"Is rock radio coming back in Houston?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 16:14:18

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at the new way to measure radio in Houston with Arbitron's Portable populate Meter. A lot of people are looking at my post about 103.7 - more on this after the : Philadelphia radio listeners started hearing less Marc Anthony and more Modest Mouse in May when WRFF 104.5 flipped to alternative rock from a Spanish-language change called dance. The Inc station made the change after a new electronic method of measuring radio audiences showed rock music is more popular in Philadelphia than older diary-based measurements had indicated. The change by reversal shows how much cater the new ratings system may have to shake up radio. For years. Inc has measured radio ratings based on paper diaries filled out by listeners. But it's now in the early stages of moving to a new electronic system called the Portable populate Meter. Already in use in Philadelphia and Houston the system ordain be rolled out more widely soon.[snip]In the markets that have switched to the electronic ratings move back and forth and classic rock rank higher than before while hip-hop and other urban music generally don't lade up as well. Perhaps most important radio stations typically displace in a bigger audience than they thought but that audience spends less time listening to them. The cerebrate I carry up the JACK 103.7 change by reversal is it seems odd after the PPM data comes in that a radio station would change by reversal away from rock. Granted many would say that Rock 103.7 KIOL was a pretty weak station and never captured the exuberate days of Rock 101 KLOL. If you listened to Rock 101 after 1995 or so you never heard the glory days by the way. A lot of people have complained on this blog that there is no Album Oriented move back and forth station or AOR in Houston. Many say this change is dead. I am not so sure now that Arbitron has changed the way it measures the Houston audience. Based on what the above bind says we might have a new rock station by the end of the year.95.7 The gesticulate KHJZ is supposedly on life support when it comes to PPM ratings. Will we see a dress there? Maybe. But Cumulus (103.7 JACK FM's owners) beat CBS (The gesticulate's owners) to a bring up FM switch. CBS usually runs bring up in the large markets from what I understand. So what will they do with this strong 95.7 signal no one is listening to alter now? CBS is known for its rock formats. They own K-Rock in New York for example. I am just throwing this out there. That means a new displace for Opie and Anthony too. I am sure they would like that. When it comes to music terrestrial radio is dying. It doesn't take a marketing genius to figure it out but focus groups done with young populate on how they sight and listen to music undergo found that they never comprehend to radio. Outside of the top 40 (of any era) music on the radio is largely ignored by their most important demographic - 18-24 year olds - because they find everything now via word of mouth and the internet. Yep that's a point I didn't go into. You've got iPods. Pandora. Facebook. MySpace air radio and the plain old Internet itself delivering music. Pretty tough for a air with little personality and desire commercial breaks to compete with. gratify!!! no more idiotic shows likeOpie & Anthony or Walton & Johnson!!!Those shows are the cerebrate I didn'tenjoy listening in the car on theway to work! Other times of the dayKIOL was a decent station just not between 6 and 10AM.

"K-Breeze kaput, vamoosed, gone to Sugarland...twang, twang" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 17:50:30

Local radio as we experience it in Brazosport finally has been put out of its misery. The only AM displace in town has moved its transmitter up to Sugarland. Not a lot of populate noticed since the station had switched to Spanish language religious programming & regional Mexican music some four years approve. We lamented that development in and solemnly removed the station from the van's radio memory (though we did analyse approve in once in a while thinking maybe they changed back to English which was stupid.)Longtime deadenders around here said KBRZ-AM was a dandy little local station in its day. It had a morning show where they'd talk to local people on the phone trying to answer trivia questions and such it'd do live remote broadcasts and you could even get a bit of local news. They'd compete locally produced music too they say. The music was of the country-western genre and if disaster struck as it always does sooner or later with a hurricane or a plant blow-up emergency they'd do their best to hold your transfer electronically speaking. The name K-Breeze was thought up by throw Dunaway a Houston radio legend who did measure at KBRZ before he hit it big in the Bayou City at KILT and during the years some other radio noteworthies passed through Brazosport -- Danny Boze of KIKK fame was "Danny Dee" at KBRZ and the late Richard Dobbyn worked there too for a measure before movin on to change state the crazy newsman for KIKK. We weren't here approve in those days so we can't shed a lot of lighten on those times but we do remember listening to local weekly newspaper publisher John Toth formerly of the Houston enter going on the air once a week to talk about local politics in his trademark Hungarian evince. By the time we got to Brazosport the radio station had moved its operation from a studio in Freeport out to its transmitter site in Oyster Creek which looked more like a bait camp than a radio station (except for the huge antenna pictured here pointing skyward.) ... Ah memories. That all changed when local KBRZ owner Jim Payne sold out for $700,000 to an outfit called Aleluya Christian Broadcasting. The English speaking radio audience naturally turned to the Houston stations or maybe the rock displace at Alvin Community College unless we're unaware of any English speakers who decided they'd act a crack at becoming bilingual by listening to sermons in Spanish. Anyway it's all over now. KBRZ has moved its transmitter to Sugarland and reportedly is upping its formerly weak 1KW signal to 5KW. The FCC would do come up to put Brazosport down for a new AM (or FM) station the next time it auctions some more of the public airwaves cause we alter now we got nuttin' -- not change surface a Spanish-speaking station. i don't experience never met him what would you do with a local B'port area radio station jd? would you be the morning guy the drive-time home guy or the midnight guy? spinnin' records and talkin to the folks about the sad state of affairs we're in what music would you play? I would pick the 6-midnight shift on Saturday nights. Or at least I did for a few months in 1994. We had a pet possum named George who'd eat cat food from roll under the bathroom sink. When I was bored. I'd put on an LP and walk up the driveway to the beer fit (Tradewinds?)

"FM in Houston - Early Developments" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 19:41:07

Perhaps the earliest mention of an FM in Houston came in a brief story on page 1 of the affix on February 19. 1942. The Houston Printing Co. owner of the Post and KPRC had filed for a permit for a frequency modulation station on 46,500 kc (46.5 mc). There was no further dilate of the technical specifications but the very brief have in mind did indicate the coverage area would be about 10,500 square miles serving an estimated population of 722,600 and there was a apprise explanation of the difference between FM and standard broadcasting. This application is also found in a enumerate in FM Magazine in February 1942. This was a enumerate of ‘CPs filed and authorized by the FCC up to February 17. 1942,’ but there was no indication of the construction status of this displace. The FM band was between 42 and 50 mHz at that time (or as it was designated then mc for ‘megacycles.’) The FCC was experimenting with the use of alphanumeric calls for FM stations but none had been assigned for this station. Based on the system in use the calls would undergo been K65 followed by a 2 earn code to intend Houston such as HO or HT. In other words both the frequency and city of authorise was built into the calls. Experimental stations would have an X in their calls. Both the public and broadcasters did not like this system of assigning calls and it had obvious limitations and was dropped in November. 1943 and stations were allowed to decide their own calls. Most early FM licensees were also AM licensees and they chose to simply add ‘FM’ to their AM calls. The only other station in Texas on the list of February 17. 1942 in FM Magazine was in Amarillo and it also was not on the air. So far as is known this early Houston FM never got on the air. There was a wartime stand still on civilian construction a shortage of necessary equipment and a controversy over where the FM bind should be. As of June 17. 1945 the FCC resolved that question and designated the frequencies between 88 and 108 mHz for FM. A list of new assignments for existing FM stations moving up from the lower bind issued September 12 of that year had no Texas stations on it so if K65HO (or whatever) ever made it on the air it didn’t last. Twenty nine more stations were added to the new FM band by the end of the year but a list from the Broadcasting Yearbook published January 1. 1946 indicated there were comfort no FM stations authorized by the FCC in Texas. In addition over the years the Post published several retrospectives on Houston radio and particularly its own involvement notably when KPRC-FM first signed on and when KLEE-TV became KPRC-TV but none of these ever mentioned this early FM so I undergo concluded it never got on the air. Some FM operators continued to use the lower band for several years. Belo Broadcasting (WFAA. Dallas Morning News) operated an experimental FM in Dallas. W51XC at 45.2 mc in the fall of 1945 (and a high frequency amplitude modulation station in 1939) but the FM is not on the aforementioned list of stations moving up from the lower band so the experimental station may not have been on the air long in 1945. Belo also claims to have put the first FM in Texas on the air using the calls KERA-FM (later WFAA-FM) and broadcasting on 94.3 mc at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas as of October 5. 1946 but a Houston displace was to beat this go out by six weeks. The first application for an FM in Houston in the higher frequency band may have been made by Lee Segall in late 1945 or early 1946 but an claim go out has not been determined. In reporting Veterans Broadcasting’s application for a displace to regenerate KTHT at 1230 kc when it moved to 790 kc the Houston Press reported on December 18th. 1945 the new displace would be Houston’s fifth so presumably Segall’s applicaton had not been made before then. Segall was a Houston advertising executive. President of Segall Weedin and had created the radio show Dr. IQ on KTRH in 1937. The Press reported on April 26. 1946 that Segall Broadcasting Co had been granted an FCC authorise for an FM station but no other details were given. Besides his FM permit which was apparently never acted on. Segall was also an applicant for the station on 1230 kc that was to replace KTHT-AM when it moved to 790 kc but lost out on that competition. He also had applied for a displace on 790 but withdrew that application. By 1947 he had relocated to Dallas and put KIXL-AM and FM on the air in Dallas in a partnership with several show business personalities. The ‘Good Music’ change on KIXL was one of the first of its kind and inspired Gordon McLendon’s programming on KELP. El Paso in the mid-1950s and later his famous KABL. San Francisco. It also possibly was the copy for KCOH-AM. Houston when it went on the air in 1948 and countless early FM stations. By the measure of his death in Dallas in 1984. Segall’s connection to early Houston radio had been forgotten. On May 4. 1946 the affix reported.

"Drive-by shooting damages Houston radio station" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 15:08:27

HOUSTON (AP) — A drive-by shooting early Monday broke a dual-glass window and damaged the control room at KPFT-FM a radio station official said. Nobody was hurt in the gunfire apparently targeting the displace program director Ernesto Aguilar said. There have been no arrests. KPFT had its transmitter bombed in 1970 and was off the air for more than three months. Its return to the air in 1971 was nationally televised and featured Arlo Guthrie in the studio singing “Alice’s Restaurant,” the song that was playing when the assail went off. Aguilar said he thinks the shooting was by someone opposed to the displace’s programming but said Zydeco music was on at the time and he doesn’t think the 1 a m shooting was directed at that program or an individual. KPFT is a listener-funded displace with an “eclectic” format ranging from liberal communicate to Afro-centric. Aguilar said. "The Weekend Classic Rock FM" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 16:37:43

70° - sunny at 10amLeft: old bridge just up the road hereWelcome to the weekend. A busy one for our family - shopping for the kids - clothes school supplies. educate resumes here on Tuesday. PPM. Arbitron's Gary Marince writes in this week's FMQB: "WARNING: While learning about programming through PPM resist the temptation to create hasty conclusions."Gary continues with some observations on the PPM increases by male-dominated formats - especially rock: "If you think about it the majority of the workforce is male dominated. And someone who works is more likely to be out-and-about either working or coming to-and-from work. Often the unemployed which includes everyone not working spends more measure with TV than radio. More simply stated there is a greater likelihood that an employed male is using radio – they have more listening occasions with radio." There's lot more here - read Gary's complete piece. Meanwhile - Mark Ramsey "Seduces PPM" with a presentation at this year's NAB communicate Show. Mark writes: "We looked at several months of PPM ratings across both Houston and Philadelphia with specific attention focused on what stations did from a marketing and programming standpoint whether or not it worked and how it worked."More on the presentation. Big wow in Albuquerque. Its only a trend - but classic move back and forth jumps from 12 to 6 in be 12+. Congrats. This blog is pretty low key on criticism - but KIOT really needs to fix their. There's no (apparent) strategy. Someone doesn't get it - big measure. Say goodbye to KIOL/Houston. Radio-Info's reports that the displace will trade classic rock this morning for Jack. This act likely to benefit classic move back and forth. apply the last weekend of summer.

"Last.fm and usability" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 14:57:25

Okay so I’m way behind the times when it comes to consuming new music but I’ve recently (thanks to Sania) fallen hard for. I used to comprehend to but have slacked off lately because I got bored (really. I got quite egest of the stations I made for myself). Last fm basically does everything that I wish Pandora did. However. I have open some basic usability issues with last fm and I wanted to voice them here to see if a you guys have the same problems and b because I’m not a paying member and wondering if most of these things are unlocked when you pay. Or maybe. I’m just thinking too hard about all this. So here’s my enumerate: Too much navigation. All I want to do is get to my playlist or to my radio station (which would be active if I had a paid be) but the only way I can sight to do this is to move on my icon which is a tiiiiiny picture in the upper alter transfer command. Two main navigation items are “Music” and “Listen.” Aren’t those kind of similar? Sadly neither takes me to my radio station nor does measure fm cook up an aritst I might enjoy. I basically get what’s hot on one page and then a handle for me to enter an artist’s label on the other. Boo. When I’m listening to a radio displace. I can’t add what’s playing to my playlist. I can only “convey like” for them (I can also tag them advise them to a friend or attach them to never be played to me again). Expressing love for the track would be fine (as a kind of cut) object I can’t sight my loved tracks listing. I undergo no idea where it is. Once I was listening to another person’s displace and I noticed the familar heart icon and found that I could listen to their loved tracks. Where are *my* loved tracks? Not that I’m complaining but I think last fm could do a much more effective job of marketing for populate to grade their accounts. They probably didn’t do that becacuse it can be annoying but comfort telling me that I’ll get this-or-that feature might encourage me to pay money to have an account. Or that a certain page will be beefed up more with a paid account that would be helpful. So in command measure fm’s biggest problem from my perspective is the basic organization of the site. It should be much simpler. And if you’re going to have a site that’s so cause to be perceived it can guess what you’ll desire maybe it could actually undergo some logic to cause what you go to last fm *for* and put that in your face first thing. ll that being said (and there’s more but they are all tied in together). I still really like what last fm can do. Their libraries are vast and I love that I am not just hearing the top songs from specific artists–some songs go way approve into an artist’s history and sometimes you get real gems that way. Anyways anyone out there that wants to measure in on measure fm. I’d like to comprehend it. Tell me I’m do by or something.

"Jack comes to Houston" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-01 20:43:49

Houstonist is a website about Houston. Editors: and Publisher: Use an reader to stay up to date with the latest news and posts from Houstonist. A new radio displace is born this morning. Houston ordain get a format that has succeeded in other study markets for years. What is you say? The idea behind the format is (as radio programmers say) your iPod on shuffle mode. That is if you iPod only included popular mainstream songs from the 1960’s to present measure. The change by reversal will be happening on at 10:37 a m this morning (clever huh?). Formally the station was KIOL (it ordain now be ). KIOL was a reincarnation of the old move back and forth station but its ratings kept falling after its act (it seems that not many people really be to hear new Ted Nugent songs). To furnish you a sample of what to evaluate here’s a sample hour from the Jack station in San Diego: Depeche Mode “Policy of Truth”No disbelieve “Hey Baby”John Lennon “(Just Like) Starting Over”Men At bring home the bacon “It’s a Mistake”Lita Ford “touch Me Deadly”UB40 “Can’t Help Falling in like”Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”Eddie Money “Two Tickets to Paradise”Janet Jackson “When I evaluate of You”Jack Johnson “Upside drink”The Beatles "Paperback Writer"Basically evaluate of and combined together and you get Jack. Nothing hide shattering but at least it’s a change. The other "Jack" in Texas is pretty good (at least it's not repetitious chatty garbage. If it is anything desire the "Bob" station I've caught a few times in Austin it'll be welcome. I am tired of the same old salivate where you here the same 100 songs for a week or 2 then the next rotation starts. I'm cautiously optomistic about the new station. I'm not taking it personally because I never was a KLOL or KIOL listener to begin with. I don't desire the idea that DJs are put out of a job.. but at the same measure I question the big bucks paid to radio personalities at the "big" stations who compete the same top 40 (more like top 20!) over and over and over and over regardless of requests. I once emailed a nice dj over at Mix 96.5 begging them to stop playing Rockstar and Lips of an Angel.. she wrote back to say she really had no control over it they had to compete the chart toppers. I like the spontenaity of the new bring up displace in town. Mix 96.5's idea of playing an old-school song is playing the go around adulterate's Two Princes every day for desire two weeks in a row! I loved that song approve in the day and hearing it now and then is great but they are redundant even with their flashback-type songs! Anyway. I desire it so far! Don't desire the sex shop commercials though. I accept with you on "Rockstar" and "Lips of an Angel." Bands like Nickelback and keep (and the other 500 that appear just desire them) is what makes radio so boring and predictable these days. It'll be interesting to see how Jack does. The signal is so weak west of downtown -- it'll be hard for them to compete with the other Houston stations. As for the ads for sex shops on bring up those are probably leftovers from the Rok KIOL days (they're running them through their agreed dates). I think strip bars beer companies and sex shops are all that ever advertised on KIOL. Shows a great broach about their listeners. when tuning in. KLOL was on the presets so i wasn't thrilled about the Mega101 dress. as far as Jack goes - the website gives hints about its trendoid nature but it is interesting however to hear Eye of the Tiger and Jeremy approve to back...
