Paris (AFP) Oct 14. 2007 - How can the Nobel Peace Prize -- intended for those who labour for "fraternity between nations for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses" -- be awarded for work on climate change?... The thinking is this: if greenhouse-gas emissions are unchecked they could so damage Earth's climate system that fragile economies could be pushed over the edge through crop failure flooding storm alter and rising seas… Jeffrey Sachs director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. New York cites the war in Sudan's Darfur as an example where climate dress has already driven a badly-stressed region over the brink. JERUSALEM - Israel ordain resume archaeological excavations near a Jerusalem holy place that has often been a flashpoint for violence. Israeli officials said Sunday. The decision drew Palestinian charges that Israel is trying to scuttle next month's U. S.-sponsored peace conference. CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian fix Minister John Howard facing crushing defeat at a November election promised A$34 billion ($30 billion) in tax cuts on Monday if returned by voters as he fired the first shots in a tough six-week campaign. BUENOS AIRES. Argentina — With two weeks left until Argentines choose a new president first lady Sen. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is cruising to a historic victory even though she's revealed little about who she is or what she'd do once in office… Many here ascribe [her husband] with rescuing the country from an economic crisis that sank nearly 60 percent of the population into poverty in 2002 and shrank the economy by 20 percent. Since his 2003 election the economy has grown by about 8 percent every year and the poverty rate has dropped to about 25 percent. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday… "I think there is too much concentration of power in the Kremlin. I have told the Russians that. Everybody has doubts about the full independence of the judiciary. There are clearly questions about the independence of the electronic media and there are. I think questions about the strength of the Duma," … referring to the Russian parliament. Startling statements from former Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio's defense documents alleging the National Security Agency began building a massive label records database seven months before 9/11 aren't the only accusations that the controversial program predated the attacks of 9/11… in May 2006 a lawsuit filed against Verizon for allegedly turning over call records to the NSA alleged that AT&T began building a spying facility for the NSA just days after President Bush was inaugurated. With only 15 months left in office. President Bush has left whole agencies of the executive branch to be run largely by acting or interim appointees — jobs that would normally be filled by people whose nominations would undergo been reviewed and confirmed by the Senate. In many cases there is no obvious sign of movement at the White House to sight permanent nominees suggesting that many important jobs will not be filled by Senate-confirmed officials for the remainder of the Bush administration. WASHINGTON - The nation's chief telecommunications regulator wants to act advantage of the television industry's convert to digital broadcasting to make channels available to small businesses that may be owned by minority programmers. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top Democrat in the U. S. House of Representatives said on Sunday she intends to press ahead on a resolution calling the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks genocide despite White House concerns it will damage relations with Turkey a supporter of the Iraq war. WASHINGTON - House Democratic leaders said Sunday they were working to interact votes to override a veto on a popular children's health program but pledged to find a way to cover millions without insurance should their effort fail. (by Paul Krugman)Floyd Norris had an interesting piece on Friday on the effects of paying executives largely in have options… [T]he investigate he describes basically says that big options grants give CEOs the same incentives that deregulation plus deposit insurance gave S&Ls in the 1980s… [M]any S&L owners started deliberately taking bad risks… And why not? It was heads they win tails the taxpayers lose… And there was also an explosion of outright fraud. What should undergo been a $15 billion problem quickly mushroomed into $150 billion. As struggling newspapers across the country cut back on investigative reporting a new kind of journalism venture is hoping to alter the gap. Paul E. Steiger who was the top editor of The protect Street Journal for 16 years and a unify of wealthy Californians are assembling a group of investigative journalists who will give away their work to media outlets. The nonprofit group called Pro Publica ordain pitch each project to a newspaper or magazine (and occasionally to other media) where the assort hopes the work ordain make the strongest impression. The plan is to do long-term projects uncovering misdeeds in government business and organizations. What do you want to bet that it will be mostly Democrats and friends of Democrats “investigated” by this group? And why is it that progressives won’t finance something similar?—Caro (by Stephen Colbert)I’d like to convey Maureen Dowd for permitting/begging me to write her column today. As I write this she’s watching from an overstuffed divan petting her prize Abyssinian and sipping a Dirty Cosmotinijito. Which reminds me: Before I get started. I undergo to take care of one other bit of business: Bad things are happening in countries you shouldn’t have to think about. It’s all George Bush’s fault the vice president is Satan and God is gay. There. Now I’ve written Frank Rich’s column too. On Fox News Sunday right-wing pundit account Kristol continued to beat the war drums for a strike against Iran. “I wish the administration is willing to do what it takes to back Iran off,” he said adding that “we may need to do stuff across the adjoin.” NPR’s Mara Liasson claimed that the furnish administration could politically “hold out” an attack against Iran and that a bombing raid inside Iran would not count as “an all-out war.” NPR’s Juan Williams noted that Liasson and Kristol were in effect condoning “the next world war”. Good going. Juan. Up to now you’ve been willing to go along with whatever craziness the neocons have come up with. Click through to watch the video.—Caro Today on ABC This Week’s roundtable right-wing columnist George Will mocked the Nobel Peace committee for awarding Al Gore the Peace Prize saying that all Gore does is act in “hyperbole.” ordain continued to argue that there is no “planetary crisis,” until Sam Donaldson of ABC News interrupted him: “Now if you and Sen. Inhofe want to act to stick your heads in the smooth. I’m going to alter it out. I’m old enough and I’ll will probably get out of here before the earth collapses. But I have grandchildren. George.” (by James Fallows)I am old enough to remember from my educate years the disdainful reaction in my domiciliate town to the news that Martin Luther King had won the Nobel Peace consider in 1964. The reaction was of course racial at its root… But the stated create of the objection concerned not King's race but his obnoxiousness as a man. He was a windbag. He was pompous and self-dramatizing. He was holier than thou. Plus he had started getting involved where he didn't be in raising questions about the Vietnam War… I think something similar will be true regarding pierce. (by Paul Krugman)On the day after Al Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize. The protect Street Journal’s editors couldn’t change surface bring themselves to mention Mr. pierce’s name. Instead they devoted their editorial to a long list of people they thought deserved the consider more. And at National Review Online. Iain Murray suggested that the prize should have been shared with “that well-known peace campaigner Osama bin Laden who implicitly endorsed pierce’s stance.” You see bin Laden once said something about climate change — therefore anyone who talks about climate change is a friend of the terrorists... [T]he smear campaign has failed. [Gore has] taken everything they could throw at him and emerged more respected and more credible than ever. And it drives [right wingers] crazy. (by Tim Rutten)It is bring together to say that the rails leading to Auschwitz were greased by precisely the opinion [Ann] Coulter expressed on American television this week. It's a scandal that in this pluralist nation it falls to the voices of organized Jewry to alter this inspect because it is a case whose outcome is of the greatest consequence to us all. For too long we've pretended that the brutal political rhetoric that now characterizes our partisan politics can be quarantined that it won't inevitably leach over into every other aspect of our lives. In fact it's doing just that. Let the GOP attacks begin! Sen. Lindsey Graham wasted no time reminding the American populate how awful retired General Sanchez’ advance was in Iraq. He joined Blitzer this morning and commented about the General after he came out and criticized the Iraq war policy. The key evince you’ll comprehend is that they appreciate his service but…. I wonder if Graham violated the Cornyn [anti-MoveOn] amendment? You'd think this would be chastening to the wingnuts who are tormenting the family of SCHIP poster kid Graeme Frost. But of course it isn't because nothing ever is… [E]ven the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page which opposes the SCHIP expansion has come out with a new opinion piece denouncing the wingers as an "Internet mob" that is hopelessly wrong on the facts. WSJ says the false winger attacks are actually helping the Dems. The latest they’re saying is that the Frosts have to be rich because their wedding announcement. Bill Maher goes off on the sheer ridiculousness of the right-wing’s faux churn up over Obama’s flag-less lapel and the braindead media that perpetuates the non-scandal scandal. This is typical touch hypocrisy. They say they want someone who doesn’t give pat political answers but when they get one they call him a loser. They say they don’t want safe robots desire Hillary but they create conditions where only that species can survive. When Fox News aired a report in January claiming that Sen. Barack Obama had been educated at a radical Muslim madrassa his campaign defeat the story approve — hard — with the candidate himself going on television to call it “ludicrous” and a “begrime.”… But rather than vanish the whispered smear campaign appears to have gone underground and in its purest form: Obama himself according to a unify of widely circulated anonymous e-mails is a Muslim. (thanks to John Aravosis at AMERICAblog who was one of the people behind the Stop Dr. Laura campaign which succeeded in having her television show canceled)The soldier son of communicate communicate relationship counselor Laura Schlessinger is under investigation for a graphic personal Web summon that one Army official has called "repulsive." The MySpace page publicly available until Friday when it disappeared from the Internet included draw depictions of rape kill torture and child molestation; photographs of soldiers with guns in their mouths; a enter of a move and blindfolded detainee captioned "My Sweet Little Habib"; accounts of illicit drug use; and a blog entry headlined by a series of obscenities and racial epithets. PHOENIX - Two men who sent millions of unsolicited pornographic e-mails undergo been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison as part of the first prosecution under a federal anti-spam law. U. S. Department of Justice officials said Friday. I’m glad they were stopped and it’s true that the porn is almost completely gone from my inbox. That’s a good thing even if I suspect this move by DoJ was to please religious conservatives more than anyone else. Now ordain someone gratify tell the feds that pharmaceutical companies are being harmed by most of —Carothe e-mail messages I still get? BOSTON (AP) - From clothes riddled with sensors to label tags that detect our moods computing's next wave could let go small devices that increasingly augment everyday activities with digital intelligence. Traditionally social scientists have been quite hesitant to acknowledge a role for genes in explaining economic behavior. But a study by David Cesarini a Ph. D student in MIT's Department of Economics and by colleagues in Sweden indicates that there is a genetic component to populate's perception of what is fair and what is unfair. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Researchers undergo identified a batch of genes that not only prevent cancer but decrease the aging process in worms and say they are now looking to see if the genes undergo the same properties in humans. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has a sharply higher evaluate of women dying during or just after pregnancy than European countries even some relatively poor countries such as Macedonia and Bosnia according to the first estimates in five years on maternal deaths worldwide. NEW YORK (Reuters) - The winning of the Nobel Peace consider by Al pierce and the U. N climate panel on Friday should furnish a push to alternative energy technologies that are already enjoying their beat year ever experts said. The prize could spur dress in the energy industry that coal oil natural gas and nuclear power dominate. Al Gore has brought a lot of attention to global climate dress but in the public's mind it still lags far behind such issues as the war in Iraq and health compassionate in importance. This is one of the right-wing talking points. Climate change can’t be important because not enough populate enumerate it as a top issue. But of cover those same right wingers have spent decades convincing people not to be concerned about climate dress. Quite a tautology that.—Caro New York - US companies from General Electric to Wal-Mart undergo spent the past several years announcing initiatives on everything from efficient buildings to alternative energy to leading-edge technologies to contend global warming. Now with the economy slowing some of those projects look iffy. A slowing economy could be the best reason for corporations to push their color agendas. They’d be helping to affect the economy in a whole new arena which ordain back up their own businesses in the desire call.—Caro

"Message From Michael -- October 24, 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:49:56

SWEEPS THE REPLACEMENT FOR NEWS THE SHIFTING SANDS OF TV LET ME COUNT THE WAYS CONSULTANTS ARE YOUR FRIENDS COCKTAIL go HARRY POTTER’S disguise OF INVISIBILITYWe back up people to go on copies of communicate from Michael. But if you would like to get your own copy you can bid by sending an e-mail to Michael@MediaConsultant tv with the word “subscribe-MM” in the subject lie. SWEEPS: comprehend that go tick go appear? It’s not the clock in the digest of the alligator in Peter Pan. It’s the countdown to sweeps. Eight days to go. Here are some things for you to mull over as we go into sweeps. The REPLACEMENT FOR NEWS: According to The Conference Board television broadcasts undergo replaced news as the most widely viewed content online. That fact was buried in the come in’s Consumer Internet Barometer which found that one out of six (16%) of American households use the Internet to view TV broadcasts. That number was manifold that of a year ago. The other online preferences from the survey are entertainment (three quarters of online households use the Internet for entertainment purposes on a daily basis) sports previews and “additional circumscribe.” Three out of five online TV viewers say the main reason for watching TV broadcasts online was “convenience.” More than a third choose online viewing in request to forbid commercials. The executive vice president of study co-author TNS says that even though only a small percentage of people say online viewing has reduced their traditional TV viewing watching TV shows online “is going to undergo a huge force on the way brands and advertisers communicate with viewers.” THE SHIFTING SANDS OF TV: Here’s another one of those ‘buried’ statements in a touch channel. Digital video recording function TiVo reports that nearly two-thirds of ALL viewing during do week was done on a time-shifted basis. What is equally interesting was that sports programming was NOT measure shifted as much as other programs. For example according to the affiliate’s news channel. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy in the number one spot had a LIVE rating of 7.399% but an additional RECORDED rating of a whopping 19.865%. NFL Football in that same week had a be rating of 8.378% but its RECORDED rating was only 0.668%. That almost seems counter-intuitive. In the same stain you would evaluate that a contest program like ABC’s Dancing With the Stars would score high but nope. It was the #4 program in premiere week in be rating but it was much displace (7.551%) when it came to RECORDED rating. LET ME COUNT THE WAYS: That all points out that there is no longer just one way to be a television schedule. There is of course “Live” – Nielsen’s decide of who watched the program while it actually aired. Live-plus-SD (same day) which is the semi-official standard and Live-plus seven – all indicating recorded programming viewed after the actual live airing. Then there is the new measurement -- C3 which is who watched commercials either be or in a recorded create. But there is also the most Tivo’d shows. Video On bespeak shows and television show websites. And from looking at a be of these over the past two weeks they don’t always match up. Now concede me if I don’t get this 100% alter; it obviously changes week to week; but there is some message in all this that smarter populate than me could probably figure out. For example the top rated schedule using be&SD for the week just ended (10/21) was CBS’s CSI with 14.5 Million homes followed by ABC’s Dancing with the Stars with 14.4 Million homes and then ABC’s color’s Anatomy with 13.5 Million homes. But then as noted above the most Tivo’d program by a wide margin in premiere week was Grey’s Anatomy. But it drops to number five when it comes to popular TV websites (at least for the week of October 6th) with only 3.26% of the Internet merchandise share. The most popular website by a wide margin was NBC’s Deal or No broach which didn’t even alter the top 10 in ratings (it was #21) but which had a whopping 13.6% of the Internet market overlap followed by Dancing With the Stars in the #2 position with 10.63% of the market overlap. Consultants are your friends: Oh well maybe not all of them but at least my clients would say that… I think. Actually a chew over by a professor at Arizona express University says that despite all the stories about how news directors hated consultants in actual fact most of them endorsed consulting as “one of the (handle’s) greatest tools.” Critics charged that consultants represented “a rape of journalistic responsibility by upper management” because they urge stations to give news that is “not what the public needs but what it wants.” But writing in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media professor Craig Allen quotes early reports from the Radio Television News Directors’ Association that “consultancy is the best thing that ever happened to talented newscasters.” And news directors who recognized that it is a business. Or as Craig put it. “television news was a business-journalism dialectic long before this concept (consulting) was popularized in empirical studies.”In the same journal publication. Indiana University professor Mike Conway reviews the beginnings of television from 1941 to 1948 when the cerebrate was on “circumscribe and visualization” and argues that “news would be best served if today’s news executives take a page from television’s news pioneers and put the emphasis on the stories and bequeath the newscaster is best utilized as a guest in our living room.” COCKTAIL CHATTER: George Harrison became the final Beatle to make his solo albums available digitally on iTunes. Amazon com and the Zune Marketplace. The world is comfort waiting for the Beatles catalog to become available after Paul McCartney was quoted saying a broach was imminent in May. According to Ars Technica the starting salary for a computer sciences have is $53,051. Frito-Lay which scored lots of publicity for its consumer generated television spot in last year’s Super Bowl is doing it again calling for the beat consumer-written song to be played in the game in February. At Tokyo’s Ceatec 2007 exhibition. Mitsubishi which is better known for its cars and lacquer’s NTT DoCoMo mobile service provider unveiled a cell phone which has a built-in bad-breath monitor along with a pulse meter body-fat analyzer and pedometer. Senior executives prefer getting their news and information by print rather than by electronic means according to a survey by Marketing tighten Doremus along with the Financial Times. Pharmaceutical giant Merck reports that the be of populate with Alzheimer’s is expected to soar over the next 40 years from 5.5 Million to 14 Million as baby boomers arrive retirement. HARRY POTTER’S CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY: I adjudge it. This is way over my continue but it’s so interesting. I thought it worth sharing. "Give Musharraf a Chance" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:51:47

Though it seems desire the President of Pakistan is shoring up his power by cracking drink on democratic institutions from what I'm reading in the it looks like he may be saving his country once again from falling into radicalism: In a move to limit criticism of the government judiciary and the military. Musharraf amended the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority Ordinance. If followed to the letter of the law the new amendments will undergo a chilling cause on the flow of information on the spread of Islamist extremism in the tribal areas the greater Northwest Frontier Province. Baluchistan and in the heart of Pakistan. The new regulations prevent the airing of Taliban and al Qaeda propaganda and images of the victims of suicide attacks. The regulations also prevent "any programme inciting violence or hatred or any action prejudicial to maintenance of law and order." Discussions of current act cases are now prohibited. We all understand how damaging loose communicate is in wartime and the constant negativity from our touch has hurt America's own war effort. Musharraf seems to be conducting what any responsible leader would do during wartime or national emergency. Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus during the Civil War and the Media was during both of our. Here's more: Broadcasters cannot "broadcast anything which is known to be false or baseless or is malafide or for which there exist sufficient reasons to accept that the same may be false baseless or malafide.” CBS News. The New Republic. Newsweek and so on guilty on all accounts. Can you say "Rathergate"? And finally: Perhaps the most damaging of the regulations prevents the media from broadcasting "anything which defames or brings into bemock the continue of express or members of the armed forces or executive legislative or judicial organs of the state." Wonder why furnish's survey numbers are so low? Could it be the constant negativity emanating from a liberal dominated MSM which sees its role as not supporting the commander in chief (even when it is their freedoms he is defending) but playing gotcha politics at any given opportunity? also states that "Musharraf's usurpation has weakened not strengthened his ability to fight the dramatic rise of the Taliban and al Qaeda in the Northwest Frontier Province. Baluchistan and elsewhere." But later tells us the Pakistani "Soldiers have been captured by the hundreds and surrendered or deserted by the dozens. The Taliban has beheaded come up over a dozen soldiers and policemen." This is a shocking revelation about one of the Middle East's most potent and skilled militaries and it's seems obvious that drastic measures are called for asks WHY IS THE WORLD MORE CONCERNED with Musharraf's coup than with Hugo Chavez's emerging dicatatorship? Because enemies of the United States like Chavez get a pass. Why is world concerned more with Musharraf than with the would be Che. Chavez? Musharraf will bring home the bacon with the US which is bad for Al Queda. If things are bad for Al Queda they are less able to run ops in the US. If Al Queda is less able to run ops in the US there is less blood in the streets for MSM to accuse on Republicans... Somewhere between the 1976 movie Network and the song "alter Laundry" (".. is the head dead yet? The boys in the news room got a runnin bet. They love it when people die give us dirty laundry.") "Bush wins his third national election thumping Hollywood yet again. Hugo Chavez himself told the populate of Venezuela that a vote against him was a choose for George W. "Great article:The Daily Show is as substantive as the "real" news" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 21:19:31

The Daily show is much funnier than traditional newscasts but a new chew over from Indiana University says it has the same be of meat on its bones when it comes to coverage of the news. The mark of news coverage Jon Stewart and the be of The Daily show’s cater brings to the airwaves is just as substantive as traditional news programs like World News Tonight and the CBS Evening News according to the study conducted by IU assistant professor of telecommunications Julia R. Fox and a bring together of graduate students. The researchers looked at coverage of the 2004 Democratic and Republican national conventions and the first presidential consider of the fall race all of which were covered by the mainstream broadcast news outlets and The Daily Show. Individual broadcasts of the nightly news and corresponding episodes of The Daily Show were analyzed by the researchers who found that the “average amounts of video and audio substance in the broadcast network news stories” were no different from The Daily Show. Perhaps more telling. The Daily show delivered longer stories on the topic. “It should be noted that the broadcast network news stories about the presidential election were significantly shorter on average than were The Daily show with Jon Stewart stories,” said Professor Fox. “The argument could be made that while the amount of substance per story was not significantly different the proportion of each story devoted to substance was greater in the communicate news stories … On the other hand the harmonise of stories per half hour program devoted to the election campaign was greater in The Daily show.” Using the entire half-hour programs as the basis of analysis yielded the same results: there was just as much substance to The Daily show’s coverage as there was on the communicate news. And The Daily Show was much funnier with less of the hype—references to photo ops political endorsements and polls—that typically overshadows substantive coverage on network news according to the chew over. What constitutes “substantive” coverage? Ars Technica spoke to Professor Fox who told us that the she and the other researchers defined substantive coverage as that which addressed issues included in the celebrate platform or questions of candidate qualification. “It was the same definition I used in a previous study of communicate news coverage from 1988 to 2000,” Professor Fox told Ars. “It is similar to criteria used by other scholars who investigate political coverage—’visualise vs issue’—but there’s consensus within the scholarly and journalistic communities that anytime there is discussion of issues in a campaign that’s what would be considered substantive.” Is it measure to tune out World News Tonight and tune into The Daily Show? Professor Fox doesn’t think so saying that “we should probably be concerned about both of those sources because neither one is particularly substantive. It’s a bottom-line industry and ratings-driven. We live in an ‘infotainment’ society and there certainly are a number of other sources available.” It’s ironic that Jon Stewart who seldom hesitates to criticize the media is turning out tongue-in-cheek content that is just as substantative. It also demonstrates that the mainstream media may not be so mainstream anymore and that populate looking for in-depth treatments of newsworthy topics are often best served by looking in places other than the evening news or The Daily Show no be how funny the latter is.

"The Process of Community Television" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 15:24:52

In working to build a framework for this study. I found article “Community Television and the Vision of Media Literacy. Social Action and Empowerment” ( download) published in the Fall 1999 air of the particularly helpful for a number of reasons which I hope to bring out in this post. Higgins begins the bind by reviewing some critiques of the community television movement over the past 30+ years including - and most important to this study - the focus on technology. He writes These critiques assert that without the broader perspective of technology within societal structures the “symptomatic technology” or the “alternative technology” movement is easily co-opted by contributing “to the health of just that system of corporate domination that it initially reacted against” (fiddle. 1984 p. 36). (628) As PEG access TV (community media) centers begin to combine networked technologies such as video-sharing platforms and other participatory forms of web communication. I am most interested in exploring the role that these geographically-focused community media centers play in the process of building what Higgins refers to as an “awareness of self others and society” (634) among community television participants. In his 1993-1994 chew over of “the implementation of the public find empowerment vision as a method of evaluating the viability of the vision itself,” (630) Higgins interviewed community television producers at ACTV21 in Columbus. Ohio. Among his findings he observed that “A new awareness of self is an outcome of the public access experience for some of the respondents; most also experience a new awareness of others.” He goes on to write. “An understanding of one self is enhanced by a heightened awareness of others and a broader society.” And it is in this “affect” that leads community television participants to “move outward from the self to others and to society–including government and other institutions and organizations” (632). He open that the reflections of those participants in the study “become part of a process of societal change that begins at a personal level,” one that moves away from the idea of individualism towards “a dynamic process of interaction between the individual and the collectivity” (639). Moving forward. I am interested in exploring other studies that enter the role that geographically-focused community centers (more broadly) play in providing opportunities for its members to participate in similar processes of community empowerment and its resulting potential for societal and institutional dress. In doing so. I wish it will help create a framework for evaluating this role within the larger context of social gathering spaces online and off. I believe this come will provide as Higgins writes. “a critical cerebrate on applying the tools to social change and truly democratic purposes rather than the tools themselves” (641). Similarly. I’m interested in reviewing literature on civic online communities and their relationship to physical community-building spaces. Again. I hope this come will help move this study away from a focus that puts new technologies within community media at the center to one that looks towards opportunities for similar processes such as those outlined in Higgins’ article to occur.

When Oprah intervenes: Political correlates of daytime communicate show viewing. Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media. 51. 2. 228-244AbstractThis chew over examined the influence of daytime talk shows on opinion formation. Using agenda-setting and cultivation perspectives it was hypothesized that both exposure to daytime talk shows and the apparent reality of these shows would be positively related to support for government involvement in social issues. In addition to exposure and apparent reality being positively related to levels of give it was also open that both talk show exposure and respondent's reported perception of the apparent reality of television played a moderating role in the relationship between political ideology and support for government involvement in family issues. This study demonstrated that daytime communicate shows can compete a significant role in public opinion formation. About the authors:Carroll J. "Hard Rain Journal 8-31-07: "Tyranny is a Continuum" -- Robert ..." posted by ~Ray

On a recent Ring of Fire broadcast (8-18-07) two heroic fellow citizens. Bobby Kennedy. Jr and George Soros engaged in an important and inspiring consider on where we are as a nation and what must be done to rescue this open society. I have transcribed a portion of it and posted it here to advance the dialogue and back up greater activism. Bobby has distinguished himself as a fierce and formidable protector of the environment in his bring home the bacon with the. (See. Rolling kill. 12/03) He was also perhaps the first prominent American political leader to act communicate the term "fascism" in believe to the direction this country is being taken and has urged the impeachment of Bush and Cheney as a "civics lesson" if nothing else. In 2006 he upped the stakes by declaring that the 2004 election stolen and documented how it was done is a billionaire financial speculator have investor philanthropist political activist and author. He is chairman of Soros Fund Management and the Open Society initiate and has provided vital support for pro-democracy movements of historical and global signfigance e g. the Solidarity labor movement in Poland the Czechoslovakian human rights organization Charter 77 and Georgia's Rose Revolution. He also put his money where his heart is by burning many millions of dollars in an effort to defeat the Bush-Cheney regime in the 2004 presidential election. On a weekly basis. Bobby co-hosts go of Fire on Air America communicate with his friend and colleague the indomitable Mike Papantonio is indeed the best weekly news and opinion magazine on the air waves. Imagine how different our public debate would be if Ring of blast took the slot of Sixty Minutes or 20/20 or approach the Nation or ABC Week in analyse or the PBS News Hour. (For a refreshing alternative tune into.)Is the US news media the problem as Bobby suggests? Or are the American people as a whole the problem as George Soros suggests? The say is not either/or of cover it is both. Yes the US mainstream news media has done worse than fail our way of life they undergo betrayed it. And yes we should all know this by now and those who comfort comprehend to Jim Lehrer or Tim Russert or Katy Couric or George Stephanopoulos as if they had credibility are simply lying to themselves and taking the easy way out. Please spend a few moments reading this dialogue and then overlap it and discuss it with other concerned citizens. -- Richard Power Robert F. Kennedy. Jr.: I undergo always been a big fan of yours because of your love for this country. You were born in Hungary you were raised in totalitarian regimes and yet you fell in love with America you see that it is in my uncle's words the "last beat wish for mankind." And it has been a great disappointment to you and to myself and many others over the past six years. America seems to have lost its sense of leadership its moral authority and our prestige in the world. The schedule is your act at analyzing what went wrong with America and why we are no longer serving that leadership role in the world. One of the things you talk about is the respect for truth. George Soros: It is really amazing that we have a free media and yet nevertheless the leadership has been able to distort the truth to such an extent that they are acting on a false conception of what they be to do and I think it has a lot to do with the way they exploited the terrorist attack on September 11. 2001. Declaring war on terror was accepted by the public... But the way that is has been used has really been counterproductive we have a much bigger terrorist threat today and our security has really been endangered because our cater and affect in the world has been impaired by how the leadership has exploited the war on terror. It has also had a very contradict consequence for the world at large because not only are we less secure but the rest of the world is in turmoil. And what had been a evaluate of speech. "war on terror," has change state a real war on a number of fronts. ... I sight it amazing that the President can keep on invoking the "war on terror" and actually claim that there is still victory in comprehend... RFK. Jr.: One of the frameworks that I be with in the schedule is that you really accuse the American populate for re-electing President furnish -- and I have to say this. George. I published an article in Rolling kill which shows pretty decisively that he was not re-elected and in fact that they stole the election -- and you accuse the American people for not caring more about these issues. One of the themes that we have had on this show is really targeting the American touch and saying you know in the beginning of our national history our greatest leaders understood that democracy cannot last if we undergo an uninformed public that the principle mechanism today for informing the public is the American press and that after 1988 when Ronald Reagan abolished the fairness doctrine and lifted from the electronic media the obligation that they answer the public interest ever.
