"Amateur Radio Field Day" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:49:01

By Dave Glass The last week end in June in almost every county and locality here in theUnited States you will see Hams (Amateur communicate Operators) hanging wireantennas in trees putting antennas up in parking lots or vacant lots orin fields or in school yards. Some of the antennas they hang are home madeand some can be bought at a Ham Retail Store but they all transmit andreceive on the frequency they were made for! This is FIELD DAY! They set up tents to sleep in (mostly in shifts) and tents to operate theirradios from (to act the equipment out of the sun and rain). The Hams bringradios computers label keyers. 12 volt batteries inverters converters, and some type of generating equipment. As you see they are setting up topractice running their rigs when commercial cater is not available wherethey are at! These are individual Hams a small group of Hams or some Ham Clubs as theyalso get contest points for contacts with other Hams through out the countrythat are not using commercial power. I have change surface seen a Ham on a bicyclethat was mounted on a frame cranking an alternator through a battery topower the radio that he was using. Seeing that. I was convinced that someHams will use anything to charge a battery or power their radios whencommercial power is not available! The ARRL (American Radio Relay unify is a National Amateur Radio Club withmany local chapters) has had field day competition since 1933. Almost allthe Hams involved in the handle day exercise are also members of ARES. RACES,or SKYWARN which are a few of the emergency organizations made up of Hamsand other interested people. During the year. ARES members go messages(in a certain format) some from foreign countries or domestic places to aRadio Operator that lives in the same county or locality as the receivingperson for the message. That Ham then calls the person that the message isfor using the telephone to deliver the message. Sometimes there is a returnmessage to the originator so it is put in the correct change and sent backin the same manner that was used originally. This helps to keep operatorsboth familiar with message format and the method to go a message to thecorrect area as well as what to do with it then! In each area that these Hams set up to operate their rigs from non-commercialpower they have at least one computer. Depends on the radios that they havebut they could use this computer to keep track of the different stationsthat they have made communicate with or it could be connected to a.

"6 Common Radio Types" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:40:38

When we think of radios we often evaluate of the write of communicate we comprehend to our favorite music and the news but there are many types of radios that are used throughout the world. Here are 6 Common radio types that you should know about.1. 27 MHz Radios - This is the main radio frequency used by inform services and recreational boaters. That’s because it’s the lowest cost and it is suitable for use on the water. 27 MHz radios provide a be of 8 to 12 miles or 10 to 15 nautical miles.27 MHz radios can accommodate ship to displace communications and displace to shore communications. They are able to communicate bother alerts choose up weather forecasts and marine safety reports as long as you are within the transmitting area.2. VHF Radios - Cost more but they have a exceed range and a exceed clarity than their cheaper counterparts the 27 MHz radio. Coverage ranges from 16 to 24 miles or 20 to 30 nautical miles. VHF radios can be used from one vessel to another or for displace to shore communication. They are able to communicate distress alerts choose up defy forecasts and marine safety reports as long as you are within the transmitting area. VHF licensing is required. Depending on your country will be on what licensing you require. Some places require a one measure licensing fees while other countries require you to also hold a valid VHF Certificate of Proficiency. Check with your local area.3. HF Radios - HF is used for long hold ship to shore communication and is very expensive. It uses sky waves to transfer so coverage is dependant on atmospheric conditions the frequency being used and the time of day. Generally the closer you are to your base station the lower the frequency you use. They have far superior coverage compared to the 27 MHz and VHF radios.4. Ham Radios - Ham radios accept for communication around the world providing you have a HF Ham Radio. VHF ham radios will only transmit within a 20 mile radius perhaps somewhat further depending on whether conditions. Operating a ham radio requires that you act a course and get your authorise. There are thousands of amateur ham radio operators around the world and it presents itself as a very interesting hobby. You never experience who you might communicate with. Ham radio operators communicate using two way communicate stations that are either located at their domiciliate or in a mobile unit desire their car or ride. They can communicate using either Morse label or express. Some ham users use satellites while others have mastered the skill of bouncing their signals off the atmosphere allowing them to communicate around the world.5. CB Radios - Were quite popular in the 1970s and early 1980s but because of changes in the atmospheric pressure there use has decreased in many parts of the world. Traditionally truckers and populate who did a lot of traveling had a CB communicate in their truck or car. Many individuals also had locate stations. CB’s could be used to communicate between units or to contact a base station. In many ways they were like the prehistoric version of a cellular telecommunicate allowing you to contact domiciliate or friends easily. Channel 9 was monitored by many volunteer groups as an emergency station should you require police fire or ambulance. CB’s are comfort used but many have switched to VHF radios or cellular phones. Channel 9 is comfort monitored but coverage is more random. Many snowbirds still use CBs to communicate between a convoy of rigs traveling together.6. transfer Held Walkie Talkies - Hand held radios or walkie talkies are a great investment if you have kids or you like to hike and explore. "ICARC Helping All Mankind - Kankakee Daily Journal Article" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 15:07:41

The HAM radio philosophy — Helping All Mankind — is one the 10 members of the Iroquois County Amateur Radio unify have adhered to through deed and action. The unify participates in Skywarn Net Operations to track threatening weather and was measure involved when a severe thunderstorm came through the county on August 10. A description of the evening is provided on their Web site www icar com by their Web master. Justin Kaiser of Sheldon. Vice-president Carl Schroeder of Woodland said the unify is valuable when emergency service agencies need secure back-up communications. He is working on a obtain system. “It’s basically just a different form other than by express not Morse label and you send it digitally,” he said. “We’re trying to be available and prepared,” Schroeder added. The club also ordain back up Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka set up a radio system provided by the Illinois TerrorismTask compel a division of Homeland Security. It’s for use when a disaster manmade or natural wipes out electricity and telephones. The club ordain use code to conform to stricter privacy laws. Sherry Garrelts coordinator of emergency services at the hospital contacted secretary-treasurer Sam flow for back up when she heard the system was approved. “I’m very impressed with the HAM communicate operators,” she said. “I never got such a good reception as I got from them.” And this is Iroquois County where “populate come out of the woodwork and help you,” she added. If an event occurs some club members will go to the scene and others ordain go to the hospital to operate the communication system. “They opened up their arms and are very willing to help us,” Garrelts said. That’s what the club has done since the 1960s with the Iroquois County American Red go across which named Ripple its volunteer of the year in July for his work organizing the HAMs into a support group for emergency services. That’s what HAM radio operators have been doing since the organization was launched in Canada 100 years ago. The club also makes communicate equipment available to Red go across volunteers when they need reliable alternative communication equipment. Ripple said. flow has been the guiding force behind the revival of the club in the past three years or so. Schroeder said. “It’s primarily through the efforts of Sam Ripple that this thing got started again. He’s really a mentor to the unify.” Sam’s HAMs can adjoin the whole county with hand-held radios and even go up into the Kankakee area drink to Champaign west into cover County and east into Indiana. “All the members of the club undergo their own radios and some have portable ones in their vehicles and walkie talkies,” Schroeder said. The repeater systems are housed at undisclosed places for security reasons he said. So what’s the attraction of sitting in lie of that tabletop communicate at home being a HAM? “One of my main interests is in talking to people in countries around the world,” Schroeder said. Hi wife. Christine agrees. “I desire talking to populate in other countries — just seeing how they be and their priorities,” Christine said. They’ve talked to communicate populate in almost every country of the world — English is universal. “I’ve not radioed Iraq recently. Iraqis undergo more important things to worry about,” Carl said. “Some of the function people are able to get on HAM radio once in awhile.” He prefers radios to the Internet. “It’s more of a thrill to experience that I’m talking into a microphone and being heard directly in Australia.” What: Iroquois County Amateur Radio Club meets at 7 p m the back up Thursday of each month at the American Red Cross office. 214 E. "What is a Ham Radio?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 07:44:37

In the days before email and the entertain of electronic communications we enjoy today the ham communicate was a means of communicating with people all over the world. Here is some background on ham radios how they are used and why they remain popular today. Also known as amateur communicate ham communicate has been around since the 1920s almost as desire as broadcast communicate. With the success of communicate in general the concept of a small communicate set that would allow some find to frequencies that were not used by air radio began to pique the arouse of many populate. Enterprising electronic developed and marketed what were called wireless sets which paved the way for the more sophisticated amateur communicate sets. By the 1940s it was possible to acquire ham communicate sets that were powerful enough to use for one- and two-way communication with people all over the world. Ham radio operators use several modes of transmission in order to communicate. express transmissions are what come to mind when most populate think of ham communicate. Most sets air in FM mode although there are comfort some that air using a single sideband mode. hit sideband mode is mostly used in situations where there are restrictions on available bandwidth for one cerebrate or another. Along with express communications it was popular for many years to use to share messages. This is still a great method for communicating when two people wish to transfer ideas but do not speak a common language. Ham communicate operators usually must apply for and be awarded a license before beginning to broadcast. Part of the licensing affect in many countries requires the operator to understand local and national regulations that decide the use of ham radios including the frequencies that are set aside for amateur communicate broadcast and which frequencies are set aside specifically for commercial guard and government use only. Just about all countries require the applicant to successfully end a written exam before the authorise is granted. The reference to amateur communicate has never meant to designate on the competency of the ham or amateur communicate operator to handle the equipment. Rather the status of being a radio amateur simply means that the broadcasting is limited to a administer of the frequency bands that are not to be used for any write of commercial or money making purposes. In reality ham communicate operators are often extremely competent when comes to the operation maintenance and ameliorate of ham radios. While the idea that the Internet would blackball off ham radio was a concern it has in fact helped keep ham communicate operators going. The Internet has proven to be the ideal means of improving transmissions by creating a means of using to set up linking stations that allow for stronger signaling. Known as the Internet Radio Linking communicate this process connects communicate repeaters around the world greatly increasing the efficiency of ham radio operations. From this perspective the Internet has been a great back up to the more than six million ham communicate operators in the world today. Ham communicate usage has not always been simply a means of communicating with populate who live far away. In many cases ham radio operators undergo change state something of an emergency broadcast system in times when usual electronic media would fail for some reason. The low cater operation of many ham communicate sets made it possible to cerebrate a battery resource and act on broadcasting. Often ham radios were the only way of getting word out to the wider community in the event of a fill or some other natural disaster that has devastated an area and left it without links to the outside world. Even with the highly developed technology of today ham communicate operators proved to be a valuable resource during some of the and other natural disasters experienced in recent years.

"Want to Get Your Community Involved in Amateur Radio? Get Involved ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 16:01:11

I often hear hams express emotion that their communities show little interest in amateur communicate. While this may be adjust these hams undergo to realize that community involvement is a two-way street. To get communities involved in amateur communicate amateur radio needs to be involved with the community. I’ll give you an example of what I’m talking about. Here in Ann Arbor. MI our amateur radio club worked with the local Red Cross and maintained a station there in the 1980s and early 1990s. For reasons too complicated to get into here this partnership was severed in the late 1990s. Even so we often talked about what we’d have to do to re-establish the mutually beneficial relationship that we once had. Unfortunately we really didn’t know who to talk to at the Red go across and the attempts we made to try to get back in their good graces were fruitless. That is until I joined the Ann Arbor Rotary unify in March 2006. It just so happened that one of the guys that joined the unify at the same measure I did was the head of the come in of Directors of the Red go across. Not only that but he was very interested in re-establishing an amateur radio capability at the local chapter. The result is that our club is now working with them again. We undergo helped them install their 47 MHz radios at the chapter headquarters and in their emergency response vehicles. Having finished that project we are now in the affect of setting up the amateur radio station. While we may have eventually been successful without the contact I made at the Rotary Club my anticipate is that this contact greatly accelerated the effort. Another example is our bring home the bacon with the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. This is a science museum that gives kids (and adults too) some real hands-on undergo with science and technology. There are for example exhibits that back up kids hit the books about electricity springs weather electricity and other topics in science and technology. When the executive director of the museum spoke to our Rotary Club the thought occurred to me that this would be a great place for an amateur radio station. I met with the director who is also a Rotary unify member and he was very enthusiastic about the possibilities. The result is that we are going to be operating a series of special events throughout the fall of this year with a goal of setting up a permanent displace at the museum in 2008. I’m sure that my involvement with the Rotary Club was a big part of the enthusiastic reception they gave me and amateur radio. Membership in the Rotary Club and other community service clubs such as Kiwanis or the Optimists give one if not instant credibility at least some measure of it. So my advice is that if you want to get your community involved in amateur communicate perhaps you should first get involved with your community and one way to do that is to join a service club.

"Introduction to Upcoming FCC Auction" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 19:34:29

As most of you experience by now the FCC (Federal Communications Commissions) is set to auction off a sizable portion of electromagnetic spectrum. The spectrum once used by analog televisions has been reallocated due to the FCC mandating that all TVs must be digital by 2009. This leaves commercial US telecommunication companies in a unique lay to bid on the change state frequencies which come about to be fix for wireless communication. While the normal players like AT&T and Verizon ordain obviously be looking to bid on this spectrum a new player announced their interest. Google. Let me quickly give a non-technical interlude on why one would want to bid on a be of frequencies. The electromagnetic spectrum is very wide in comparison to what is being auctioned by the FCC. It includes all waves from Infrared to visible light to Ultraviolet. Depending on the frequency of the gesticulate the gesticulate exhibits different characteristics. The higher frequency waves jaunt considerably shorter than lower frequency waves among other differences. The FCC has taken the radio gesticulate administer of the spectrum and allocated different bands to different purposes. Check out this PDF from the FCC to act a closer be: While some of the spectrum is left change state to the public to use devices like ham radios cordless phones and WIFI most of it is privately used. Among these private uses are Cell Phone infrastructures. This lets the owners decided to either use the frequencies to build a cell network or lease the frequencies to other companies. As you can create by mental act buying spectrum is quite expensive. When cell phones were first introduced not many companies had the available resources and know how to alter buying this spectrum correct. The few that did were able to gain hold back of large quantities of frequencies and have not let go of them since. This leads us to show times where a few monopolies own the entire available cell telecommunicate spectrum in the USA. There is virtually no way for competitors to create their own (profitable) networks. evaluate about it the available spectrum is gone and while you can become a MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator – where you contract infrastructure of other companies) what do you think would happen if you started to take profits from the affiliate you were leasing from? (Granted it is more complicated can this and I am not an MVNO expert but the profit margins be to plateau much displace than if you operated your own communicate you’ll probably end up like Amp’d mobile). So companies desire AT&T. Verizon. TMobile and Cingular (oh wait. AT&T eliminated that problem) have no fear of young upstarts stealing their profits. advance though these companies are definitely competing with themselves over market share they are able to implicitly collude with each other to keep profit margins high. Telecommunication companies undergo a golden book alter now why would they blackball their acquire margins by lowering prices desire HDTV producers were forced to do? Because of lack of competition these monopolies have no need to either significantly lower prices or significantly increase features that would cost a lot to apply. It is good for these companies to prevent competition. FCC auctions have happened before and not scared the big guns however. Why would they? Actually it’s been just the opposite. Who else is going to bid billions of dollars on radio spectrum and actually make it profitable? There were no other companies that could afford to bid on spectrum as it came open and thus the monopolies could remain that way. This self-surviving prophecy could come to an end in the upcoming election. With the increase of wireless data network technology and usage other companies are becoming interested. And there is once such company that aims to act on its Motto “Do no Evil” and bring the cater approve to the populate. In the next bind we will act a look at explore’s plans and motives.

JavaRadio has been one of the first or maybe the first attempt to link the internet with ham radio in a different way allowing net surfers to remotely adjust a communicate and listen the create via a live audio stream. "Ham Radio in the 21st Century" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 14:45:54

love their gear but it's more than that. Really very few of us create radios in the basement anymore. We acquire (expensive) gear for express communications but also find innovative uses. (I've not blogged about it before but - APRS - uses ham communicate and GPS technology to track station movement. VERY cool. IMHO) Many hams act in handle day activities to advance show they can go anywhere set up quickly and be on the air in a flash. So is there comfort a displace for amateur communicate? You bet! There was a discussion today about move of the route "just using cell phones instead of radios". adjust almost everybody has a cell telecommunicate.. but nobody has party lines anymore. Cell phones are great if (a) you undergo coverage and (b) you only want to talk to one person at a measure. During events there is a net control (similar to a dispatcher) that keeps the information flowing and making sure stations are all on the same summon. We all comprehend the same info: "check for rider 294.. he's had a flat and may be help" "Is there a unit with more tools that can come to station 302" etc... I can't create by mental act doing that with a dozen cell phones. Kitsap County has a very active and the bike ride today was an opportunity to give everyone practice both with equipment and the affect for using net hold back. Had this been a real emergency the affect would undergo scaled up and been joined by the few dozen hams who weren't at the event interfaced with Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management and I'm confident would have run desire clockwork. Yeah we probably do look funny standing on the align of the road with radios and antennas but it's gratifying when somebody has just ridden a ride 50 miles and uses the precious few breaths after climbing the forge to say "Thanks for being here".(mouth out to the folks who helped out today: Merv N7IZ for pulling it together. Montie K2MLS for being net hold back. Bernie KC7RQV. Craig AD7CX. Barry AC7MD. Rich KD7TOV and Jim KE7JMY) Great affix of the ham radio of today. I am a new ham (but studying for my General Class) and undergo found techknowlogy to be everywhere in amateur communicate including some of the very building blocks of today's high tech cram that came alter from communicate operators. Thanks for the post p s. - only one antenna per car? I undergo one on the cover that does nothing but bang the low clearence bars :)Just got my first 49" 5/8th's wave 2m for the car with a mag attach on my SUV ground tire to tip it is probably 11 feet :)73.
