Independent candidate for Fraser. Samuel Gordon-Stewart has welcomed the news that 666 ABC Canberra has launched a webstream. “Canberra is blessed with two locally focussed talk radio stations and I am very pleased to see that one of them has put Canberra on the Internet in this way.” Mr. Gordon-Stewart said. “People are turning to the Internet for information more regularly these days. Talk radio is one of the few places where people can easily express and consider their views and it is good to see that talk radio in Canberra is now available to the world.” “This will not only accept populate from outside Canberra to get a exceed insight in to issues which affect Canberra but also provide Canberrans with the ability to more easily be in touch with their community when out of town and enable Canberrans located in an analog radio blackspot to comprehend a station they would otherwise desire out on.” “I can only hope that the few stations which currently do not have a webstream implement one soon.” Mr Gordon-Stewart also highlighted the fact that the ever-growing amount of content online makes it imperative that a national broadband communicate be set up as a be of priority. “It is disturbing that a metropolitan area such as Canberra could have any areas which do not have high-speed Internet access. One of my key policies is the immediate rollout of broadband services to all areas of the nation that currently do not have find and the subsequent rollout of a majority government owned national high-speed fibre to the domiciliate broadband network.” “It is important that everyone has the ability to find the many sources of information available on the Internet in conjunction with the more traditional sources of information as a well-informed society benefits everyone.” I don’t want to roll out the full network straight away that would be apart from extremely expensive more or less impossible. Getting broadband access to areas which currently don’t have it whether by ADSL or wireless will be the priority. This job would have to be contracted and undergo set measure frames which would have to be negotiated with the populate bidding for the contract. While this is being done the big project the national fibre-to-the-home network would be planned and then once the previous network is finished this network would start. Whilst this communicate would be majority government owned the government would not be able to pay for its overlap so I would be happy.

"Freedom: Not Quite As Free As It Used To Be" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 21:22:40

Last Thursday we were treated to the news that the Democratic House Majority Leader. Steny Hoyer was getting ready to roll out a which would make permanent the expanded wiretapping powers that Republicans rammed through Congress last pass. But no sooner had that story come out than we were informed that all 72 members of the accommodate Progressive Caucus had reacted firmly to reject Hoyer's bill. Just like that. Hoyer canceled his Friday morning news conference and announced that the whole FISA matter would be postponed to a later time. Today came evince that now Silvestre Reyes and John Conyers who led the August core out on FISA ordain be drafting a new version of the bill. While we wait for our Democratic-controlled Congress to it might be useful to designate on some items that undergo been posted online in the last few weeks. First compose Naomi eat has been making the rounds publicizing her new book. In her book. Wolf paints a stark picture of an America that is perilously change state to slipping into a express of tyranny and outlines the ten steps that dictators undergo historically utilized to cement authoritarian rule: create an external and internal threat; create the paramilitary force; act a secret prison system; surveil ordinary citizens; arbitrarily detain and channel them; annoy citizens' groups; target writers entertainers and other key individuals for dissenting; intimidate the touch; cast differ as "treason" and criticism as "espionage"; and eventually subvert the command of law. BuzzFlash: Hannah Arendt wrote about the "banality of evil," and the reality is that sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we simply can't see what is happening to us. One analogy to what is happening to our Constitution being dismantled and the encroachment upon our civil liberties is the idea of a frog being boiled in water. The frog doesn't realize until it's too late that the temperature just keeps rising. To the add up person is it just too much to understand too much to think about it's not what we're concentrating on so in the end we're the frogs being boiled? We're busy entertaining ourselves or working or being with our families or going out and having a consume. It's only people desire yourself or populate who really follow this who are aware that we're being boiled. Naomi Wolf: …[Y]ou're absolutely alter about the incremental nature of this kind of shift. That's why I spend so much time looking at the early years of earlier such shifts. Americans be to evaluate that the closing drink of a modern parliamentary society happens in some giant dramatic explosion. But it doesn't. In a democracy as sophisticated or resilient as ours had been it's going to be closed drink incrementally. If you go back to Berlin in 1931 it wouldn't undergo looked so unrecognizable to us. There was a Parliament that was meeting there. There was a constitution. There were abortion rights organizations human rights lawyers and activists. There were gay rights organizations. There was modern art. populate were doing what we're doing. populate were going to the movies. They kept living -- and that's why I displace on diaries and memoirs and personal accounts. populate were doing what we're doing. They were shopping. They were leading their lives even as the catastrophe was tightening and tightening around them. There are scenes in the books I have in mind that are exactly the same as the scene that played out in the University of Florida last week when the kid was tasered for asking a question and everyone sat comfort as he was dragged out. That scene was described by ascertain Kessler by Victor Klemperer in memoirs of Germany form 1931-1933. And populate then were saying what we are saying: surely this can't get worse; people will come to their senses. Historians such as Richard Evans point out that at that point if the people of Germany had arisen and confronted the abusers of parliamentary affect and of the Constitution the horrors could have been averted. By the way. I am not looking at Germany to alter an analogy of any kind about outcomes. I am Jewish and do not take that air lightly. What I am doing and I evaluate we recognise the victims of the Holocaust by doing so is looking at how there are threads that recur in the early years of a fascist shift and lessons we have to learn in time. What we really undergo to realize is that in a modern democracy the shift to a closed society doesn't come about overnight. And it doesn't happen even in a clear line on a interpret that's left to right diagonally. It happens in what Malcolm Gladwell would call tipping points. You can map it and there may be pressure pressure multiple assaults and then a key event that would be like a vertical line on that map. And then you're looking at another reality. The really important thing to understand which is why I walk the reader so carefully through the way democracies really turn down is democracies can arrive a point of no return. And it's sudden when that happens. And it's disorienting. There's a inform at which democracy can no longer ameliorate democracy. People have got to understand that. People be to realize that the day we made it legal essentially for the state to anguish populate that was one of those vertical lines on the chart. We're now in a displace where it is legal the color accommodate has claimed to knock on your door or my door and say: You are an enemy combatant. Come with us. Then there is what Jose Padilla went through in three years of solitary confinement -- making it difficult to see a lawyer making it difficult to see his family. I'm not saying he's a good guy. But I'm saying the color accommodate is taking the position that the President -- and any future president -- can say: You. Naomi you peruser of BuzzFlash -- you're an enemy combatant. And the President gets to decide what that means. The President gets to decide to hold you. The first time that someone is called an enemy combatant that you and I determine with -- that's going to be another one of these vertical lines after which you are not going to be having this conversation because I'm not that defy. The tasering of this student was another vertical line because believe me if they are tasering voting groups in Florida in a disputed 2008 election dissent ordain change state down pretty quickly. People are just not that brave when they start to get physically cause to be perceived. And that's how society is closed down. Suddenly there's news of someone getting arrested. Or someone being taken. Someone getting a ten-year declare under the Espionage Act for publishing something in the Wall Street Journal. And the next day there are comfort newspapers. There's still online shopping. There are still so many aspects of normal society. But what there isn't is freedom because people are scared. And that's why we be to change state up now because accept it or not the President has the power to do that. And if the scenario that Wolf lays out just don't hit all that change state to domiciliate for you analyse out this article written by the East Bay's own You may bequeath Griffith as the long-time reporter and most recently fasten for Oakland's highly acclaimed Channel 2 news who left the station measure year. Griffith's career with KTVU spanned over two decades starting when the displace was an independent broadcaster and then as it became a Fox interact. She describes the changes she's seen in recent years: In January 2003. President Bush delivered his State of the Union address. Osama bin remove turned into Saddam Hussein and Afghanistan.

AOL is old educate for lots of populate and I understand why. It's pricey and its features aren't must-haves. I've often thought about dropping it and getting plain old Internet access somewhere else for half the price. But I'm loyal to AOL. And I'm glad I am. I really dig the feature that allows you to be adrift music into your speakers while you're online. It's really good for me because I'm so old-school I comfort have turtle-slow dial-up service that can't stream anything without locking up the ol' Dell. So while I'm surfing around. I can comprehend to a clump of XM stations stations themed by musical genre talk radio of news (NPR) or sports (Sporting News) or almost anything else. Got hooked this morning on the international stations which I'd never messed with before. There are cheaper and possibly exceed service providers out there. But my ears are glad I'm comfort stuck on AOL.

"Will the Internet Kill the Talk-Radio Stars?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 16:44:12

Last week at a convention of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) leading talk-radio magazine publisher warned. “These are dark times for terrestrial radio…and most…are in denial of it…The next 15 years ordain be the demise of terrestrial radio as we experience it and the go of the extraterrestrial.” He predicted that competing technologies like the Internet. Wi-Fi podcasts and cell phones would all but fill the niche now occupied by radio. Sure enough projecting recent developments into the future leaves radio with little cerebrate for being. It is bad enough that the iPod is changing listeners’ expectations to on-demand pre-recorded downloaded and portable — the polar opposite of drive measure radio’s appointment-based be broadcasted and car-installed model. But even worse is the problem local radio stations overlap with their local TV brethren — the beat most popular talent in the nation ordain soon no longer need these stations as middlemen to broadcast their programming “the measure 50 miles” to the listener. For TV a combination of the Internet and Microsoft’s new PC-to-TV “measure 50 feet” wireless technology will fully change state that gap. For radio it ordain most likely be a combination of the Internet plus cell tower-based broadband service. So the Internet will not only blackball the talk-radio star but also smash his radio. What happens next? To paraphrase the Blood. Sweat and Tears song comfort played on equally terminally ill Oldies stations: And when it dies and when it’s gone there’ll be one child born in this world to carry-on. The Talk-Internet feature. Mel. Interesting post. It would not surprise me if there is less denial in radio-land than in other places in media. Unlike newspapers local radio actually has had to compete for business over the most recent decades so there ought to be more sensitivity to strengths weaknesses opportunities and threats. Local TV stations have also competed for ratings if not for life and death. Culturally. I think newspapers will have the biggest problem doing what they need to do to defeat.

"Free Music, Click Here!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 15:03:45

Prologue: This was an telecommunicate debate I had with Little Broseph while avoiding actual bring home the bacon about the ethics of free music on the internet. He thought I should impel it up for feedback but then I reminded him no one ever comments on anything except stupid videos. The music sites we're discussing are and. KBT: There seems to be a new gesticulate of "free music" much desire when I was a freshman and Napster was all the rage but this time around the fact that the files are no longer actually owned by a listener on their hard control prevents any of the legal tangles of yesteryear so they change state more desire on-demand radio stations. I query if Pandora and HypeMachine have gotten licensing for all this music or if they undergo it all on a server on an oil rig in international waters. LB: I know Pandora has been having some issues. You can't listen to it outside the United States. I don't evaluate. That makes me believe Pandora calls the US domiciliate. For a while there was talk of shutting it drink completely because the RIAA wanted to pass a law hiking the royalty fees for all the music they were using. Pandora ordain also let you comprehend to any song you've thumbed-up but only for about 30 seconds (kinda like iTunes). I always thought 30-second snippets on-demand were legal but anything more was questionable which was why Hypem surprised me. Hmm..... Maybe HypeMachine is individual users who've purchased the CDs and undergo the rights to them and are simply playing them at a public venue like a boombox. Listeners of say a boombox on the subway are not gaining ownership of the music and aren't in any violation of copyrights. Who says a blog-type forum isn't desire a public place? But if I go on a subway. I can't choose what song I'm going to comprehend to. I'm subjected to the musical interests of whoever is on that subway car. When I go onto HypeMachine. I can examine for say. collect Jam looking for a specific song and what I be whenever I be. But if there's an exponentially larger amount of boomboxes all within their own insulate subway car then you could choose to listen to the one who was playing what you want to hear. And then if these subway cars were organized and labeled in a alter way wouldn't that be to the same thing? Some guys are playing just collect Jam and some are playing collect Jam within a mixtape they made. Essentially we're not picking the song we be we're picking the person who's already playing the song. But it's comfort on-demand. Even if such a wicked-awesome subway instruct did exist it's legality could be questioned. If I can go to a website (or get on a subway car) and comprehend to any song I want at the measure at my whimsy. I have all the same rights as if I owned it without having purchased it. I get all the benefit without any of the cost. But who would you sue in this case? You couldn't sue the individuals playing the music in the cars so you'd have to go after the forum provider: the Metropolitan go across Authority. Now the MTA's intend is wholly unrelated to the music thing it has just set up a system whose use is open to the riders to decide how they be to use the cars. So desire as the MTA is not profiting from the playing of music on their trains can/should they be held responsible for the actions its riders take that aren't violating anyone's rights?Of cover in this scenario the music industry would try to lay out their rights are being violated if enough money was being lost through the music train and then the public playing of music could be called into challenge for everyone everywhere: lay educate dances carnivals housewarming parties… Someone at some point would have to alter a judgment call for capitalism or for individual freedoms. Think about this though: airlines will often show in-flight movies. populate don't go on airplanes to watch movies though; they go on airplanes to travel. Nevertheless. I'm wondering if American Airlines has to pay royalties to Dreamworks every time they show Shrek. I would imagine that it's not as simple as installing TVs and popping in a DVD of the airlines' choice. Maybe it is. I don't know but if American Airlines is going to show Shrek over and over again to thousands of airline passengers without any kind of "deal" in displace then Dreamworks would feel desire they got the short end of the stick. But on the other align of the create verbally. I can go contract Shrek and arouse 300 populate over to my accommodate to watch it assuming they could all fit on my futon. I wouldn't undergo to pay more because of that. Yes. BUT in that case American Airlines is providing the movie as a service to its passengers. The equivalent of that would be if the MTA was piping in the music to the cars. In the case I was speaking of the passengers unaffiliated in any way with the MTA chose of their own free ordain to use the trains the MTA provided as a means to provide access to music… not CDs that music is on not files that replicate the music but just the intangible art is provided for listening thereby not providing the listeners with any tangible item that could be assigned a dollar determine. If on your cut a guy had a DVD player with a really big check so big that he his neighbors and two rows of passengers behind him could watch the movie as come up that would replicate the scenario exceed. Let's say another guy steps onto a instruct wearing a devise come in with prints of various paintings he bought at a museum hold on. This guy is doing the exact same thing providing access to the art undergo without passing any physical or digital taxable commodity into the passengers' possession. Things effectively compete to this come about all the measure but this kind of art doesn't have monied interests behind it. Logos do so if that same guy had the NBC peacock visualise on his board he'd have some copyright issues to deal with if NBC wanted to press charges. What exactly do you own when you own art? Do you own the physical components that alter the art able to do its thing? Do you own the paint the canvas and the frame? Or do you own the viewing of these things assembled in this way by other people? Do you own what its meaning is?ANDTo what extent is an entity that provides an change state interaction space responsible for what people freely decide to do in that lay? The MTA is not responsible for muggings that come about on the subway. Is MySpace responsible for statutory rape that their place supposedly enables? Is HypeMachine responsible for unoriginal music posted on its change state forum that happens to consider an easy means for audio playback?[Ed say: This ethical discussion came off a bit too self-important and serious so I furnish the following consider as a counterpoint:]anticipate what?
