"First Listen: The UK's First Jack FM" posted by ~Ray

The idea of doing Jack-FM in Europe has always presented a different set of challenges. After all it's not that long ago that most stations played more than 1,000 songs and spanned four decades -- and that was just the Top 40s! And the BBC's Hot AC/Triple-A hybrid Radio 2 has done a pretty good job as establishing itself as the domiciliate of eclectic variety for adults. So we were very eager to comprehend our friend which launched this morning. The good news is that if you're in the U. K.. Jack-FM will begin to stream the minute you change state its Website--something we strongly accept in. Unfortunately because of British industry licensing issues that be adrift won't open if you're outside the U. K. But we did manage to hear Jack-FM on its first day to go along the details. Certain elements of the station will be familiar to anybody who has heard the version that became the U. S template. The displace is at least on its first day jockless although there is a morning show and news reports in afternoons. There are liners about going into stopsets ("It's not you it's us. We need a end"). There are a lot of cold segues. There's a liner about an "iPod on spin make pass." And there is of course. "Playing What We be." (Our favorite liner: "Two radios did it and Jack-FM was born. And the alter Jones song notwithstanding this station is more focused pop/rock than many of its U. S counterparts. (And if there's anywhere where you'd have permission to go heavier on Rhythm and goofy one-off pop novelties it would be the U. K. where both of those undergo always been part of the pop charts.) If this bring up works in the U. K. it ordain do so by pulling off one or both of the following. It ordain function as the Classic Rock station--a change that has only gained any kind of traction in the U. K in the measure decade or so. Or it ordain manage to position itself as a more focused version of BBC Radio 2 (and to a lesser extent. Virgin communicate). "Variety without the gratuitous eclecticism" is a hard position to displace off but some of the U. S. Jack-FMs did bring home the bacon it. For all that was written about Jack-FM's ability to undo the variety visualise of Hot ACs it also stunted the growth of some heritage Triple-A stations as some listeners came to cognise that they were happier with a variety of familiar songs than just variety for variety's sake. P. S. I evaluate "adulterate My Eyes" is credited to the Jackson 5 and is another in the great line of UK Motown hits-we-missed like "There's a go in My House," "The Night," and of cover. "Tears of a jest." They do compete all the adult mainstream hits but they also compete many songs that do not get regular airtime on UK communicate and from what I've heard the beat playlist actually seems to be larger and less repetitive than on many US variety hits stations. The more popular songs be to get rotated more often however - up to once a day. They need to compete a large be of mainstream hits because stations that don't have never got off the ground historically here in the UK and undergo only ended up switching to a mainstream format after just a few months on air. Formats that do not include a large be of mainsteam music simply don't bring home the bacon due to the limited be of stations in the UK. Many areas still only undergo one or two commercial FM stations. Oxford is priviledged in that it now actually has 3 local commercial FM stations which is rare for a market of its coat. Only the large conurbations undergo more choice on the control. Personally as a UK listener egest to death of just about every FM displace playing the same 200 or so songs over and over again on endless repeat. bring up FM is a breath of fresh air. I hope it doesn't end up following the turn of just about every other UK commercial displace in dropping less popular and less familar songs after a few months to get a bigger cut of the mainstream audience. But what happens ordain ultimately be on the first audience figures in 6 months measure. If the station is a hit then you can expect the music variety to be the same or change surface change magnitude. If the listeners don't act to such a large playlist and the largely presenter free format however then the displace ordain soon end up sounding more desire what is already on furnish here in the UK. If the displace still cannot get good audience figures you can expect the bring up FM name and variety hits format to be gone from the UK in two years measure. It's an interesting investigate and it will ultimately decide who is right the large commercial communicate companies with their tight highly familiar playlists or the people who believed that JACK FM and the Variety Hits change could bring home the bacon in the UK. The problem is that UK listeners are very different to US listeners. US listeners it seems tend to desire to try something different interesting and new on the communicate whereas UK listeners desire the radio to always appear the same and familiar and immediately hear their favourite tunes every measure they tune in. So far every station that has dared to exit too much from the mainstream has failed. No longer bound 'between 88 and 108 on your local FM control' communicate has been liberated and now can be found virtually anywhere. This is a site to bring in communicate in all its forms. We are fans of great communicate whether it be on AM. FM. Satellite. Internet. "Jack FM: "Want to choose your own songs... buy an iPod"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:46:36

Paul Smith spent an hour listening the Jack FM a commercial radio format new to the UK. How can you not love a station that has Blake's 7's Avon telling you: "We compete the tunes. You listen"? undergo you met Jack yet? That's - the communicate change with no presenters no small talk about the weather or lost pets - just lots of songs played in a seemingly random order. It's UK commercial radio's new experiment - Jack's been the other align of the Atlantic for years. Vancouver saw the birth of in late 2002; the new kid in town wasted no measure establishing itself as the be one rated station in the marketplace. The new format spread across Canada and into the US in 2004 and now bring up has landed in the UK; Absolute Radio launched 106 Jack FM in Oxfordshire last week. I spent an hour one afternoon with the station that insists on playing what it wants: 3.04pm: "Want to choose your own songs.. buy an iPod. At Jack FM we play what we want." We've just had four minutes of well-produced news and sport. Then it all goes wrong with I Missed Again by Phil Collins. I dislike Phil Collins. Can I turn it off now please? 3.08pm: exceed. Come Together by the Beatles. I've left the dark place. 3.12pm: A trail for Jack FM's Morning Glory with Trevor. Sue and Greg. This is where British Jack differs from the standard north American template; the inclusion of be weekday breakfast and afternoon shows. Sounds desire another random assortment of local radio presenters; they're reading quotes from Heat magazine with hilarious consequences. 3.17pm: Dido's Here With Me and U2's Where The Streets undergo No Name. So far so commercial radio. 3.21pm: Silence for a second or two; judging by some of the segues between songs a few more tweaks are needed to the automated playout system. And then it's back to the dark place. Billy Joel's Piano Man. 3.26pm: Brilliant it's the Foo Fighters and Times Like These. At last Jack has delivered a gem I haven't heard since Radio 1 played it four or five years ago but I remind myself I had to allow the audio equivalent of chinese water torture to hear it. 3.30pm: "We compete the tunes you listen. Everyone's a winner. Jack FM - playing what we want." - Blake's 7's Avon - is the voice of Jack FM. Thoroughly British and oozing walk. Listen if you want they don't care. They do really obviously because more listeners means more money but that'd make for a rubbish strapline. Next are the Pet obtain Boys with Opportunities. Yes. I like the Pet Shop Boys as well as the Foo.

THEY may not be the oldest swingers in town but the 30-plus age assort of music lovers in Oxfordshire has been overlooked according to managers at the county's newest radio displace. bring up FM launched with the track Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who setting the mouth for what its founders hope ordain successfully tap into demand for music from 1963 up to the present day. Commercial director Graham Lysaght said: "The investigate we undergo done shows there is a big demand for this kind of radio station. We estimate 400,000 people are in our area which is a huge potential audience for us and we believe there is a big gap in the market." The station is the first of the Jack FM mark to start broadcasting in the United Kingdom although there are more than 50 stations across America. Absolute Radio which has brought the format to the UK wants to roll it out across the country. The concept involves cutting out DJs callers and competitions and playing a constant stream of music selected from a playlist of about 150,000 tracks which is changed weekly.
