"Practice for Ham Radio Exam" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-01 05:44:34

A few years ago. I was talking with a co-worker about amateur (or "ham") radio. I expressed an interest but knew I would have affect with Morse code. create by mental act my affect when I was told that no code was required for the Technician Class license! (NOTE: As of February 2007 the FCC has dropped the Morse label requirement for all license classes.) All that was required was to act and pass a multiple choice test on FCC rules and regulations related to amateur radio operations. My friend also pointed me at a Palm OS software package that would let me take practice exams based on the actual challenge share that was used for the real exam. I quickly realized that within a few weeks of taking practice exams noticing what questions I was missing and studying them. I was routinely getting 95% or better on the practice exams. Since only 75% are required to pass. I knew I was ready to go take the actual test. While there are several web sites where you can act practice exams. I found Eggs Ham to be invaluable as I could displace it with me and work on practice exams whenever I had a free moment. It also has the clever feature of allowing you to specify how certain you are about your answer correct on each question. After your practice test is graded you can check to see if you messed up on questions you thought you were sure about (those are probably the ones you really need to study). Eggs Ham is great software to help you practice for your Amateur Radio Operator's exam and it's FREE! If you've ever had an interest in amateur radio please analyse out Eggs Ham and contact a local radio club for more information about taking the exam. (If you're outside of the USA requirements for an Amateur communicate Operator's license will differ. Contact a local radio club for more information.)

"So you would like to be a ham operator?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-01 05:44:29

CB radio does not require licensing of any kind.  Back in the 70’s licenses were required but the FCC dropped that requirement and now if you have the money to buy one you can talk on a CB radio.  Since it is unregulated (that may be a little strong) or loosely regulated the rules are pretty informal and topics and language can be for mature audiences only sometimes. Many folks undergo gone to the FRS walkie talkies for mobile to mobile and for family outings at amusement parks and other travel venues just because of the language and topics heard on CB’s.  The FRS equipment does not allow much distance so CB radio can be useful if you need longer distances (up to several miles). Anyway ham radio requires licensing for all operators and ham equipment is regulated by the FCC and it is self regulated as well. The hobbiest might find this to be something he/she might enjoy doing as they become less mobile with time or situation. This may also be an interesting hobby for those who have a technical gene and desire tinkering with stuff just to figure out how it works. Many might denote the requirements of knowing and using Morse code to become a ham operator.  As of February 2007 there is no longer a requirement to know Morse code to get an amateur radio license. There is comfort an awful lot of Morse code being used but it is voluntary rather than mandatory. The FCC has 3 levels of amateur licensing.  They are titled. Technician. General and Amateur Extra. The Technician level is the entry level and is pretty restrictive (not much bind width) but lots of express and label opportunities. The next level is command and has very liberal frequency privileges.  Almost all of the frequencies are available and most modes (PSK16 and PSK 31. FAX. Slow ScanTV and several other digital modes) are also available. Finally there is Amateur Extra categorise which has all amateur radio privileges.  The tests become progressively more intensive. The Technician class is not too difficult and is intended to get folks on the radio and having fun.  The other two classes require testing that is more technical in nature and delves into the circuitry and making of antennas and logic components.  Fun cram. For most of us the information that is tested is not stuff we already knew.  So there are some real mental hurdles to beat. You often comprehend folks say. “I am not good at math.” Those kind of mental blocks can make getting your radio licenses very difficult.  Electronic circuitry and such are mark new to me and while I understand logic (ANDs. ORs and NAND’s etc) calculating RMS values and oscilloscopes and frequency analyzers were really new. There is also the test anxiety. I don’t know about you but I undergo not taken a test of any significance (except my drivers authorise test) since I left grad school. The thought of failing one of these was pretty debilitating! As I sat in the room awaiting testing this past pass the 25 or so populate waiting with me were practically buzzing with test anxiety. I enjoy using Gordon West’s Ham Radio books for each of the levels. He does a thorough job of reviewing and explaining the material.  The FCC testing is done in a somewhat unique method.  All of the questions that will be on the test are public information. They are maintained in a public challenge pool.  There are several sites on-line that provide learn tests and let you affirm your knowledge before you every go to take the test. I have found if I read through the all of the questions and answers and explanations once and highlight the change by reversal say then I can start taking tests on-line. I used and I desire to act about 10 repetitions. Make sure you are taking a different test each time. I didn’t worry too much about whether I passed or not. The focus is on learning not on passing.  Then I reread the entire book reviewing all of the questions and cerebrate only on the alter answers. Then I return to the on-line testing until I go every time.  Once I am passing every time. I find a place to test (here in Kansas City, Associated Radio has handouts in the their store with the various locations where testing occurs and the dates they are held each month) and alter my plan for that time. In the Kansas City area you can take test on all but the first Saturday of the month and there is even an evening testing session in Independence.  The test fee is $14. You can take the same authorise test as many times as you wish until you go but you undergo to pay $14 for each test.  However if you go the Technician test you can act the General and if you pass that you can take the Extra all for the single fee of $14.  But if you need to tell the same test then you must pay an additional $14 for each time you act that test. Keep in mind I indicated that I bring home the bacon on the tests until I PASSthe tests every measure. I know there are some write A’s out there that absolutely undergo to be ameliorate and not desire any questions.  You will see reviews on-line of folks who took their test months ago and still remember how many they got wrong!  This is obviously a stressful thing taking these tests.  But I recommend you focus on learning not passing.  After all this testing is to allow you to direct a radio and you want as much knowledge as possible so learn all you can and go the test so you can get on the air. But much desire high school there are several topics that may not ever be relevant to your radio experiences. So strive to pass the tests. Knowledge is always good but generating more stress to do perfect is counter productive. VE’s (the folks that administer these tests) indicate that your test results ordain be within 1 or 2  questions of the level you have had on your on-line tests. So if you have been regularly getting 85% you should expect somewhere between 83% - and 87% on your be test.  Which means you pass! So buy the schedule get on-line and get your license upgrade. It is less than one months worth of work and I believe you will be amazed at how quickly you are ready for your test.

"Re: Ham radio license" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 19:29:37

Tom in another thread on this I mentioned the ARRL site.. I sight the ARRL study guides to be the best. We can also do on-line tutoring and such if you desire and be the help. At some point you will need a zip code. Go to the ARRL place and find the "evaluate sites" page enter your zip code and it should tell you where and when you can sight tests.. Around 14-20 dollars later you will experience if you are or are not going to get a license. (This is to offset the cost of adminstrating the test) evaluate is multiple guess. Technician is 25 questions IIRC. Extra is 50 don't experience about General... I passed Extra on the 1st try. (passed Novice 40 years ago and Technician on the first try too) But then I'm good at taking tests. Some folks act 3 or 4 or 5 or more tries. say: the fee is for test admin. There is no charge for the authorise itself or for renewal 10 years later (At this time)The court said "You can not charge them more than the authorise is worth" and since the rules prohibit us from being paid (Save in special cases) only compensated for costs incurred. The authorise is worth... NOTHING so they rush.. NOTHING. I was cautioned when I was licensed to never chew over hand-me-down study guides as the safety information changes as do the tests themselves. Pick up a current book dated 2007 and chew over from that. I don't evaluate those are ever any more than $25 a penny in a bucket compared to what Universities charge for textbooks. If you're new to ham radio don't rule out learning CW mode (morse label) even though it's not a requirement any more. The cw bands are loaded with old timers and newcomers alike and especially during DX contests. Arrl and CQ WW DX contests both undergo weekends for CW besides the SSB weekends. The HF bands are loaded with thousands of amateurs all over the world who ordain always bring home the bacon CW. Deen. KC4ZD I accept Deen... My label (WA8YXM) can be a bear to get repeated approve to me on SSB right. I undergo heard a lot of versions of it. change surface from folks who experience me and have my delux QSL card (I undergo 3 different qsl cards. Old. Plain. Delux) From time to time I've been known to say "LET's TRY THIS" and hit the cwid button.. That gets them right every time Most public library undergo the chew over guides. Passed on guides are great so long as they are current. There is also a learn test online. I earned my novice back in 1964 it expired and I got a new one in about 1980. Been continuous ever since. I undergo been a inform examiner the past 10 years or so just not associated with a testing group since my act. Getting the license has never been easier same with getting on the air. 2 measure mobile in an RV is fun. 10 meter radio from Radio dwell is inexpensive and a pretty decent radio. Jolene bought me one for Christmas some years ago my first contact was at 60 mph on an interstate with a YL (young lady) in Bulgaria. For the no cell phone while driving displace mobile comms are just not for you! This is what a rest area can be used for. 1- get a study command - read the chapters then read thru the consume questions read the areas giving you issue.2- act the online sample tests. These are great they give you the appropriate number of questions from each assort and your advance when you finish. If you pass this you will pass on test day.3- Find a test center use the ARRL org site with zip label. Some test centers be an RSVP. Be sure to find out. 4- FB OM. GL *(Fine Businees Old Man. Good Luck. Morse was the first to use Text message like abbreviations. PS learn morse label. Fun to use it is the mode that can always get thru. Oh and free licenses. UNLESS you get a vanity call in which inspect it is something like 14 for 10 years. My license renewal just came in the mail. Is it normal for them to ask for your social security be on a renewal? Do your renewal on line much easier & quicker. If you do not already undergo a "FRN" ("FCC registration be" required to do online registration/renewal) from the FCC you can acquire that as come up online. Here is a couple of websites to speed things up for youhttps://fjallfoss fcc gov/coresWeb/publicHome do Use this one to enter for your "FRN"http://wireless fcc gov/uls/index htm?job=domiciliate Use this one to re-create your authorise Yes they now ask your SSN or TIN on the renewalYou should go to the online system apply for and get an FCC renewal id be. (I forget what they label it just now) then you can log in and do renewals online (They like on line to paper) you can also bear on for a GMRS license for those FRS/GMRS radios everybody likes (Get caught using oh say channel 19 on a FRS/GMRS w/o a GMRS license and you may sight yorself w/o a ham authorise as come up. Get "Caught" with a GMRS license (exploit is in the go home) and you may have to get smelling salts to revive the FCC field agent as he passes out in shock.. But you get to act your licenses)I do on-line renewals.. come up.. Next year. Last.
