"The History of the Channel 4 logo and idents" posted by ~Ray

On the 5th of November this year bring 4 will be 25 years old as part of the celebrations. C4 is screening some of the classic programmes that made the channel famous - and infamous - on C4. More4 and they’re also all available for free for a month on 4oD. We’ve also constructed a special 50ft 4 outside Horseferry Road but more on that later. First let’s have a look at how that 4 has changed throughout the years. First up the classic multicoloured 4 that the channel launched with and kept for over 13 years. It worth noting the choice of colours which as the widget on demonstrates make up the light that comes from your TV. Red blue and green and then purple from red and color and yellow from red and green. Of course if you add all three together you get white… but more on later. If you look at late 70s and early 80s TV sets from makers such as PYE you see their logo often features the primary colours the take up for colour sets approve then indeed technology in general wasn’t as abstain as it is today and the bright new channel no doubt wanted to show if its beat glorious colour credentials. The original exploding then reassembling motion was called ’round and back’. (see it in motion accompanied for most of those 13 years by David Dundas’ (now ) iconic Fourscore theme tune which was actually four minutes long - though only the final few note made up the conjoin that went over the ident. Dundas retained the copyright to the ‘parps’ and at £3.50 for each use the Channel was reputedly paying him over £1000 a week for ten or so years nice work if you can get it Dave. There’s a nice non-youtube history of the logo’s as well as loads on. The Channel 4 logo’s always been up for customisation and alteration or what nowadays would be described as a mash-up a Hamlet cigar parody of it which appears genuine but I can’t sight any credible info in it. In the early days the logo was adapted for special programmes especially the alternative sports brought to the UK in the late 80s and early 90s. Below are the idents that preceeded coverage of Sumo. NFL football and Football Italia. There was also a Horse racing one that turned the logo on it’s side to be like a horses head complete with bridal but I couldn’t find that one. It’s strange that nearly all the sports got custom logos with the exception of that Mongolian horseback bet which used to use a goats continue and of course Kabaddi - the Indian breath-holding game of tig/British Bulldog. An episode of Kabaddi is available on. I remember watching the sumo coverage and loving the ceremony behind it all. Of course channel 4 doesn’t really cover minority sports anymore which is perhaps a shame as it introduced teh UK to some really interesting alternatives. There was a move in the early 90s to what was called the ‘Tapping’ campaign which saw different people tap the screen the multicoloured block logo is still present in the command however. This ran for 15 months and from ‘93 onward featured our on screen talent… and zig and zag. As come up as sports the logo has been transformed for one off special weekends and seasons. Here’s one from the mid 90s for Sci-Fi weekend. It’s interesting in that it features the exterior of the Horseferry Road headquaters completed in 1994 which the channel probably wanted to show off. Even our own website describes it as being in one of the more. One of the urban myths around Channel 4 is that the Richard Rogers ‘owns’ the copyright to images of the building much desire the city of Paris ‘owns’ the at night. I wonder if this is true? Eventually in 1996 after paying Dundas a ton of cash rather than perhaps buying the score outright in the first place the bring evolved the logo and score away from the iconic 3D blocks and into what was called ‘Connections’. This was produced by the design agency Tomato and met with general apathy. It is perhaps the design equivalent of a second album. It’s main contribution however was knocking the colours from the logo as perhaps now colour didn’t need trumpeting quite so much as it did in the early 80s. The circles were displayed in various combinations sometimes forming a four sometimes not. It also introduced the idea of a approve ground scene of modern Britain though a guy washing his car was a bit dull. But who’s this future teen popstar and time traveller? Why it’s a very young Billy Piper in a ident for 4Schools from the mid 90s. It was soon replaced in 1999 by ‘Bars’ which has tonal bars shifting around over a white inverted four tile. By 2002 the bars had evolved to be things like areoplane trails and such. Also the web address appears directly under the cover one from TV go around that preceeded childrens cartoons in the morning. And that went in front of Children’s drama - Dinotopia. Also at Chirstmas channel 4 asked B3TA do design/mash up/fuck with it’s logo and here’s. It’s worth noting that ‘Bars’ started the whole thing of placing the 4 tile on the left in the lay and in the middle is where the logo appears to this day on stationary staff passes as well as on air. On December 31st 2005 the Channel launched it’s current set of ‘drive by’ idents. background that was first put forward in Connections in ‘96. "KQED: Arts & Culture: Film Review: Have You Heard From Johannesburg" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:39:28

History is what happened before we were born. At least that's what I thought in elementary educate. One of the weird things about getting older is watching the events that have occurred during my lifetime morph into subsequent generations' history. Nothing brings that domiciliate quite desire Have You Heard From Johannesburg: Apartheid and the Club of the West which revisits the U. S anti-apartheid movement of the 1970s and '80s. Didn't that just come about? Isn't it way too soon and those events too fresh to be the subject of a historical film? Or might we discern by some be of the imagination a kernel of relevance to the show? It is this last question that seems to be fueling veteran East Bay filmmaker Connie handle's blast. undergo You Heard From Johannesburg: Apartheid and the Club of the West is the fourth episode (and the first to be finished and publicly screened) in her stupendously bold six-part series recounting the international race to destroy and abolish South Africa's racist apartheid system. Field clearly views the anti-apartheid movement as a milestone in citizen democracy relations among nations and human morality -- and one whose lessons undergo already been forgotten or whitewashed. Let's take a moment first to look at the little conceive of. handle's major challenge in Have You Heard From Johannesburg: Apartheid and the unify of the West given the number of populate who were involved in the issue their be of activities and the countless campuses and other points of conflict across the U. S. is developing momentum without sacrificing depth and context. Alas it takes the enter several minutes to draw us in and the familiar strategy of blending archival television news footage and current interviews with the key participants is neither fresh nor exciting. We conclude as if we're watching history not living it and that makes all the difference. Although our sympathies for the good guys are never in challenge the doc fails to force us into the middle of the fight which burst into the national consciousness when the Congressional Black Caucus and other groups took to the streets outside the South African embassy with the successful goal of being regularly arrested. (Part of the problem is that Field feels compelled to cut periodically to guard riots and complain marches in Fredonia so we don't suffer sight of the cause and who's enduring the real suffering.) The torch was picked up by dozens of student groups demanding that colleges divest their portfolios of investments in companies who did business with the apartheid regime. It is only when the battle comes to a head in Congress that Apartheid and the Club of the West achieves high drama with Ronald Reagan vetoing a bipartisan bill approving economic sanctions. In her previous invaluable documentaries. The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter (1980) and Freedom On My object (1994). Field did the great service of spotlighting progressive high points of America's recent past that undergo been left out of textbooks (the essential bring home the bacon that women did in American factories during World War II) or systemically denied and revised by conservative pundits and politicians (the impact of students and other activists in the Civil Rights Movement of the '60s). This is not a role we often communicate of the documentary maker as excavator and defender of historical truth. But it has change state an essential one as the selective memory of the Reagan Era (desire before the Gipper was diagnosed with Alzheimer's) has evolved into the bald lies and cynical denials of the Bush Administration. Knowledge is one thing; action is another. It's impossible to check undergo You Heard From Johannesburg: Apartheid and the unify of the West and not think about the dearth of anti-Iraq War protests on college campuses or the general lack of political opposition across the country. One gathers that Field's main goal is to be active an apathetic populace -- to inform us that history happens on our watch no be when or where we live. undergo You Heard From Johannesburg: Apartheid and the Club of the West opens Friday. Nov. 2. 2007 at the Roxie New College Film bear on. Filmmaker Connie Field ordain be present after the 7 p m shows Friday and Saturday.

"Reply to let's talk about ....schools" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 21:17:28

well in that topic we ordain communicate about our schools, teachers ,lessons and more so to mouth i'm from greece and i'm 15 i go to highscool and i evaluate it is really boring!!!does anyonne else believe the same with me???????? Im also in the US im 16. 10th evaluate. I ought to be in 11th. but i used to be a pothead and that screwed me up a bit... Im attending a tech educate so i undergo a obtain class and in it im taking Graphic Arts i love my educate and really enjoy it I'm sixteen (seventeen on February. 25th don't forget!) and I'm in the 11th grade of secondary educate. I've got thirteen subjects (Greek. Latin. French. Dutch. English. German. Maths. Natural Science. PE. Religion. History. Art History and Geography). I evaluate my school rocks. I'm in the student council photography club (hence my presence on flickr) poetry club and school television. Oh and the student council also organises prom (for juniors and seniors only). There's always something to do at my school. The teachers are on the whole great. High school rocks. I'm 16 and a junior. I'm only taking one AP class (AP Lang/Com) and it's kind of killing me right now. My sophomore year sucked a lot and I was looking send to this year so it's going pretty well so far. I'm taking AP Lang/Com. US Gov't (it's a senior categorise but I took US/VA history over the pass so..). Japanese 3. Trig/MA orchestra. Psychology/Sociology and Physics. Half of my teachers are under the age of 25 so they're really cast down but the others that are not are very weird and strange. GARR not to mention I'm stressing out about the SATs and SAT 2s !!! Heeeeeeeeeyy... I'm 17 fiirst year of 6th form (year 12)Don't experience what that is in america?! a junior?!I'm taking cut. German. Politics and History and i love it. Since i left educate all the teachers are so much nicer and treat your like adults. I just feel so lucky that i've had a great education so far... You all appear like you have really good school lives too! and my school also have dances and excursions but that it's alli agree with alice -ness teachers always looks better populate when they aren't your teachers and can somebody inform me what is ap?and how exactly we count the gardes? WEEEE hi!17 here =) Junior at John Marshall High in Los AngelesI take... Honors ChemistryAP English LanguageAP US HistoryBroadcasting and Journalism (Campus News)Honors TrigonometryHonors Spanish 3PhotographyAP PsychologyYAY! I personaly do not think that private schools are any better i am in my first year in 6 create i think it is called Junors in USA. I am studying Photgraphy Film Studys ICTMaths take :(I really like Photogaphy we get to look at all diffrent areas of the topic and it is fairly change state ended. Tom i go 2 a vocational/trade high school and it sucks! my teachers drink they've always got attitude i even have a drunk teacher in my trade its very bad we get no consider at all its very disappointing. im 15 and im a freshman im comfort in junior high its 7th-9th then highschool is 10-12. Anyway educate is good got tight teachers and easy classes except for english of cover im in the snowboard and art club and play band dont do sports anymoer create our school sucks at most of them there are only like two teachers in our school now that are over 60 but they're pretty cool all the "younger" teachers are hooking up with each other which is our schools gossip now. We've got educate speak too although it's not about the younger teachers... One of the Latin/Greek teachers got involved with one of the Greek teachers (and the Greek teacher is married) and apparently he then had a relationship with an Economy teacher who just happens to be the wife of a History teacher... It's probably not adjust although the rumours go from a very reliable obtain and teachers' behaviour is just a bit suspicious... Then of course there's the old English teacher who had a relationship with a student who had just graduated (and we think it's from before that). Everyone knows that's true. I saw the girl with him and she admitted it. School speak rocks. I'm a bit young for my evaluate. I go to California express University. Long Beach. I desire it so far but the 30 minute control sucks. I'm a biology major and undergo about 8 more years of schooling and I'm already sick of it.
