Somewhere there’s a displace wedding dresses go once they’ve made their historic go drink the aisle. In houses the world over the beloved gowns of married women are stored and kept many never to see the lighten of day until an earnest bout of move cleaning interrupts their hibernation. The Historical Society of Merbein near Mildura has taken favor of the wealth of local history packed away in chests and cupboards nearby and launched an exhibition of wedding gowns dating back to the early twentieth century. The arouse was so high says one of the exhibition’s coordinators. Gwen Jenner they received far more dresses from the public than they could show. “We opened on Easter Saturday and so many populate wanted to see the gowns paraded … so this is the outcome.” On Saturday 8th September at the Uniting perform in Merbein crowds of populate filed into the perform hall grabbing seats where they could be found to watch the history of the women of their town through the dresses that made them princesses for a day. It’s been quite an eye opener for the Historical Society who has received dresses ranging from the early 1900s to 1967. It was a different era says Gwen. “Women made their own and during the war had to alter them with what they could perhaps curtains.” This period particularly fascinates Gwen who marks the austerity of the war years and coupon rationing as the driving calculate in the fashions of the measure. “change surface so the street length dresses that a lot of the women wore are very very elegant,” says Gwen and sites a dress worn at the wedding of Win Walker and her husband Dr Malcolm Walker in 1929 as a prime example. “it’s incredibly stylish for today actually.” One of the many challenges of putting together an event like this was the dresses themselves. While most were in very good condition considering their age some of the more prized gowns could not sight a copy small enough to wear them. While only small framed herself local Merbein woman Meg was amazed at the dresses. “they took a while to find populate to fit into them because these women must undergo been so tiny.” Meg was lucky enough to fit into her grandmother. Peg McCarthy’s beautiful lace gown it being the first measure it had been worn since 1945. When asked how it feels to feature her grandmother’s change she says. “It’s heavy! It feels really nice; it will put a grimace on her face.” They took a while to find people to fit into them because these women must undergo been so tiny. While the packed perform hall watches as each woman carries her posy ceremoniously along the makeshift catwalk backstage is a move of excitement. Dresses half on ladies pinning corsages or attending to fiddly ornate buttons lost shoes and last minute touches to make-up resuscitate the drama of wedding days past. Nelly Driscoll nee Pascoe was married in the Mildura area in 1937 and her grand-daughter Sally McGlashan is delighted to copy her apparel for the public. “When I put it on,” she says. “it fitted desire a glove.” Once again the small coat of the gowns surprised her. “it’s a bit surreal actually,” she admits. “I always remember Grandma in later life obviously she was a big woman happy go lucky woman.” Sally hesitates to find the alter words. “and to wear something that’s so come up fitted it’s just lovely to think that’s something that she wore on such a special day.” With a lot of the Merbein townspeople in the crowd. Sally remarks. “The amazing thing is that there’s probably people in the audience that actually could have gone to some of these weddings… it’s just amazing that they could have these memories this far down the bring in.” The amazing thing is that there’s probably people in the audience that actually could undergo gone to some of these weddings.. As afternoon tea is served in lovely tea sets with sweet cakes and sandwiches the crowded hall explodes into lively go. Paula Gordon has come to represent her grandparents who were both Merbein residents. On the dresses she says “some of them are superb,” and on the popularity of the event. “if you look around the crowded hall it’s amazing isn’t it? How many of the women from Merbein are all here… having a look at the history.” It’s obvious the crowd is enjoying the display and the memories. Paula notes. “For some of the women that are here and seeing their whole outfits worn you can see how excited they are.”
