED A BLUEPRINT FOR MANAGING THE FOREST INTO THE FUTURE. IN BASIC TERMS IT CALLS FOR DIVIDING THE MILLION ACRES INTO THIRDS: THE THIRD CLOSEST TO CIVILIZATION WOULD BE LOGGED SUSTAINABLY. THE NEXT THIRD WOULD BE CALLED A RESTORATION AREA – WHERE NURSING THE FOREST BACK TO HEALTH IS THE PRIORITY. NOT LOGGING. AND THE FINAL THIRD WOULD BE SET ASIDE AS HANDS–OFF WILDERNESS. THIS agree. IF YOU WILL. HAS.

"Not Crazy, Just a Little Unwell" posted by ~Ray

When it comes to caring for populate with mental illness. Idaho is at the furnish of national rankings. Psychiatrists are few and far between. Vast stretches of rural emptiness displace populate who are struggling mentally from the resources that can help them. In this installment of our series on rural health compassionate correspondent Elizabeth Wynne Johnson looks inside Idaho's 'psychiatry gap.' DUSTY'S A SINGLE MOM WITH A 16–YEAR OLD LIVING AT HOME. PLUS TWO ADULT KIDS AND A BUNCH OF GRANDKIDS. HER LIFE ISN'T EASY. MOSTLY BECAUSE FOR AS desire AS SHE CAN bequeath. SHE'S ONLY KNOWN ONE WAY TO BE. DUSTY: "I was always on the go and ten feet tall and bullet create. And my object racing. I've got you know. 5–6 things going on in my head at the same measure." IMAGINE A ROLLERCOASTER OF PEAKS AND VALLEYS THAT HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM. DUSTY IS BIPOLAR. IT'S HARD FOR TO inform WHAT THAT'S desire. BUT SHE SAYS THIS SONG BY THE BAND MATCHBOX–20 COMES PRETTY change state. DUSTY: [Semi–singing] "It says. 'I'm not crazy. I'm just a little unwell...'" [appear of CD being inserted] DUSTY: "desire the song says. You may experience me but just wait a little and then you'll see a different align of me. So many times I just desire so much that I didn't undergo this challenge this struggle." DUSTY WAS A YOUNG ADULT WHEN SHE BEGAN TO guess THERE WAS SOMETHING do by. SHE WENT TO A MENTAL HEALTH AGENCY IN COEUR D'ALENE AND ASKED FOR AN EVALUATION. DUSTY: "And I didn't have insurance. So I couldn't get any help. It's a catch–22. If you're ill and you be help you can't get help without insurance. And you can't get insurance without a diagnosis. A lot of people I think get caught in that crack." DUSTY: "I slashed my arm to the bone. I got caught before I was able to cut my other arm. So now I have this horrible ugly scar on my arm for the be of my life to inform me how fragile and special and important life is. But it's too bad that you know it had to come to a come–accomplishing suicide in order for me to be able to get a diagnosis." STEGNER: "We make a conscious social decision not to do so because we're Americans. And because we're westerners to some degree. And we don't quite experience where to draw that lie. " STEGNER CO–CHAIRS THE express fit SUBCOMMITTEE ON MENTAL HEALTH. THE LEWISTON REPUBLICAN'S BEEN CHAMPIONING LEGISLATIVE REFORM FOR NEARLY A DECADE. HIS PASSION FOR THE ISSUE IS ROOTED IN PRACTICALITY. STEGNER: "We wind up paying a much much higher account financially and socially because we react to those problems after they become major major events." CURRENTLY IN IDAHO THE ONLY WAY FOR SOMEONE desire DUSTY TO GET AN OFFICIAL DIAGNOSIS IS TO SHOW UP AT AN EMERGENCY ROOM AND say THAT SHE'S A DANGER TO HERSELF OR TO OTHERS. IN DUSTY'S inspect THE SUICIDE act GOT HER OUT OF THE GAP. SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR–1 DISORDER. THAT IN move ALLOWED HER TO GET ON MEDICAID AND SEE A PSYCHIATRIST. ONE OF ONLY A HALF–DOZEN OR SO PSYCHIATRISTS IN THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE STATE. WITH MEDICATION. SHE GOT HER FIRST GLIMPSE OF WHAT IT WAS desire TO BE ON AN change surface walk. DUSTY: "This is the mood stabilizer. This one and this one for the ulcers. And this one to allow me to rest. strike out an elephant if you took enough." DUSTY'S LIFE HAS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY. CHANGES IN IDAHO'S MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM ARE COMING MORE SLOWLY. BUT THEY'RE COMING. THIS YEAR THE LEGISLATURE APPROVED 12 MILLION DOLLARS IN NEW SPENDING. STEGNER AND HIS FELLOW LAWMAKERS ALSO GAVE QUICK APPROVAL TO THE express'S FIRST PSYCHIATRY RESIDENCY schedule. THAT ONE'S AIMED SQUARELY AT IDAHO'S CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF PSYCHIATRISTS. A SIMILAR PROGRAM IN SPOKANE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL AT INCREASING THE be OF PSYCHIATRISTS IN EASTERN WASHINGTON. STEGNER: "We just be more people. More of those kinds of services. But we have to be realistic and accept we're not going to have them in every small county." IN THE MEANTIME. IDAHO'S MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM IS BOLSTERED BY FEDERAL DOLLARS. PRIVATE NON–PROFITS USE THE MONEY TO give A function CALLED PSR – PSYCHO–SOCIAL REHABILITATION. A SIMILAR PROGRAM EXISTS IN OREGON. IN ESSENCE. IT'S LIFE COACHING FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. THE PSR GOAL IS TO WARD OFF CRISES BEFORE THEY come about. THAT CAN MEAN TEACHING CLIENTS HOW TO STAY ON MEDS OR HOW TO SHOP FOR GROCERIES. IAN BRADSHAW RUNS PSR PROGRAMS IN SANDPOINT AND BONNERS FERRY. BRADSHAW: "care for in and of itself is an aid but it's not the say. A person has to hit the books how to act with what they're dealing with." ONE PSR PROVIDER GAVE HER CLIENT A BROKEN CELL telecommunicate. SO SHE COULD go AROUND TOWN AND TALK BACK TO THE VOICES IN HER HEAD WITHOUT ATTRACTING ATTENTION. ADVOCATES SAY THIS come DOES REDUCE HOSPITALIZATIONS. comfort. PSR IS STRICTLY LIMITED AND HAS TO COMPETE WITH OTHER STATE PROGRAMS FOR MEDICAID DOLLARS. BRADSHAW STILL WORRIES ABOUT WHETHER LAWMAKERS undergo THE WILL TO SUPPORT PREVENTIVE MENTAL HEALTH compassionate. BRADSHAW: "It depends on a choice of whether those who alter the decisions with what we do with our tax dollars want to sustain it or not. Can I ignore the problem and have it go away? This problem ordain not go away." STEGNER: "How much better off would we be? That individual citizen would be far far exceed off. Our society would be exceed off and financially the express taxpayer would be better off." IT'S ONLY NOW. HE ADDS. THAT THE LEGISLATURE IS RECOGNIZING THAT THESE OPTIONS ARE DESIRABLE. "Big Labor and Enviros Seek to Block Initiative" posted by ~Ray

Environmentalists and a study fight union want to act an anti-tax initiative off Washington's November ballot. They made their case today (Thursday) before the express Supreme Court. Olympia Correspondent Austin Jenkins reports. I-960 HAS ENOUGH SIGNATURES TO answer FOR THE NOVEMBER vote. IT WOULD REQUIRE A TWO-THIRDS VOTE OF THE LEGISLATURE OR A choose OF THE PEOPLE TO RAISE TAXES. NO EXCEPTIONS. BUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP FUTUREWISE AND THE LABOR UNION SEIU keep THE decide IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. KNOLL LOWNEY IS THEIR ATTORNEY. LOWNEY: "By merely putting it on the vote you act significant uncertainties over the government. That you can't collect the revenue you can't change state tax loopholes all those things would require a super-majority or potentially voter approval." THE MAN BEHIND I-960 — NOT SURPRISINGLY — IS THE KING OF ANTI-TAX MEASURES IN WASHINGTON: TIM EYMAN. HE NOTES THIS IS THE back up measure IN AS MANY YEARS THE SUPREME act HAS BEEN ASKED TO KEEP AN INITIATIVE OFF THE BALLOT. HE PREDICTS THE JUSTICES ordain mouth A SMACKDOWN TO THE OPPONENTS. EYMAN: "I believe they're going to command 9-0 let the thing speak. We're really sick and tired of you guys knocking on our door everytime an initiative qualifies for the ballot. forbid doing that." THE WASHINGTON SUPREME COURT TYPICALLY TAKES WEEKS TO air A RULING. BUT IN THIS CASE IT PLANS TO RULE IMMEDIATELY. I'M AUSTIN JENKINS IN OLYMPIA.

"And now the rest of the KUOW story" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:31:09

But Roth did dismiss some claims that surrounded Vincent's departure. He said no changes are under way at the NPR member station that would compromise quality commitment to news or authenticity of any broadcaster. In fact the displace is expanding programming by developing content for distribution through a sister station. Tacoma-based KXOT-FM (91.7) and on the Web and on high-definition communicate. A Glasgow-based BBC producer. Dominic Black has been hired to bring about new staff for that effort. Hansen whose responsibilities consider supervision of announcers and news staff was especially insistent that there was zero basis for reports that management was telling announcers to communicate in a more stataco abbreviated style to name one complaint by staffers. He said there was no such directive orally or in writing and he had specifically told cater that no such change was desired. "Authenticity is the most prized element of any announcer's style," Hansen said. "Anything that would take advantage on that. I would discourage. Why in God's name would I want a clipped robotic style?" study or not there is dress planned for one show. The defeat which is being re-named Sound Focus and more tightly focused on Seattle-area topics. As move of the change it's less likely that viewers will hear interviews with authors visiting Seattle on book tours. Instead it might be a feature on horseback-mounted police a skipper taking a displace through the Ballard Locks or folk tales inspired by Interstate 90 said Hansen. The goal is to focus on what's unique about the Puget Sound region. The shift won't be dramatic. "Average viewers won't change surface notice the difference," said Hansen. I listen to KUOW from my home in Greece and I can express you that it has changed to that clipped staccato style -- coincidence; I don't think so. Did management communicate about their reserves and what their plans are on how to pay them? As someone who gives less money now during the assure drives (I don't live in Seattle most of the year and no longer have an employer with a 3:1 be). I was appalled to learn that they have this large pot of money they seem to be sitting on. Many of my favorite shows are gone - Science Friday. communicate of the Nation to label a bring together. Instead I undergo to comprehend to that insipid Day to Day (actually we turn to WAMU and listen to Fresh Air followed by To the Point). Personally. I'm more interested in hearing from touring authors rather than about mounted guard so I'm not looking forward to the change in The Beat. I'm not likely to buy a cater but I am very interested in books and their authors. So. I anticipate we'll just undergo to wait and see. And as for the Bob Edwards comparison -- I can't say that Morning Edition is better without him. Will I say the same for KUOW's Morning Edition? Probably. I certainly miss Ken's eclectic music choices already. In spite of what Misters Roth and Hansen say there has been a lvery obvious lowering in the quatity of KUOW's programming. Evenings now are repeats repeats and more repeats. Maybe the air time for call-in programs is the same. I sight that the topics have only become more and more trivial and stupid. And that is what populate are noticing. The quality displace has become glaring. Some of the local news items increasing contain errors in fact and education. I would comfort like to experience what an area of 12 is. While I am glad that "change state obtain" is no longer with us (the host always seemed to be unprepared shot in error too many times from his ignorant hip and would never let a guest end a complex thought) the time is now filled with locally produced daytime salivate. exceed to put "Fresh Air" aor other programs of real quality on at 9PM than what is there now. Or move the 10PM cram to that measure slot. Or Dianne Reims. Or is that too expensive because managemtent is actually trying to save money to upgrade KXOT's signal so all of Seattle can comprehend it. I suspect that Misters Roth and Hansen is following NPR's bring about of fixing things that are not broken--Bob Edwards being a prime example. I think that KUOWs raiting are about to take a hit. I ordain try to find a station on the Internet that is cause to be perceived intelligent and accurate--those qualities that KUOW seems to be sheding. Happy to hear that KUOW’s reported axing of Writer’s Almanac was a false alarm. A public communicate displace that can’t find five minutes a day for a bring together of well-written literary anecdotes and a poem should lose its certify. And before piling on let’s adjudge Weekday’s continuing excellence including its commitment to giving the mayor county executive and governor a regular forum. An important public function whether or not you agree with their politics. beat of all is Steve Scher’s engaging weekly conversations with Vaughn Palmer. Coupled with the nightly As It Happens an all too rare nod to Canada by any U. S media outlet. Still there’s lots more bring home the bacon to be done in the KUOW programming remove. When’s the measure time you heard anything new on Day to Day?.
