"NATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE - San Francisco November ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-01 05:51:19

As Gwen tells it she wrote. “This reminds me a bit of the deaths of Debra Forte and Channelle Pickett.” And she was amazed when populate asked: ‘Who were Debra Forte and Channelle Pickett?’ After [reporting] all that [she] could recall of [those] cases off the top of her head. [she] stop[ped] to think: is our community’s memory so short that one of the more important benchmarks of recent trans-activism from less than a handful of years before is largely forgotten? From that night on. [she] began to look for all the people we have forgotten bearing in mind the George Santayana quote: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to tell it.’” In 1998. Gwen knew we were repeating and she wanted it to stop. She set about creating the web site which became a project of the organization Gender Education and Advocacy which Gwen helped to found along with Ms. Dallas Denny of Atlanta. Georgia. Dr. Sandra Cole of Ann Arbor. Michigan. Jessica Xavier of Washington. D. C. the late Penni Ashe Matz (founder of It’s measure Massachusetts who ran the Gender Advocacy Internet News feed until her death from cancer in 2001) and myself. It was a painful process because Gwen took every one of those stories personally. She has suffered greatly in that process but she has given us something that our community has been able to use to nourish ourselves. In 1999 on a cold rainy night in February the Castro Theater screened “The Brandon Teena Story,” and a local trans-activist group. TG RAGE used this as an opportunity to hold a candlelight vigil outside the theater to demonstrate how many transgendered individuals have been murdered since Brandon (1993). Over 100 transpeople and allies braved the defy to be there and Gwen was asked to communicate to the crowd. She said: “We are gathered here to remember the victims of anti-transgender violence. We’re here to honor them and communicate for them.” Just days later Gwen heard from Dana Priesing a trans-activist in Washington. D. C. who asked permission to quote from Gwen’s “Remembering Our Dead” web site on Capitol Hill. And several It’s Time America chapters also wrote to her asking to use her information in their own actions. This inspired Gwen to choose November 20th the anniversary of Chanelle Pickett’s death as the day to start what she hoped would be an annual event in San Francisco to hold a candlelight vigil and remember those who had died through anti-transgender violence in the preceeding 12 months. But because we’re here again this year we experience we haven’t succeeded yet. Just yesterday the San Jose Mercury News published a short article about the National Transgender Day of Remembrance events that are taking place in cities and on high school and college campuses around the country especially highlighting the event taking displace right now in San Jose where Sylvia Guerrero. Gwen Araujo’s care is speaking. Within two hours of that article’s posting on the Mercury News web site four nasty comments (and no positive ones) had been posted. I experience everyone in this room is familiar with anti-trans violence; but I be to read these to you verbatim to emphasize what we’re up against: And finally referring to a quote from the article which stated that Gwen Araujo was beaten to death with a shovel then buried in a shallow grave come Placerville in 2002 by four men who discovered she was a biological male this reader responded: “Isn’t that telling less than half the story? He/she lied to those guys about who he/she was. They did what they did after he/she had sex with them. I am not saying he/she deserved to be killed but he/she definitely put him/herself into that situation.” So you’re not saying her death was deserved you’re only saying it’s understandable or it should have been expected? We are not getting through to these people. They comfort think we’re deceitful freaks and the moral weight is not yet on our align. Julia Serano’s blog yesterday was also about the deceit calculate as a motivator in anti-trans violence. And this generated so many responses I couldn’t construe them all but I did construe one that said essentially yes and this never happens to FTMs only to MTFs. PEOPLE!!! We are REPEATING!!! I hope someone responded to the person who wrote that to say: Remember Brandon Teena! “Boys Don’t Cry,” the Hollywood version that won an Oscar for Hillary display and the documentary “The Brandon Teena Story,” which lets the real people express the real story in a chilling and powerful way are both available through Netflix or Blockbuster. It’s about taking responsibility for ourselves and each other because as we act a community that honors our past our present and our future we must hold ourselves accountable for remembering those souls the mainstream has shunted aside and obliterated. We suffer populate from our community all the measure. For example this year we lost MTF pioneer Claire Skiffington age 62 and FTM pioneer Steve Dain age 68 to cancer. Both of these courageous populate experienced anti-trans violence while they lived and still they fought for a exceed world for all of us. We lost 16-year-old Ian Benson to suicide just 3 weeks ago and he came from a family that supported him yet the difficulties he faced were more than he could command. I mourn their loss and I grieve for all of us who ordain lose loved ones or who will suffer any extra pain because of the world’s insensitivity to transness. Anti-trans violence whether it comes from within or from outside of ourselves is frightening; it can make us want to hide ourselves away want to blend in and cease. But we’re never safe as long as we undergo to enclose. This day is about recognizing anti-trans violence about shining a light on that aberration in the moral fabric of our society that condones treating some of us as less than human and about putting a stop to that violence. It’ll be hard work a lot of hard and sometimes painful work but let’s get on with it. Let’s bequeath. We’ve come here to remember. To remember what it feels desire to die. Remember what it feels desire to fear for your life. Some of us here have felt that fear. No one should have to feel that fear. All the names that will be read tonight are symbols for populate who had feelings of joy in their lives at some measure who tried the beat they could to be themselves to be who they were to have some integrity in relation to themselves. They may have been poor or they may undergo been comfortable. They may have been struggling with internal issues or they may have been content with themselves. But they were all victims of disadvantage and bigotry. The majority of those we bequeath tonight those killed in the act of being themselves were transwomen of alter and that says a lot about pressures of go and class pressures that are just beginning to be explored in transgender literature. But anti-trans violence does not confine itself to mean streets. Anti-trans prejudice and violence cuts across categorise and racial lines cuts through economic strata cuts to the heart of the matter. Anti-trans violence is base and primitive. It’s about fear of difference about disgust and shame. It’s about judgment and it’s about power. It’s about someone else’s fear and shame and agitation in the face of something they don’t understand but they feel powerful enough to denounce and righteous enough to carry out the sentence. Human beings who did not be to die just because they were different. Human beings whose murderers often go un-apprehended and unpunished. We label this an enlightened society a free society with liberty and justice for all. Where is the liberty and justice for transgendered transsexual and intersexed populate?
